CELPIP Speaking Task 4: Making Predictions - Study Tutorial

Overview
In CELPIP Speaking Task 4, you are required to make predictions based on an image that
you previously described in Task 3. Instead of simply describing what is happening, your
goal is to predict what will happen next.

Key Details:
 You will be given the same image as in Part 3.
 You have 30 seconds to prepare.
 You must speak for 60 seconds while making predictions.

Note-Taking and Preparation

To maximize your preparation time effectively, follow these strategies:

Step 1: Generate Five Predictions

To ensure you can speak for the full 60 seconds, come up with at least five simple and
clear predictions. Avoid complex scenarios that may be difficult to express in English.

Step 2: Focus on Simple, Predictable Changes

Some easy-to-use predictions include:
 How the weather will change.
 Whether characters will continue or stop their current actions.

These general categories work well for any image and provide flexibility in your
response.

Step 3: Choose Predictions You Can Describe Comfortably

Select predictions for which you know the appropriate vocabulary and verbs. If you
struggle with a verb, your response may sound hesitant.

Step 4: Be Creative and Open-Ended

 The task allows for flexibility in storytelling, so feel free to be creative.
 Predictions do not need to be related to one another.
 They do not have to be the most obvious outcomes in the image.

Step 5: Indicate Probability

 Some predictions are more likely than others, so include expressions that show
certainty or uncertainty.

Example Predictions:
1. The blue boat will sink.
2. The men on the boat will jump into the water.
3. The people on the beach will help the men.
4. The man in the red trunks will build a large sandcastle.
5. The women on the beach will be impressed by the sandcastle.
Template for Structuring Your Response
Use the following template to organize your answer clearly:

1. Introduction
 "I'm now going to describe some of the things that will happen next."
2. Predictions (Use Signposting Words)
 First of all, I think...
 Another thing that'll happen is...
 Also...
 What's more...
 Finally...
3. Show That You Are Making a Prediction
 Use phrases like:
o "I suppose..."
o "I guess..."
o "I think..."
o "I reckon..."
4. Wrap-Up (If Time Allows)
 "These are just some of the things that I think will happen next."

Language Boosters
Use these expressions to improve your score:

1. Future Tenses
 Use will and going to (contracted as "gonna")
o "He'll jump into the water."
o "The boat is gonna sink."
2. Express Probability
 High certainty:
o "The boat is bound to sink."
o "The boat is sure to sink."
 Medium certainty:
o "Perhaps the boat will sink."
 Uncertainty:
o "The boat may/might/could sink."
 Adverbs to show likelihood:
o "The boat is probably/possibly/likely going to sink."
o "Maybe it'll sink."
3. Starting Predictions with Probability Expressions
 "It's very likely that..."
 "It's quite probable that..."
 "I predict that..."
Example Response Using the Template and Language Boosters:

In this picture, what do you think will most probably happen next?

I’m going to describe some of the things I think will happen next.

First of all, I think the blue boat will likely sink because of the jumping fish.

And the men on the boat are bound to jump into the water and swim to the beach.

What’s more, I suppose some of those strong guys will probably run to help them and get
them out of the water.

Another thing that’ll probably happen is the skinny man in the red trunk may start
building a large sand castle on the beach because he’s such a show-off.

Finally, it’s very likely that the women are gonna be impressed with the man’s sand castle
and will give him lots of attention.

These are some of the things I think will happen next.

Final Tips for Success

 Practice using the template to structure your response.
 Use a variety of probability expressions to demonstrate flexibility in language.
 Speak clearly and naturally, using contractions like "gonna" and "he'll."
 Time your response to ensure you speak for the full 60 seconds.
