Tutorial 2_Formalism of quantum mechanics

This tutorial sheet covers various problems related to the formalism of quantum mechanics, including the behavior of wavefunctions, eigenfunctions of operators, normalization of wavefunctions, and calculations of expectation values. It also addresses the energy of particles in potential fields and the probability of tunneling through barriers. The problems require applying quantum mechanical principles to analyze wavefunctions and their properties.

Tutorial sheet 2
Formalism of quantum mechanics

1. Is 𝜓 a well behaved wavefunction if

(a) 𝜓 = 𝐴 𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑥, (b) 𝜓 = 𝑁 𝑇𝑎𝑛𝑥, (c) 𝜓 = 𝐵 exp(𝑘𝑥),
(d) 𝜓 = 𝐴 exp(𝑖𝑘𝑥), (e) 𝜓 = 𝐴 𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑥 + 𝐵 exp(𝑖𝑘𝑥)?

2. Is 𝜓 = 𝐴 𝑆𝑖𝑛(𝑘 𝑥)𝑆𝑖𝑛(𝑘 𝑦)𝑆𝑖𝑛(𝑘 𝑧) an eigenfunction of Laplacian operator

∇ ≡ + + ? If yes find the eigenvalue of the operator.

3. A particle limited to the x axis has the wave function 𝜓=ax between x=0 and x=1;
𝜓=0 elsewhere. (i) Normalize the wave function, (ii) Find probability to find the
particle between x =0.45 and x=0.55, (iii) Find expectation value x of the particle’s
position.
4. Can you find (i) momentum, (ii) expectation value of momentum of particle using
momentum operator in problem 3?
5. The wave function for a quantum system is 𝜓 = 𝐴 exp(𝑖𝑘𝑥). Check whether it is
normalizable.

6. Find the normalization factor for the wave function 𝜓 = 𝐴 exp(−𝑎𝑥 ). Given:
∫ 𝑒 𝑑𝑥 = 𝜋/𝑎.

7. Wave function for a particle moving in potential 𝑉(𝑥) = 𝛼 𝑥 is

𝜓 = exp(− 𝑥 ), 𝛼 is a constant and m is mass of the particle. Find energy of

the particle.

8. For a quantum particle at ground state 𝜓(𝑥) = exp(−𝑎 𝑥 ), with energy eigen
value 𝑎 ℏ /𝑚. Find the potential in which the particle moves.
9. If a quantum particle of mass m and energy E encounters a barrier of width a and
height U (U > E) then find the probability that the particle is found in classically
forbidden region (the region at other side the barrier). Also show that the energy of
the particle tunneled is same as the incoming particles.
