Why Should Schools Ban Cell Phones?

The article, Why Should Schools Ban Cell Phones? by Jeremy Engle illustrates the
issue of students bringing smartphones to school. The writer is optimistic that
restricting cell phones in school is important because students will improve
participation in class. This evaluative commentary will examine whether schools
should ban students from bringing cell phones.

Firstly, Engle strongly believes that prohibiting smartphone use in classrooms will
help decrease distractions. It is because students are not going to have the
opportunity to use social media in the classroom. For example, during lunch, all the
students preferred to talk to each other instead of using their phones while some
were playing sport such as basketball.

Secondly, students can interact well with other people. This is because as the
teacher gives a greeting, students exchange glances and react accordingly. For
example, it can be seen when all the students became more focused in class. There
is also evidence when Nikita McCaskill, a government teacher at Timber Creek
states that students are interacting and working together more in the classroom.

Finally, the number of phone-related bullying occurrences at schools has decreased.

For example, students may not be able to send harmful texts to others. From that,
the author also gives clear evidence that more than a hundred student phones were
taken away in September resulting in confiscations rapidly decreasing, and incidents
using phones in schools, such as bullying, also decreased.

In addition to the clear evidence, the writer also gives his counterarguments. The
evident when he remarks that the students look more like imprisoned people. For
example, he pointed out that students need to go to the front office and get
permission to use the phone to call their parents. However, as previously said, he
counters that to decrease distractions, cell phones should be banned.
We agree with the author's opinion because restricting cell phones in schools is
essential and benefits all teachers as well as students. Furthermore, the students
can enhance their academic achievement because students will be able to focus fully
in class. In our opinion, restricting cell phones in schools may reduce the amount of
students’ screen time on cell phones that they spend for too long at home and even
in the classroom. Lastly, we also believe that restricting cell phones can cut down on
cyberbullying as it can stop students from harassing other people with texts by using
cell phones.

In conclusion, the author gives good reasons for his support of why schools should
ban cell phones. We reaffirm that using cell phones in schools should be banned.
Furthermore, restricting cell phone is beneficial not only for students but teachers
and parents too. This issue should be looked into further because our world will
advance in technology in the future which is very important in the world.
