EXPERIMENT NO: 5
DATE:-
AIM: Design and optimize a 2 GHz dipole antenna in CST, analyzing performance parameters
like S-parameter, radiation pattern.

APPARATUS: CST Studio Student Version software

DIAGRAM:

PROCEDURE:

1. Calculate the Length of the Dipole Antenna

The most common formula for the resonant length of a half-wave dipole antenna is:

𝜆 𝑐
L= = 2 2𝑓

where:

• L is the total length of the dipole antenna (mm),

• c is the speed of light (3×108 m/s),
• f is the frequency (2 GHz).

2. Create a New Project in CST Studio

• Open CST Studio Suite and create a new project.

• Select "Microwave & RF" template and choose the "Antenna" design option.

3. Define the Geometry of the Dipole Antenna

• Create the Dipole Arms: In the "3D Modeler," select "Cylinder" and draw a thin wire with
a length of 𝜆/2 mm (for the full dipole) and a small radius (0.35 mm).

4. Set Up Material Properties

• Assign the material properties for the dipole wire. For a typical dipole, use Copper as the
material.
• Assign air or vacuum as the material for the surrounding environment.

5. Define the Frequency Range

• Set the frequency range of the simulation, ensuring the range includes the f GHz resonance.

6. Run the Simulation

7. Analyze the Results

• Return Loss (S-parameters): Check the S-parameter plot for the dipole antenna’s
resonance. The return loss should ideally be below -10 dB at f GHz, indicating efficient
matching.
• Radiation Pattern: View the 3D and 2D radiation patterns to ensure the antenna is
radiating efficiently at the desired frequency.
