FROM THE PASTORS DESK

Dear Parish Family, Peace and all good! Well, here we go. Weve already embarked upon our Lenten journey together, challenged by Jesus to deepen our relationship to God through the disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The Scriptural readings for the season take us in hand and guide us through the ministry, Passion and Death of the Lord and, ultimately, to his Resurrection. In general terms, during the first half of Lent, the overall purpose of the Scripture readings is to prepare candidates for Baptism and to help those who are already baptized to renew their commitment to the Lord. All of us are called to conversion; for some, it will be a major, life-changing experience. For most of us, though, it will be part of a slow, patient, and ongoing process of growing and getting closer to God. This weekends first reading (Genesis 2) offers the shockingly poignant story of Abrahams willingness to sacrifice his son to the Lord: "Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love. This signal incident clearly foreshadows the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus, Himself the Paschal Victim. The author of the Letter to the Romans (chapter 8) reminds us, however, that the ordeal of Abraham pales in comparison with the outpouring of sacrificial love by God Himself: He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all. The culminating meditation on Gods saving love for each and all of us is further revealed in the compelling account of the Transfiguration. Tradition tells us that Jesus, accompanied by His inner circle of apostles Peter, James, and Johnclimbs to the peak of Mount Taboran imposing outcropping in the midst of the plains and rolling hills of Galilee. Here, the disciples witness the encounter of Jesus who is accompanied by -and in conversation with-- Moses and Elijah. In a highly symbolic way, Moses represents the Law and the Commandments, while Elijah represents the Prophetic tradition of Judaism. Scholars tell us that all three of them are discussing the exodus of Jesus into Jerusalem, where his own PassoverHis arrest, death and Resurrection-- most certainly awaits Him. What would it be like for us to place ourselves in this scene alongside the apostles? To be suddenly presented with the compellingand absolutely overwhelming revelation of Jesus true inner nature, identity, and destiny. I for one find Peters outburst more understandable in this context. After all, wouldnt you want to lingerliterally, to pitch a tentand stay on once youd been given such a privileged mystical experience and insight?

2 | MISSION SAN LUIS REY PARISH, Oceanside, California March 4, 2012

I would venture to say that many, if not most, of us have experienced our own kind of mountain-top experiencean aha! moment of insight in our lives. The piercing beauty of nature. The joy of discovery, creation and fulfillment of work well done. The indescribable sensation of genuine surrender the realization that we are really and truly and completely loved for ourselves. Yet, as much as we need to savor the peak experiences of our lives, we cannot cling to them; we need to move on. After the ecstasy, comes the laundry. We need to get back to earth, back to the routine and messiness of everyday life. Still we cannot lose sight of the vision, the gift, and the dream. As Christians, we see the hand of God in all of this, especially from the vantage point of our Lenten journey. We live in anticipation of gifted moments and cherish them when they are granted to us. They give us insight and hope for our journey as we continue to trust in the promise and the path of Jesus. It is a path which leads through the Cross and on to the Resurrection. Lets continue to pray for ourselves and for each other along the way. God bless, Fr. Chuck

SOCIAL CONCERNS EASTER - FOOD BASKET PROGRAM

Believe it or not, its time once again to think of Easter, the celebration which is the basis for our beautiful faith! By sharing our love with those who are less fortunate we can help others in a tangible way while demonstrating our very real belief in the Resurrected Christ. We often plan our holiday dinners without stopping to realize what a true blessing it is especially in these difficult economic times - that we are able to provide for our families. Sadly, too many hard working people in our community are not able to do so. Often we take our good fortune as a given rather than consciously remembering that it is truly a gift from God. God gives to us so generously and in return He only asks that we love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Sharing what we have is the most sincere proof of our love of God shown through our love of others. With your help we will give out holiday food baskets again this Easter. Thanks to our special food providers we can put together a wonderful food box with a good holiday feast with all the trimmings plus a little extra for just $40.00 per family! Well even manage to have a marshmallow peep or two for the little ones. When you put your donation in the collection, please be sure it is clearly marked for an Easter Basket. We also will gladly accept donations of turkeys, hams and canned goods which we ask that you bring directly to the Social Concerns Department in the Loretto House during our normal business hours. We appreciate you checking the expiration dates on all donated cans and packages of food. If you have any questions, I can be reached at extension 108 or at 760-547-0708. Thank you for all you do to help us feed the poor during the holidays and throughout the year. God bless you all. Carmen Parra, Director of Social Concerns ST. PATRICKS DAY, March 17th falls on a Saturday this year. The 5:00 p.m. Mass will have an Irish flavor and there is Pot Luck afterwards in the Parish Dining Room. You are invited to bring an appetizer, entre or dessert to share drop it off at the Parish Dining Room before Mass and pick up your dish or platter after. And remember to wear something green in honor of St. Patrick. Would those who wish to help with set up and/or clean up, please call Diane and Jim Manning at 760724-3319. This Lenten Season We live such hectic, busy lives; there is often so little time to notice what is happening to us. Gathering together regularly with a few fellow parishioners in a Small Christian Community offers people a chance to slow down, to be a bit more reflective about life, to sift and sort the things that count. Over time the Small Christian Community becomes a place where members ask: How might God be acting in this crazy mixed-up life Im living, even if I dont pay much attention to Gods presence on a day to day basis? The Mission San Luis Rey Core Team invites you to consider joining an SCC. All cultures are welcomed to join or start a group (8 to 12 people). Find out more from Eileen Costa (SCC Coordinator), at (760) 231-9930; or Bartolo Mendez at (760) 945-3701; or Tavale Tavale at (760) 295-4088. THE CATECHETICAL MINUTE ROMAN MISSALThe Nicene Creed Part 2

The new translation recovers Christs ancient title, Only Begotten Son (Fili Unigenite) which is also in the Gloria. To say the Son is born of the Father before all ages is a profound theological truth, for the Son is not born in the human sense of beginning ones life, but eternally proceeds from the Father while being always fully God. Another and very notable change in the language of the Nicene Creed is the use of the word consubstantial in place of the phrase one in being. The Latin word consubstantialis is difficult to translate because it is so unique. But it describes a unique reality: the relationship between the Father and the Son. Consubstantial is not a word we use in normal conversation. However the Fathers at the Council of Nicaea worked hard and long over this word in 325, so the closer the vernacular is to the original the more faithful it will be to a clarified/clear Christian belief. The term one in being was adapted by the Anglican Church in the translation of the Creed by Thomas Cranmer at the time the Church of England separated from the Roman Catholic Church. Following the Second Vatican Council as part of collaborative ecumenical efforts to come to an agreement on some texts to be used in their liturgical celebrations, this translation one in being was accepted by some Christian churches including our own for use in the Nicene Creed. However as the accuracy of translations was examined for this new translation it was decided that the Roman Church would adopt the direct translation of consubstantialem Patrem, e.i. consubstantial with the Father. The reason for this is that from the standpoint of theology, one in being does not accurately reflect the full meaning of consubstantialem i.e. that Christ is one nature, not simply one in being with the Father. He is not of a lesser substance: He has always existed. St. Anhanasius summed it up there was a time he never was not. One advantage of the word consubstantial is that it reminds us that there is something about the inner life of God that is beyond our normal terminology. Next week: The Nicene Creed Part 3 was Incarnate.

Del Escritorio del Prroco

Querida Familia Parroquial,
Paz y todo bien! Bueno, aqu vamos!
