I. CURRICULUM CONTENT, STANDARDS, AND LESSON COMPETENCIES

A. Content Standards The learners demonstrate understanding of the development of atomic

models that led to the description of the behavior of electrons within
atoms.

B. Performance Standards

C. Learning Competencies Explain how the Quantum Mechanical Model of the atom describes the
energies and positions of the electrons.

D. Learning Objectives At the end of the session, learners will be able to:
1. describe how electrons are distributed using the Quantum Mechanical
Model of the atom integrating interconnectedness of events and clarity
of a process through a graphic organizer; and
2. show through a role play depicting peace and unity in diversity among
people as a concrete translation of the development of the Quantum
Mechanical Model of the atom.

II. CONTENT

Subject Matter Quantum Mechanical Model of an Atom

Area for Integration Reading and Peace Education

Theme Relational Awareness

Key Concept for Integration The development of the Quantum Mechanical Model of the atom is the
result of the brilliant ideas of the three physicists coming from different
countries. Despite their differences in culture, they were able to agree with
something that led to the development of the atomic model which is
thought to be a better model to understand the positions of the electrons.

Question
Direction: Answer the question.
1. Does anyone of you know what items were matched in the worksheet?
The items that we matched were the atomic models.

For Enhancement and Consolidation Class

ACTIVITY: GIVE TWO!
Directions: Give the two meanings of the following words.
1. Uncertainty
2. Cloud
Lesson Language Practice 3. orbitals
Possible answers:
Uncertainty
General meaning: A state of being unsure or having doubt about
something.
Scientific meaning: In physics or quantum mechanics, it refers to the
"uncertainty principle," where the exact position and momentum of
particles cannot be precisely known at the same time.

Cloud
General meaning: A visible mass of condensed water vapor floating in the
atmosphere, typically above the ground.
Technological meaning: In computing, "cloud" refers to internet-based
storage and computing services, where data is stored remotely rather
than on local devices.

Orbitals
Chemistry meaning: A region in an atom where there is a high probability
of finding electrons, defined by quantum numbers.
Astronomy meaning: Refers to the paths that celestial bodies (like planets
or moons) follow as they revolve around other objects in space (such as
stars or planets).

For Intervention Class

ACTIVITY: SPELLING BEE
Direction: Spell the following word in your notebook.
1. Uncertainty
2. Cloud
3. orbitals
4. electrons
5. neutrons

During/Lesson Proper
Read the text about quantum mechanical model.

The Quantum Mechanical Model of an Atom

The Quantum Mechanical Model of an atom replaced afterward the Bohr

model since the latter cannot explain how many electrons can be found in
Reading the Key Idea/Stem an orbit. In the quantum mechanical model, electrons can be found by
probability in an orbital, a region of space outside the nucleus where there
is a high chance of finding an electron. Bohr’s model of the atom was
initially adopted by some physicists, however, later on, they concluded that
a completely better model was needed.

Three physicists namely, Louis de Broglie, Erwin Schrödinger, and Werner

Heisenberg (a German theoretical physicist) led the development of this
model. In 1924, French physicist Louis de Broglie proposed that the
electron particles could also have wavelike properties, unlike Bohr’s model
which treated electrons as particles in precisely defined orbits. Using this
idea, Australian physicist Erwin Schrödinger, in 1926, suggested the idea
that the behavior of electrons within atoms can be explained by treating
them mathematically as matter waves or the wave mechanics or quantum
mechanics, thus the birth of the quantum mechanical model of the atom.

On the other hand, according to the Uncertainty Principle of Heisenberg, in

1941, for a particle like an electron, precise location and momentum cannot
be exactly known. In the quantum mechanical model of the atom, the
location of electrons is referred to as the electron cloud. The regions with
the darker shade have a higher probability of finding an electron compared
to the lighter region.

GUIDE QUESTION:
Directions: Answer the question.
1. What is the text all about?
Possible learner’s response:
The text is all about the development of the Quantum Mechanical
Model of the atom and how it is a better model compared to Bohr’s
model.
2. Why do you think it is important to develop respect and cooperation
despite diverse cultural backgrounds?
Possible learner’s response:

backgrounds is important since different perspectives can lead to
more creative problem-solving endeavors, besides promoting
peaceful co-existence.

LEARNING ACTIVITY: COMPLETE ME

Directions: Complete the graphic organizer by connecting the events on
the development of the Quantum Mechanical Model of the atom. Choose
your answers inside the box below.
To enhance your comprehension of our lesson today, let us answer these
few more questions.
ACTIVITY: THINK-PAIR-SHARE
Directions: Answer the given question and choose a partner.
Deepening Understanding of the
Key Idea/Stem 1. How did the ideas of de Broglie, Schrödinger, and Heisenberg lead to
the development of the Quantum Mechanical Model of the atom?

Possible learner’s response:

The ideas of de Broglie, Schrödinger, and Heisenberg led to the
development of the Quantum Mechanical Model of the atom since they
believe that there is only a probability that electrons can be found in a
region of space around the nucleus.

2. The development of the Quantum Mechanical Model of the atom

shows us that indifferences in the cultures of the physicists who
contributed are not a hindrance to reaching a common goal, a better
atomic model. Why do you think it is important to develop respect and
cooperation despite diverse cultural backgrounds?

Possible learner’s response:

Developing respect and cooperation despite diverse cultural backgrounds
is important since different perspectives can lead to more creative
problem-solving endeavors, besides promoting peaceful co-existence.
