Lesson 8.3 Intersection and Union of Events

A. The extracurricular activities in which the senior class at Kananga National High School
participate are shown in the Venn diagram below.

Extracurricular Activities participated by senior students

1. How many students are in the senior class? 345

2. How many students participate in athletics? 159
3. If a student is randomly chosen, what is the probability that the student participates in
227
athletics or drama?
345
4. If a student is randomly chosen, what is the probability that the student participates only
30 2
in drama and band? or
345 23

B. The Venn diagram below shows the probabilities of grade 10 students joining either soccer (S) or
basketball (B)

B S

0.4 0.3 0.2

0.1

Use the Venn diagram to find the probabilities

1. P(B) = 0.4 + 0.3 = 0.7
2. P(S) = 0.2 + 0.3 = 0.5
3. P(B∩S) = 0.3
4. P(B∪S) = 0.4 + 0.3 + 0.2 = 0.9
5. P(B’∩ S’) = 1 – P(B∪S) = 0.1
Note:
The complement of an event is the set of all outcomes that are NOT in the event. This means that if the
probability of an event, A, is P(A), then the probability that the event would not occur (also called the
complementary event) is 1 – P(A) denoted by P(A’). Thus,
P ( A’ ) = 1 – P ( A )

Exercises:
A. In a sample of 50 students, 18 are freshmen, 23 are sophomore, 2 are juniors and 7 are
seniors. Find the following probability
1. A student is freshmen
2. Student is freshmen or a sophomore
3. Student is neither a freshmen or a junior
4. A student is not a senior

B. In a college, 55 students in a class were enrolled in three subjects as follows:

32 enrolled in English
28 enrolled in Algebra
25 enrolled in Filipino
14 enrolled in English and Filipino
10 enrolled in English and Algebra
11 enrolled in Algebra and Filipino
5 enrolled in the three subjects
Make a Venn Diagram and answer the following questions:
1. How many students enrolled exactly in one subject?
2. How many students enrolled in Algebra and Filipino?
3. How many students enrolled in Algebra but not English?
4. How many students enrolled in Algebra, English or Filipino?
5. What is the probability of students enrolled in Algebra only?
6. If a student is randomly chosen, what is the probability that the students are enrolled
in English and Filipino?
7. What is the probability of students enrolled English but not Algebra?
8. What is the probability of students that are enrolled in the three subjects?
