FORMS OF EVALUATION Bb

The document outlines two forms of curriculum evaluation: formative and summative. Formative evaluation is an ongoing process aimed at improving student learning through continuous feedback, while summative evaluation occurs at the end of a program to assess overall effectiveness. Both evaluations serve to identify areas for improvement, provide feedback, measure effectiveness, ensure accountability, and enhance decision-making.

FORMS OF CURRICULUM EVALUATION

Formative evaluation:Formative evaluation is an ongoing process that involves collecting feedback and
data during the development of a program.

-It involves ongoing assessments to inform instruction and improve student learning.

Examples of formative evaluation methods:

-Quizzes,classwork assessments,class discussions and debates

-Observations of learner behaviour and engagement

- Writing assignments, performance tasks and project- based assessments

-Unit tests,mid- term tests and mid- year tests.

NB: Formative evaluation helps teachers:

- Monitor learner progress

-Identify areas of improvement

-Adjust instruction and curriculum

-Enhance student engagement and feedback.

Formative evaluation involves collecting qualitative data through methods such as interviews and
observations

Formative evaluation centres on work going on.

Purposes of formative evaluation

a)The purpose of formative evaluation is to identify areas for improvement and make changes as
needed to ensure that the final product or service meets the intended goals and objectives.

b)Formative evaluation is conducted during the early stages of development and is often used to guide
decision- making and improve the quality of the final product .

c)Its purpose is to supply curriculum planners with information that is likely to improve the program in
its experimental stage.(AGatawa 1977).

d)It is an analytical process which extracts evidence of success or failure and suggests solutions.

e)It encourages adoption of programs that are likely to be successful and it eliminates doubtful projects
from reaching schools.
f)Formative evaluation is conducted during the research and development stages for the purpose of
providing data that can be used to form a better finished product.

CHALLENGES OF FORMATIVE EVALUATION

a)Time-consuming:It can be time consuming as it requires collecting and analyzing data throughout the
development process

d)Limited resources:Conducting formative evaluation may require additional resources such as

staff,time or funding.

c)Subjectivity:Formative evaluation is always based on subjective feedback and may be influenced by

individual perspectives or biases.

SUMMATIVE EVALUATION:It is a type of evaluation that occurs at the end of a learning period or
program. It assesses students' learning and whether they have not met established learning goals.

-Summative evaluation involves comprehensive assessment to measure student learning at the end of a
lesson,unit or academic year.

Examples of Summative evaluations that teachers can administer:

Unit tests,midterm tests,end-of-term tests,end- of-year tests and standardized tests.

These Summative evaluation methods help teachers:

-Measure student mastery of learning objectives

-Evaluate curriculum effectiveness.

- Determine student readiness for advancement.

-Identify areas for curriculum revision.

- Provide feedback to students and stakeholders.

a)Summative evaluation is conducted at the end of a program, product or service to determine its

effectiveness and success in achieving its goals and objectives.

b)It is usually conducted using predetermined criteria and involves collecting data through
surveys, tests, etc to measure the outcomes of the program.

c)It provides feedback on the overall effectiveness of the program to inform decisions about its future.

CHALLENGES OF SUMMATIVE EVALUATION

a)Timing:The timing of summative evaluation can be challenging as it may not provide immediate
feedback that can be used to make adjustments during the program.
b)Cost:It can be costly ,particularly if it involves administering standardized tests or other assessments.

SUMMARY:IMPORTANCE OF FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE EVALUATION

a)Identifying areas of improvement

eg Formative evaluation allows program developers to identify areas for improvement during the
development process.

b)Providing feedback:Both formative and summative evaluation provide feedback that can be used to
improve the program.

c)Measure effectiveness:

eg Summative evaluation measures the effectiveness of the program in achieving its intended goals and
objectives. This information can be used to determine wherther the program is successful and to inform
decisions about its future.

d)Ensuaring accountability:

Evaluation helps to ensure accountability by providing evidence of program outcomes. This information

can be used to demonstrate program effectiveness to Stakeholders' and funders.

e)Improve decision- making

Evaluation provides data-driven information that can be used to inform decision-making.This

information helps to ensure that decisions are based on reliable and valid information rather than
assumptions or opinions.
