Experiment no.6

The document outlines the objective and procedure for preparing potash alum from potassium sulfate and aluminum sulfate through crystallization. It details the materials required, step-by-step instructions for the process, and precautions to ensure successful crystallization. The reaction results in the formation of potassium aluminum sulfate, which is collected as colorless octahedral crystals.

MATERIALS REQUIRED
250 ml beaker or conical flask, glass rod, tripod stand, funnel,
and distilled water.
burner, wire gauze, china dish, filter paper, K,SO4. Al,(SO4)3 di.
H,SO
PROCEDURE
1. Weigh 33 g (0.07 mol) Aluminium sulphate and dissolve it in 50 ml of lukewarm
water containing 1-2 ml of dilute sulphuric (maintained at nearly 30°-40°C) distilled
acid.
2. Now add 12 g (0.07 mol) of powdered
K,SO, to the above solution. Filter the solution so as to remove suspended impurities.
3. Heat the above solution in china dish, till the
crystallization point is reached.
4. Place the chiia dish, containing the concentrated solution over the mouth of a beaker full of cold water, and
After sometime, crystals will appear. keep it undisturbed.
5. After the crystallization is
complete, decant off the mother liquor carefully without disturbing the
with crystals. Wash the crystals
gently a little cold water to remove the mother liquor sticking to the
crystals.
6. Dry the crystals' by
pressing gently between the folds of the filter paper.
7. Weigh the dry crystals on a balance. Transfer the
dry crystals in a polythene bag and seal it.
PRECAUTIONS
1. Dilute H,SO, should be added while preparing saturated solution of Aluminium sulphate to prevent hydrolysis.
2. Do not disturb the solution during crystallization.
3. Use warm water for dissolving salts.
4. Cool the concentrated solutionslowly.
