What is its total length, in cm, when a force of 40 N is applied?
1. Find the spring constant k using Hooke's law: F=kx, where F is the force, k is the spring
constant, and x is the displacement. The displacement is 18-8=10cm=0.1m
2. k=F/x=30/0.1=300N/m
3. Find the displacement when a force of 40N is applied: x=F/k=40/300=0.13m=13cm
4. Find the total length of the spring: 8cm+13cm=21cm

a) Explain why we sometimes get a shock when we come across a carpet and touch a door
handle
As you walk across a carpet, your body builds up excess electrons, which are negatively charged
particles. When you then touch a doorknob, these electrons moving to the metal doorknob. This
transfer of charge from your body to the doorknob is what you feel as an electric shock.

b) A student combs his hair with a plastic comb. The comb becomes positively charged.
Explain how this happens?
The comb transfer electrons to the hair when a student combs his hair

Like charge – repel; unlike charge – attract – please remember this

angle of incidence i = 300

angle of refraction is r = ?
n= 1.50
n=sin i / sin r
1.50=sin 300/ sin r
r=sin-(sin 300) /1.50
