RAJIV GANDHI UNIVERSITY OF KNOWLEDGE TECHNOLOGIES, BASAR

(A.Y. 2024-2025)
Civil Engineering
Subject Name: Surveying Max Marks: 15
Date: 27 /02/2025 Time: 45 Min
Exam: E2S2MT2(CE2202)

SECTION –A (5M)
Objective Part
Note:
i) This section consists of 5 bits and all 5 bits are compulsory.
1. The principle of surveying that ensures errors do not accumulate and affect the
final results is called:

A) Principle of Least Squares

B) Principle of Control Points
C) Principle of Working from Whole to Part
D) Principle of Accuracy

2. When measuring distances using a chain, what should be done to minimize errors due to
sagging?

A) Use a tape instead of a chain B) Keep the chain tight and straight
C) Reduce the number of observations D) Measure in a zigzag manner

3. The purpose of brass rings or tallies in a surveying chain is to:

A) Reduce weight B) Ensure flexibility
C) Indicate chain length at intervals D) Connect chain links

4. The bearing of line AB as shown below is represented in reduced bearing as:

A) N150o B) E60oS C) S30o D) S30oE

5. Consider the below statements with respect to compass surveying and identify the correct
answer

statement a: survive compass works on the principle of magnetism and uses magnetic needle.

statement b: the sum of included angles in a closed traverse set by a compass is always equal
to 3600.

A) statement b is correct and statement a is incorrect

B) both statements are correct
C) statement a is correct and statement b is incorrect
D) both statements are incorrect

SECTION –B (10M)
Descriptive Part:
Note:
i) This section carries 10 Marks.
ii) Two Questions need to be answered out of 3 questions asked, Each Question
carries 5 Marks.

1A) With the help of neat diagrams, explain two fundamental principles of surveying
(3M)

1B) The distance between two stations was measured with a 20 m chain and found to be 600
metres. The same was measured with a 30 m chain and found to be 596 metres. If the 20 m
chain was 5cm too short, what was the error in the 30 m chain?
(2M)

2A) Explain the any two errors in compass survey with appropriate reasons?
(2M)

2B) The fore bearings of line AB and BC are given. Calculate the included angle between
them. (3M)

(a) FB of AB = 108o 24′, FB of BC = 210o 18′

(b) FB of AB = 16o 36′, FB of BC = 323o 43′

(c) FB of AB = 196o 37′, FB of BC = 263o 19′

3A) Explain any two types of benchmarks in leveling?

(2M)
3B) A 30 m steel tape was used to measure a distance. The field temperature was 30°C, while
the standard temperature is 20°C. The tape was designed for a standard pull of 50 N, but a
pull of 80 N was applied in the field. The coefficient of thermal expansion for steel is 11 ×
10⁻⁶ per °C, and the cross-sectional area of the tape is 2 mm². The Young’s modulus of steel
is 2 × 10¹¹ N/m². Find the total correction.
