UNIT 1- OPINION ESSAY

For most people my age, living without smartphones is almost

impossible. You hardly find a person who does not have one! While
some argue that smartphones have become an essential part in our
life, others believe that it has impacted the users’ wellbeing negatively.
To better understand this issue, I believe it is important to explore both
views in depth.

To start with, smartphones are important because we use them to

communicate with our family and friends. We can easily get to the
person in a blink of an eye! We also use smartphones to search for
information. What is more, I can use my smartphone when I feel alone
and bored. There are hundreds of free games and applications which
are available all the time.

However, there are other people who think that smartphones have their
dark side! Using smartphones for long hours can cause health
problems such as backache. Young users can access inappropriate
contents and that can have negative results. What is more, buying new
smartphones and the internet data can be too expensive.

In conclusion, although smartphones have many negative aspects, I

think we cannot live without smartphones. Most people use them every
day and they have made our life easier.

UNIT 2- A STORY ABOUT A CULTURAL MISUNDERSTANDING

A. (Who had the misunderstanding? / Where it happened / when it

happened

I had an unforgettable experience during my trip to a small and old village in

India. One day, I decided to try out a local cafe for lunch. As I sat down at a table,
a friendly young waitress approached me to take my order. The only problem
was that I didn’t speak any Indian, and they didn’t speak English.

B. Events/ Feelings/ Reactions

I pointed at a nice-looking picture of a traditional Indian dish that was on the

menu hoping to enjoy a tasty one. To my surprise, the server asked if I wanted
it to be spicy. She shook her head from side to side. I thought it meant “no”

Just as I was about to receive my order, it suddenly clicked in my mind. I

remembered that in India, they use a different body language signal. Shaking
the head from side to side meant “yes”. I burst into laughter at my own
misunderstanding.

C. Ending / Lesson Learnt

Apologizing to the server, I ordered another dish. It was a valuable lesson for
me. It is highly important to understand body language, especially in foreign
places.

1 starring Jim Carry and Cameron Diaz. The film was released 1994. I
saw it on Netflix last night with my two brothers.

hero when he wears a mysterious mask.

The film gave me a valuable lesson and that is ordinary do not need to

One of the best things about The Mask is the visual effects. they are
4 just amazing. The makeup is outstanding and the costumes are
fantastic.

I was totally glued to my seat till the last minute. If you like comedy
