Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative-descriptive study is to explore the various

outcomes on how friendship can influence or affect the academic performance of
an Angelite civil engineer student. The researchers used a purposive and
convenience selection approach to determine the study's participants. Through
an online video interview, the researchers gathered and analyzed personal
opinions and thoughts on the importance of friendship of four (4) Angelite college
students enrolled in the civil engineering program. According to the data that the
researchers examined, friendships have a big influence on how well civil
engineering angelites perform academically. Supportiveness and encouragement
can significantly boost academic performance and encourage angelites to be
more willing to learn, study, and perform better. Friendship can also decrease
stress via making plans and having fun with friends, which helps them avoid
overworking or exhaustion while also improving focus for better study
concentration. Furthermore, having friends in college is important and can be
extremely beneficial. It also has a significant impact and can lead to an increase
in the academic performance of an Angelite civil engineer. College students can
use this research to gain a better understanding of the value of friendship and
how it influences academic performance.

KAPIT BISIG: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF FRIENDSHIP IN… 1

Chapter 1

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

During the period of college, this is when students face many obstacles
and hardships in life, especially academically. Throughout these times, college
students meet and interact with many people. They connect with their
co-students which can form a special bond. This special bond that has been
formed enables them to rely on each other during difficult times.

In the Philippines, the people use the term Kapit Bisig to indicate a great
feeling of being together. Chico (2012) defined in his study that Kapit Bisig is “
helping others in times of need.” For instance, this term can be applied to a
group of friends. Within a friend group, each friend would help each other out
when one is facing problems or is struggling. In the same way, in her study,
Cuizon (2021) stated that Kapit Bisig represents collaboration between
individuals working toward a shared objective. It indicates that individuals who
share the feeling of Kapit Bisig with each other aim to not leave each other
behind throughout the process and for them to achieve their goals together. This
may be used to describe a group of friends in college that support one another in
reaching their objectives, graduating together, and not letting anybody fall behind.

Friendship is a mutual connection within a group of peers. As stated by

Leibowitz (2018) friendship is a relationship wherein two people must recognize
each other as being in coordination and having a connection that they see each
other as friends for the bond to exist. Before a person knows that they are friends
with another person, there is an understanding and the feeling of harmony
among them that they can be companions which will soon form a sort of bond

DON BOSCO ACADEMY - BACOLOR

KAPIT BISIG: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF FRIENDSHIP IN… 2

between the two. In addition, Gompers et al. (2012) claimed that people are
considered friends if they are more likely to collaborate with those who share
similar characteristics with them. These similarities can be divided into two
classes. Characteristics related to ability where both individuals get into a top
university, and characteristics related to affinity where both individuals have the
same background and interests. Similar characteristics and interests will make
people collaborate better and have deep mutual care and understanding.

Furthermore, friendship is a bond between two or more people where

each person within that circle cherishes and communicates their appreciation to
the others involved and can successfully let it be known to all. Each friend values
others, and how other people and their companions see their significant
influences in their perception of themselves and their self-esteem. The study of
Dworkin (2000), as quoted by Leibowitz (2018), claimed that one feels valued by
being appreciated by those who are dear to them.

In addition, Aristotle, as quoted by Schwartz (2007), added that friendship

should have the same amount of power and status as shared activities, feelings,
and choices. Friend A and friend B should have mutual interests, especially when
it comes to humor, for them to be comfortable with each other and deepen their
bond.

A person who has friends benefits in many ways, such as having

someone around who helps with tasks, which results in efficiency and faster
progression. Having friends enables collaboration, which is convenient for every
situation. According to the study of Smith (1997), as quoted by Gompers et al.
(2005), “the division of labor, which such collaborations entail, drives economic
progress and great productivity.”

In addition, Hruschka (2010) says that even if a person has many

connections with others, having fewer connections still proves that the
relationships they have are beneficial. It emphasizes the importance of friendship

DON BOSCO ACADEMY - BACOLOR

KAPIT BISIG: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF FRIENDSHIP IN… 3

for human happiness and well-being. Either in minimal ways, such as making
someone feel better, striking up a conversation, or offering assistance with an
ongoing task, The influence of friends greatly shapes a person's mood and
character. Being rewarded with such feelings by small actions from friends gives
motivation and helps deepen the relationship.

Equally important, friends constantly support one another, especially in

times of hardship or when a close friend desperately needs assistance. It is
natural for someone to help friends who are in need if they are experiencing
problems themselves. In Hruschka's (2010) study, he stated that “help that is
provided by friends is regulated by a system based on mutual goodwill. With this
goodwill, it motivates them to help each other more in times of need”.

Furthermore, according to Dechant (2011), the influence of friendship does

not only have to do something with social functioning but rather, it also influences
the cognitive development and academic achievement of one. As friends spend
time with one another, the development of their attitude is influenced by their
fellow members. Because of this, the potential of one to achieve academically
could increase with the joint of their bonds.

A research study by Amichai‐Hamburger et al. (2012) declared that

understanding the multiple dimensions of friendship is critical to comprehend its
effects. Many aspects of friendship have been identified, and many dimensions
of friendship need to be analyzed and investigated so that we can learn and
understand the differences or similarities between the various aspects of
friendship, as well as the different influences of these aspects.

College plays a significant role in the lives of individuals, as it is an

essential part of a student's life. Its impact is important for a student’s life stability,
satisfaction, and subjective well-being. Grzeskowiak (2005) described being in
college as part of a person's life, wherein it mostly shapes his or her story in life.

DON BOSCO ACADEMY - BACOLOR

KAPIT BISIG: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF FRIENDSHIP IN… 4

This phase, regarded as the pinnacle of the student's life, is when the majority of
the excitement, challenges, and struggles occur.

In addition, Alcuizar (2016) states that students' excellence in academic

performance is essential as it serves as a tool for them to have a successful
future as adults. Quality education can serve as a key to acquiring better jobs
and stable incomes. Better performance in education can lead to better
opportunities in the future as adults and improve career choices. In the same
study, Alcuizar (2016) also states that one’s academic achievement depends on
which environment the student is exposed to. Being part of a friendship in which
academics do not come to serious matters would leave their comrades
unfocused on their academics. The concept of studying turns into a burden for
those who are facing extreme problems.

Moreover, as stated by Alcuizar (2021) in a different study, psychological

factors that affect academic success include help-seeking, self-esteem,
academic overload, perceived stress, self-efficacy, and social support. Certain
factors that have an impact on a person's mental well-being also affect the
overall academic performance of students. Being exposed to these factors would
exhaust the students due to the pressure they face and feel.

Friends' knowledge and academic skills can be valuable resources that

can positively influence adolescents in their academics (Riegle-Crumb et al.,
2006). Students are willing to receive advice from their friends, as well as
information from study tips to academic strategies. Peers can play an important
role in studies as they can enhance students’ academic performance by
encouraging them to perform well. Friends can provide emotional support and
encouragement, crucial to maintaining a positive attitude when overcoming
academic challenges. In the same way, Astin (1993), as quoted by McCabe
(2023), described in his study that friend groups hold an unparalleled influence
on the growth and development of students. Having friends plays a vital role in
the lives of students. Most especially college students, as they are the biggest

DON BOSCO ACADEMY - BACOLOR

KAPIT BISIG: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF FRIENDSHIP IN… 5

source of influence for those students, with influences such as motivation,

inspiration, and self-esteem. Having friends around the individual who are willing
to support improves one’s academic performance and development significantly,
as it can also improve mental well-being and give an improved social life and a
more enjoyable experience on campus.

According to Schnall et al. (2008), as quoted by McCabe (2023), friends

can support one another as emotional support where the expression of hardship
and stress could be mitigated. Having friends around guarantees an enjoyable
time, as they can sustain entertainment. It is truly beneficial to have a friend who
will listen to difficulties since it allows the individual to let go of most of their bad
feelings, including tension.

Similarly, Nelson & DeBacker (2008) as quoted by Jacobson et al. (2012)

say that having a close friend who is supportive of their comrade’s academic
success helps to keep motivated. If one has a competent friend who approaches
academics with seriousness, that person could be encouraged to do the same
and take academics seriously. Likewise, learning comes through imitation or
modeling after the people an individual is close with (Santrok, 2008). Since they
are the main sources of inspiration or influence in life, learning from the people
who support or are close to them greatly enhances performance.

Furthermore, having friends around as a student could support one

another in academics in ways such as studying together and other forms of
indirect academic engagement. McCabe (2023) stated if a student is together
with their friends, they could help each other out by having an academic-related
conversation that could be useful for them. Another example of this is just by
simply studying together as it improves a person’s academic encouragement due
to the academic environment that is occurring.

In the statement of Alotaibi et al. (2023), such connections and friendships

often result in interactive learning, exchanging of ideas in academics, improving
the ability to understand, improves memory of course materials which leads to

DON BOSCO ACADEMY - BACOLOR

KAPIT BISIG: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF FRIENDSHIP IN… 6

improvement in one’s GPAs. When a person is with friends, there is always

interaction which enables the transaction of each one’s ideas on knowledge on
their academic course. Because of this, the topic goes deeper then one takes
note of the important terms as well as something that is newly discovered from
their academic discourse which they would bear in mind.

On the other hand, in the same study, Alotaibi et al. (2023) claimed that
having excessive social distractions distracts the student from focusing on
academics, which results in low GPA outcomes. Because of this effect on one's
GPA from excessive social distractions, spending time on socialization shall be
limited for the student to balance time on both social life and academics.

In addition to this, to achieve a certain goal, when finding an accomplice,

one must choose which person would align their intentions such as their goal
best. Another is that one must set their standards in finding their companion for
better outcomes. For one to achieve academic success, individuals must pick
whoever they think fits best and will become useful to them according to Larson
et al. (2012) as quoted by Palacios et al. (2024)

Furthermore, a student’s performance does not automatically improve by

having friends. The variable would still depend on which type of friend one has.
According to Alotaibi et Al. (2023), the connection between bonds and
performances may hinge on students choosing their friends based on
performance compatibility or somewhere that resembles them.

Considering the statements mentioned above, the researchers perceive a

need to delve into the impact of friendship on the lives of college students. The
study aimed to explore the impact of friendship on the academic life of college
students.

DON BOSCO ACADEMY - BACOLOR

KAPIT BISIG: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF FRIENDSHIP IN… 7

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to understand the role of having friends on the

performance of civil engineering angelites. It specifically sought to know the
influence of friendship in their daily lives academically, be it the influence, or
adversity.
Specifically, it aimed to answer the following research questions:
1. How is having friends important while studying in college?
2. How do friendships affect the academic performance of college students?
3. How do college students maintain good academic performance while
maintaining their relationships with friends?

Theoretical Framework

The Theory Of Friendship: Pleasure, Goodness, Utility which was coined

by Aristotle was the foundation of this research. It helped the researchers
achieve their goal of researching and understanding the experience of college
students regarding the role of friendship on the academic performance of a
student. This theory focuses on the role of friendships in happiness and
unhappiness, the researchers used this as a basis to search for the influence of
friendship on a college student, specifically on his academic performance. As
stated by Leibowitz (2018), recognizing the value of oneself to a friend will also
impact a person’s self-worth linking friendship and happiness.

Schwartz (2007), who reviewed Aristotle's Theory Of Friendship: Pleasure,

Goodness, Utility, says that a friend is "another self" or an extension of oneself,
when an individual wishes good fortune upon themselves, at the same time a
person wishes good fortune for the friend. Aristotle says that friendship is a basic
component and condition of happiness, so much so that solitude is more difficult
even if each item needed is given. Mutual affection, goodwill, and
acknowledgment of that affection and goodwill are three factors directly involved
in friendship.

DON BOSCO ACADEMY - BACOLOR

KAPIT BISIG: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF FRIENDSHIP IN… 8

Friendship plays a significant role in the progress of a person's well-being.

According to O'Hagan (2024), friendship is beneficial to a person and it can serve
as a means for moral progress and personal self-actualization, he mentioned the
concept of friendship can improve the performance of a person and if said person
is a student it would also enhance their performance affect their academic
performance. Additionally, Leibowitz (2018) says that the increase in self-worth
that comes from friendship contributes to one's own, as well as the other's
happiness. Understanding the benefits of friendship can improve the
comprehension of how an Angelite's academic success in the civil engineering
course may be impacted and affected by friendship.

Scope and Delimitation

The scope of this study sought to find the role of friendship on college
students and how it affects their academic performance. The main purpose of the
study was to point out the influence of friendship on college students and
whether it affects their academic performance. It focused on the various positive
effects that friends had on the academic performance of college students. This
study was delimited only to a specific group of friends and college students in the
Civil Engineering program at Holy Angel University.

A purposive and convenience sample was used to identify the participants

with conformity to the criteria set by the researchers. The participants were
limited to four (4) and each was asked using the guide questions made by the
researchers regarding the study's main objectives. The data-gathering procedure
was organized virtually in April 2024 with limited resources and timeframe. The
main source of data was through audio recordings and online semi-structured
interviews.

Social Support - any type of comfort given by people you’re close with that
improves yourself, performance, and mentality.
Angelites - students who study at Holy Angel University

Chapter 2

Method
This chapter delves into the research design, participants, instruments,
gathering procedure, and data analysis of the study.

Research Design

The researchers employed a qualitative descriptive for the study's

research design. Qualitative research focuses on the views of individuals of the
meaning of various areas of their lives, as well as their understanding of the
behaviors and beliefs of others and themselves (UK Research and Innovation,
n.d.). According to Siedlecki (2020), descriptive studies aim to describe people,
events, or reasons by observing them in their natural settings. Its relevance can
be used for this study as it aimed to determine and analyze different factors
college students experience, considering the role of friendship on their overall
academic performance.

Participants of the Study

The researchers chose four (4) current third-year civil-engineering college
students at Holy Angel University as their participants for this study. The
researchers carefully selected the individuals who participated in the study based
on established guidelines that followed the aims and objectives of the research.
The participants were selected depending on the following criteria: (1) must be a

DON BOSCO ACADEMY - BACOLOR

KAPIT BISIG: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF FRIENDSHIP IN…
11
college student; (2) must be majoring in civil engineering; (3) must be enrolled in
Holy Angel University; (4) must be in a friend group; and (5) must not have a
grade lower than 2.5. The researchers utilized purposive and convenience
sampling techniques in determining the participants.

Instruments

The study collected raw data from the participants using a semi-structured
interview containing formulated questions that the researchers had prepared.
Additionally, the researchers and participants had a conversational approach
during the interview, which was the strategy employed to collect the data. A
recorder was used during the interview for documentation as evidence of the
interview from their thoughts on the impact of friendship on academic
performance in college. The approach utilized by the researchers made it
possible for them to get the participants' profound perceptions. According to
Stake (1995), as quoted by Kasim (2006), conducting an interview would yield
additional information, which then would be examined and the remaining
information removed.

Construction and Validation of Questionnaire

To get the essential information on our objective of understanding the

impact of friendship on academic performance, the researchers designed a
pre-existing interview questionnaire that complies with the study's goal. This
serves to gather information regarding the different experiences and opinions of
the participants so that the researchers may analyze the patterns, similarities,
and differences between them. The questions were validated and confirmed by
an expert in psychology who specializes in this topic.

The researchers included the expert's thoughts, views, and suggestions

regarding the interview questions that were implemented in the data collection
procedure.

DON BOSCO ACADEMY - BACOLOR

KAPIT BISIG: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF FRIENDSHIP IN…
12
Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers prepared a questionnaire that asked the target

participants to answer, and an approval letter to conduct the interview, which was
validated first by the research adviser. The participants were asked to participate
in the study through the validated letter that informed them about the objectives
of the research and the criteria for participation. The validated letter was sent to
the target participants’ Gmail accounts to request their consent and notify them if
the interview was to be conducted online or in person.

The researchers conducted the interview virtually through Google Meet.

Before the interview, the researchers explained the objectives, purpose, and
procedure of the study including the amount of time the interview was taken. The
researchers considered the availability of the intended participants to participate
in the interview. Considering the interview took place online, the researchers
requested the participants' consent before recording the session. Furthermore,
the participants were free to respond to the questions in their preferred language
choice and were not required by the researchers to turn on their cameras.
Moreover, the researchers anticipated a prolonged interview period, as it is
expected that the researchers would have follow-up questions based on the
participants' responses. Lastly, all the information collected in the interview,
including the identity of the participants was kept confidential for the privacy of
the participants.

Data Analysis

The gathered data was analyzed thematically. According to Braun and

Clark (2006), thematic analysis is a qualitative data analysis that involves finding,
analyzing, and reporting patterns or themes in the participants' answers. The
following processes showed the analysis of the data that the researchers have
gathered thoroughly.
(i) Getting familiar with the data. This involves the transcribing and
reviewing of the data, and taking preliminary notes as needed.

DON BOSCO ACADEMY - BACOLOR

KAPIT BISIG: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF FRIENDSHIP IN…
13
(ii) Creating initial codes. Researchers systematically identified and
labeled the essential elements of the data, integrating relevant information for
each code.

(iii) Identifying themes. Researchers grouped the codes into relevant

categories, looked for patterns, and gathered the necessary information for each
theme.

(iv) Reviewing themes. Using a thematic map, researchers combined

coded extracts of data(Level 1) and the entirety of the data analysis (Level 2).

(v) Defining and naming themes. Researchers labeled and

characterized each theme, aiding in specifying its focus.

(vi) Producing the report. The final step involves extracting key
information to fulfill the research objectives.
Through this method, the researchers were able to obtain all the required
quality information needed to meet the research objectives.

Ethical Considerations

The study's participants' anonymity and confidentiality were maintained by

withholding their names and other personally identifiable information from the
data collection, examination, and reporting of the gathered data. The interview
setting's confidentiality and privacy were strictly monitored throughout the online
conversation, interviews, data processing, and distribution of the results.

Chapter 3

Findings and Discussion

This chapter shows the discoveries and analysis according to the stated
problems of this study.

Importance of Friends while Studying in College

Friends can benefit an individual in various ways in life as they have their
roles which determines how they can help a person. Friends are there to
eliminate loneliness by providing entertainment and joy to one another. According
to Catherine et al. (2017), Friends have their own part in the life of a person.
They share more stories with their friend as they provide companionship.

In addition to this, Altermatt (2007) as quoted by Palacios et al. (2024)

stated that due to the proximity and the interaction of students, their
contemporary share a unique standpoint towards the scores, the pace, and
proficiency which is when finishing tasks, the amount of effort exerted and lastly,
the help and received help coming from their compeers. College students
recognize various aspects of their fellow college students in how they perform
both in academics and the number of interactions to helping or getting helped by
others.

DON BOSCO ACADEMY - BACOLOR

KAPIT BISIG: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF FRIENDSHIP IN…
15
Furthermore, friends of a college individual provide their own unique roles
to their friends such as being there to provide support in various ways such as
giving motivational support, academic support, and emotional support. Friends
who are able to provide this reduce the difficulty of college for the individual as
the person increases the chance of successfully coping and withstand challenges
with the help of friends. The following themes are shaped based on the
participants’ thoughts regarding the importance of friends while studying in
college.

Theme 1. Building and Acquiring Better Experience

College is a period in life, where it is not purely about academics anymore,

it is a stage in a student's life where they seemingly reset almost all the
relationships they had formed in the past as a result of going to different paths.
This does not mean that the experience that they have acquired from their whole
lives resets as well. College is a transformative period during which the students
gain more experience. During this stage, they gain new friends which results in
acquiring better experience. Such scenarios can be observed from the
experiences of our participants. They explained and narrated how their friends
made their experiences much better and held a higher value in their college lives.
Building experience requires the students to be able to cultivate their personal
growth and the discovery of themselves. Having friends will make it easier for
them to be able to gain access to these important prerequisites of acquiring
valuable experience in their lives. According to Adams et al. (2015) by engaging
in friend groups, the people exchanged initiatives, gained knowledge that each of
the people gathered from each respectable field of their expertise, and offered
support which enabled them to flourish more.

Friends are a great necessity for college students, as they are capable of
making their lives, and the experiences that they go through much more
meaningful and enjoyable. Friends also help with the betterment of the academic
performance of college students, with examples of helping each other motivating

one another, and being there for them during stressful times. In the
establishment of this theme, (3) three out of (4) four participants stated that:

“ Importante itong mga kaibigan natin sa college kase isa to sa mga

nagtatanggal ng stress ganon, pwede kayo gumawa ng mga group
studies, and nag-eenrich ito ng learning experience, and syempre
to enjoy your time in college.” ( These friends of ours in college are
important because they are one of the factors that removes stress,
you can conduct group studies with them, which in turn enriches
the learning experience, and of course to enjoy your time in
college.) - P1

“Para sakin pag may friends ka sa college sobrang laking impact

yan lalo na sa bilang sa academic life pati sa social life outside
school, siguro sila yung mga andiyan para makatulong sayo mag
survive sa college lalo na pag hirap ang course.” (For me if you
have friends in college, it makes a significant impact especially as
part of our academic life as well as our social life outside school,
maybe at times they are the ones there to help you to survive
college especially if the course is challenging.) - P2

“So for me kase knowing how difficult college can be it’s very
important that you surround yourself with good people and people
na will benefit you in a positive way pero syempre dapat ikaw din
makapag contribute ka sa kanila ng maganda kumbaga give and

take as whoever maybe in your circle in your college life will be a
huge factor.) - P3

Theme 2. Providing Comfort

College students with friends are better in spirit as explained by the

participant of the researchers. An example of a scenario is when there are many
tasks needed to be done which of course, during these times will prove to be
stressful. It is during these times that our friends comfort us through words and
deeds, lifting our mood to be able to complete such tasks. They also provide us
with their motivational support at tough times during college.

Additionally, Suzuki (2010) stated that the act of comforting involves various
parallel or sub-speech acts that contain soothing, encouraging, sympathizing,
offering advice, and simply giving support to comfort someone successfully.
Providing comfort is an act wherein a person needs to talk to an individual with
the intent of attempting to lift their mood from any negative negligence that needs
to be diminished. These are the responses that helped in shaping this theme.
Two (2) out of (4) four participants stated that:
.
“For example nga tulad ng sinabi ko kapag marami ng binibigay na
task ganon and quizzes, isa sila sa mga nagpapatanggal ng stress
yun, nagtutulungan ganun, sa pagbibigay ng mga motivational
support.”(For example, as I said, when there are many tasks and
quizzes, they are one of the things that relieve stress, helping each
other, by giving providing motivational support.) - P1

“Importante na kase nga diba sobrang hirap ng college dahil nga

second year na kame, pahirap na ng pahirap tas kung kung magisa
kalang parang na bu-burn out ka yung parang pag nahihirapan ka
wala kang karamay ganon pero pag may friends ka tapos yung

yung college at tsaka mas mababawasan yung mga stress ganon,

yun.” (It's important, because college is so difficult and we are in
our second year, so it's getting harder and harder if you're alone,
you will get burnt out, it's like when you're struggling and you don't
have sympathy, but when you have friends, then the friends help
you to get up, it will make college easier and also remove stress.) -

Theme 3. Building Trust

According to Coleman (1988) as quoted by Pertanika (2011) having

close friends within the same society makes people build trust and cooperation.
This is because people are more imposed with a closed network rather than an
open one. Establishing trust is easier when an individual has a close and private
relationship with the person rather than having no privacy at all. Because of this
privacy, the building of trust happens when the individual comfortably shares
personal matters with no hindrances.

Building trust is important to the life of a person as it is one of the crucial

components of having a deep bond with a person. Placing trust in a person is
similar to gambling where the individual sets expectations towards the person. If
the required expectations are not met then the individual would rather cut the
attempt to build trust. Trust happens when a person is ready to be vulnerable on
the fundament of positive expectations towards the person according to Mayer et
al., (1995) as quoted by Rahmanawati et al., (2020)

A person who trusts someone is when an individual rants to their

friends and shows reliance on them. In this way, the friends of the individual
understand that their friend trusts them which leads to the actual building of trust.
A person who shows weak points or who asks for help means that the individual
could not handle it by themself alone. Therefore, this is where reliance appears
as the individual gives a hint that they need the people whom they trust to help

19
them. This theme was conceptualized based on two (2) out of four (4) responses
of the participants.

“Sobrang essential nito sa mga college students dahil nagbibigay

ito ng mga ano- ng mga motivational support, nagbabawas ng
stress, tsaka yun nga pwede ka makapag-rant sa kanila kapag may
mga problema ka.” (It is very essential for college students because
it provides motivational support, reduces stress, and you can rant to
them whenever you have problems.) - P1

“Siguro yung scenario na unang pumasok sa utak ko yung kunwari

meron kang mga, kunwari sa case ko may sinasolve ka pero wala
kang di mo makuha yung tamang sagot, siguro yung friends mo
andiyan para makatulong sayo, para turuan ang isa’t isa.” (The first
scenario that came up to my mind, for example in my case is when
you are solving something but you can’t solve for the right answer,
your friends are probably there to help you, so you can teach each
other) - P2

Theme 4. Being Open to Learn

Being open to your friends is an important prerequisite to learning new

things. Having friends is the norm for college students to enable them to
thoroughly learn new things in life just as the participants stated friends are
essential, especially in college with openness being the way and your friends
being the guide for you to start learning and going through not just college, but
life itself.

Furthermore, according to Jouret (2009) as quoted by Drechsler (2012) by

expanding the thoughts of people by being open to the ideas of each other,
individuals are enabled to gather more ideas which results in a discovery or
innovation. By simply sharing personal perceptions and listening to the insights of

DON BOSCO ACADEMY - BACOLOR

KAPIT BISIG: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF FRIENDSHIP IN…
20
others, people gain knowledge that can be used to make theories, hypotheses,
and concepts that are judged by fellow people.

In addition, earning insights from the company of an individual is important

as it is essential for learning. Each of their ideas is partial and can be pieced
together in order to get a holistic understanding of one topic or concept. An
example of this is when a group is brainstorming about a certain topic. Each of
them comes up with a standpoint of their own which they discuss thoroughly.
After gathering all standpoints and understanding them, the group comes up with
their own concept and finally, their conclusion. The following statement helped in
formulating this theme. One (1) out of (4) four participants said that:

“I consider na yung friends, or having friends ay talagang essential

siya sa college, kunware kum baga yung mga insights nila,
important din siya saken.” (I consider friends, or having friends, is
really essential in college, for example their insights, they are also
important to me.) - P2

Impact of Friendships on the Academic Performance of College Students

Friendships have a solid impact on the academic performance of an

individual. It could be in many ways whether it impacts the college student
positively or the opposite. Some of the positive impacts of friendship on
academic performance are being influenced by their peers to perform better in
their academics in order to receive a good academic result. Another outcome is
successfully adopting good academic practices such as being encouraged to
study which results in being prepared for possible natural events such as
examinations.

Furthermore, the overall attitude or results coming from the college

student is often influenced by the friends of the individual because of the certain
practices or attitudes that have been nurtured that occur to the environment. The

21
experience of the student depends on the presented environment where friends
play a major role in influencing the point of view or experience of the person.
There is evidence that friends have a significant impact on learning, behavior,
and enjoyment (Alotaibi et al., 2023).

In addition, Dechant (2011) stated that friends have a direct or indirect

impact on the academic performance of an individual. Direct impact comes from
direct teaching such as initiating group studies with friends. Indirect impact on the
other hand happens through emotional factors which affect the performance of
the individual. There are plenty of factors that affect the overall academic
performance of a student. These certain factors depend on which attitude their
friends have such as being competitive or being generally active. Friends also
affect an individual by directly interacting with them by offering them a review
which is beneficial for each person and results in an outcome on their
performance. The following themes were produced from the thematic analysis
and interview results:

Theme 1. Motivating One Another to Strive to Become Better

To become better is one thing college students strive for. Within a group of
friends, it starts by motivating each other to become better. As they reach
college, most students sort themselves into different friend groups that meet their
particular preferences and purposes. It encourages them to have a change in
their mindsets to reach their goals, as stated by the participants. With the
influence of others, it possesses a type of friendly competition between each
other.

Furthermore, according to Dishion & Dodge, (2005); Poulin & Boivin,

(2000); Haselager et al., (1998) as quoted by Palacios & Berger (2022) Early
adolescents usually tend to display similar characteristics and attributes to
others. Those similarities go into a selection process in which they choose each

other based on shared characteristics or social influence, through learning from
others.

In addition, Blansky et al., (2013) as quoted by Palacios & Berger (2022)

Students tend to change their behaviors or attitudes both positive and negative
depending on the response to the behaviors of their friends. The responses
made by (4) four of the participants that emphasized this theme are presented
below:

“Depende naman ito sa mga kinakasama mo. Syempre pag

maayos at masisipag mga kinakasama mo, maganda ang magiging
environment mo at mas lalo kang masisipagin at gaganahan ka
mag-aral dahil ‘yun nga tulad ng mga sinabi ko nagkakaroon ng
motivational support.”(It depends on who you are with. Of course, if
the people you are with are proper and hardworking, you will have
a good environment and you will work harder and study harder
because just like what I said, you have motivational support.) - P1

“I think na I certainly improved pero may lalabas kasing competition

between isa’t isa na nag papamotivate na para mag aral mabuti o
kaya do well in exams or quizzes.” (I think I have certainly
improved, however, there will be competition between each other
that motivates me to study hard or do well in exams or quizzes.) -
P2

“Nagiging guide sila kase, ako kunware, yun nanga first year ka, “i
tinatamad ako magreview ganyan syempre galing kang online class
tas biglang shift sa face to face tas college agad parang i tinatamad
akong magreview ganyan formula nanaman engineering, pero sila
parang “uy dapat magreview tayo di pwedeng umasa sa iba” tas
goal talaga namen na sabay sabay mag graduate so yun, parang
ginaguidde nila ko no wag masyadong mag paka chill wag

masyadong mag panatag na - and umasa sa iba hanggang sa iyon,
nag aaral na din” (They become a guide because, me for example,
when you're in your first year you think "I'm too lazy to review, of
course you're from an online class, but it suddenly shifts to
face-to-face, in college, it's like I'm too lazy to review the formula for
engineering " but they're like, “hey, we should review, we can't rely
on others" and our goal is to graduate at the same time, it's like
they're guiding me not to chill too much, don't be too confident - and
rely on others until then, I'm still studying) - P3

“Mismong sila natutulungan nila ako, na mag review, like yung

influence na binibigay nila yung motivation na binibigay nila saken,
tas dun mo mafefeel yung, parang naniniwala sila, sayo sa
kakayahan mo” (They help me themselves, to review, like the
influence they give, the motivation they give me, you can feel it, it's
like they believe in you and your abilities) - P4

Theme 2. Generates Good Academic Practices

When a student has great academic practices, it often means that the
academic performance of the student will be good as well. It means that the
result coming from the performance varies from what practices the student has.
Friendship generates good academic performance by simply being influenced by
their practices which results in a positive impact such as gaining a higher GPA.

Furthermore, according to Fouch (2017) as quoted by Tus (2020) good

academic practices include doing homework, actively participating in class, good
time management, staying focused, and lastly working hard in general. These
good practices show positive outcomes on academic performance. These certain
academic practices may improve the performance of the individual which they
can adopt at any time. The responses of the (4) four participants served as the
basis for conceptualizing this theme.

“Siguro isa yung mga na-influence nila sakin is yung pagkakaroon

ng ano group studies, or pagkakaroon ng study techniques para
pagaaralin yung certain topic nato or paggawa ng mga projects.”
(Maybe one of the things that influenced me is having group
studies, or having study techniques to study our certain topic or
making projects) - P1

“Before sa senior high hindi man ako nag rereview pero nung this
college parang na influence ako mag review ilang days or weeks
before para sa major exam or quizzes.” (Before senior high, I didn’t
review at all, but now in college, I was influenced to review a few
days or weeks before the major exam or quizzes.) - P2

“Yung magreview ka days prior ng exams niyo, kase dati if meron

kaming quizzes bukas, ngayong gabe mag c-cram kami. Pero
ngayon napractice namen na days before mag aadvance reading
na kame papractice nanamen mga formula, solution na di namen
alam hanggang sa mga yon, yon siguro mag practice kayo and
ready kayo days prior ng exam nyo hindi yung nag c cram kayo
night before, wala kayong masasagot, promise.” (You should
review for your exams days prior, because in the past, if we had
quizzes tomorrow, we would cram it tonight. But now we practice
advanced reading days before the exam, we practiced the
formulas, and solutions that we didn't know, you should practice
and be ready days prior to your exam, and don't cram the night
before, you won't be able to answer anything I promise.) - P3

“Siguro, yung mag - review sa library every vacant namen. Before

every time we are available. Before, usually in our schedule, the
majors have a vacancy for at least 1 hour, during that 1 hour
instead of chilling, I noticed that from them, especially from other
friends, they really try, to squeeze in that 1 hour of reviewing) - P4

College Students Maintaining Good Academic Performance while

Maintaining Relationships with Friends

Maintaining good academic performance while balancing social

relationships can be mostly challenging for college students. On one hand,
friendships are crucial for emotional support, personal development, and overall
well-being. On the other hand, academic success requires dedication, time
management, and focus. Finding a balance between these two aspects of
student life is key.

College students can achieve this balance by setting clear priorities and
boundaries. This means understanding that while friendships are important,
academic responsibilities should not be neglected. Effective time management
skills, such as creating study schedules and setting realistic goals, can help
students allocate time for both academics and social activities. Spending more
quality time by having group studies and doing projects together can improve the
bond of one’s friendship.

Furthermore, according to Mayeux et al., (2011) as quoted by Palacios, D.,

& Berger, C. (2022) High-quality friendships can be achieved by spending more
time together, providing a suitable setting for peer influence. Socially preferred
students are most likely to deepen their relationships with peers, teachers, and
parents. Creating a favorable environment for peer influence on academic
performance.

DON BOSCO ACADEMY - BACOLOR

KAPIT BISIG: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF FRIENDSHIP IN…
26
In addition, according to Cillessen & Berg, (2012); Torrente et al., (2014)
as quoted by Palacios, D., & Berger, C. (2022) Individuals who are
companionable are academically motivated, prosocial, and helpful to peers.
Socially preferred youths are known for being cooperative, kind, and good friends
while still holding a good academic performance. The outcome of the online
interview and thematic analysis helped develop the following themes:

Theme 1. Understanding and Sharing of Each Other's Goals and Priorities

According to Emmons (2005), personal strivings correspond to the usual

ambitions that an individual generally aspires to achieve. Understanding the
Goals and Priorities of friends can be a major reason why the individual would
have a good relationship with their friends. Being able to maintain a student’s
relationship with their friends while maintaining good academic performance is
significantly important as it can avoid fallouts, disputes, and academic problems.
For instance, understanding the goals of others while letting them understand
your priorities, such as focusing first on academic tasks and exams before doing
other social activities. As Emmons (2005) stated, “Goals are highly
personal—they reflect subjective experience, values, and commitments as
uniquely identified by the person.” Getting to know and understand the priorities
and goals of friends can result in stronger bonds and a better understanding of
each other as a student and what they all strive for in both academics and in life.
This would also mean that sometimes the friends of an individual should
understand when matters such as studies must be their priority over them. The
following statements of (3) three out of (4) four participants conceptualized this
theme:

“Ginagawa namin dito to have a good academic performance ay

pagprioritize ng mga tasks namin, tinatapos namin lahat na
pwedeng gawin as a group para makapagtulungan at mabilis
matapos” (What we do to have good academic performance is we

prioritize our tasks first, we finish everything that can be done as a
group so that we can help each other and finish quickly) - P1

“Nagiging motivation na yung competition and parang gusto mong

sabay sabay lahat umangat at grumaduate, pumasa sa mga exam”
(The competition has become the reason for motivation, and it is
like you want to succeed and graduate at the same time and pass
the exams) - P2

“para saken hindi naman siya ganon ka hirap, as long as, yun nga
alam niyo yung goal niyong magkakaibigan” (for me it is not that
difficult, as long as, you know the goal of you and your friends) -
P3

Theme 2. Keep things Balanced and Enjoy the Process

The events that happen around an individual and his friends determine the
outcome of how they balance their schedules, especially before, during, or after
important events such as exams and tasks. The key is maintaining a good
balance in life, which in this scenario, is balanced college life specifically. Being
able to balance schedules does not mean removing all types of leisure activities.
It means transferring the time that is used for more important things, such as
studies, and the future, which then provides time in order to recreate or do leisure
activities with friends. Enjoying the process will result in much more desirable
outcomes in life, rather than being too stern and solely focused on it, having the
capacity to enjoy things makes college life more enjoyable and meaningful.

Furthermore, Brus (2006) as quoted by Martinez et al., (2013) stated

that maintaining the balance of personal life and academic matters with the help
of being prudent significantly impacts the chance of being successful in degree
completion. A student who uses time properly such as making and following
schedules is often efficient as it helps mitigate academic burnout. These

DON BOSCO ACADEMY - BACOLOR

KAPIT BISIG: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF FRIENDSHIP IN…
28
schedules help in having proper time management where there is a proper time
to be with friends and a proper time to focus on academics.

Being excessively exposed to academic matters often leads to mental

exhaustion as stress levels are kept high. In order to avoid mental exhaustion
from academics, it is better for the student to expose themself to social
gatherings such as being with their friends in order to vent out these stresses by
having fun. However, being excessively exposed to social life is unhealthy for
academic matters as it distracts the supposed priorities of the person. This is why
maintaining things balanced such as personal matters and academic matters is
important in able to be successful and enjoying the overall experience. This
theme was shaped based on the responses of (3) three out of (4) four
participants.

“To maintain a healthy relationship ginagawa namin ay kapag

meron kaming free time sa school or like let’s say kakatapos namin
sa exams namin nagplaplano kami umalis namin para yun nga
magpatanggal ng stress sa aming mga katawan” (To maintain a
healthy relationship, what we do is when we have free time at
school or let's say after we finish our exams, we make plans to go
out so that we can remove stress from our bodies) - P1

“Siguro unang una dapat dun yun pag balance ng social life and
academic life lalo na andaming pwedeng gawin ngayon sa outside
the campus, siguro magenjoy kayo together pero at the same time
dapat wag yung tuwing hadlang yung social life sa academic life”
(First of all it should be about balancing social life and academic
life, especially since there is so much that can be done outside the
campus like you can have fun together, but at the same time social
life should not be an obstacle to academic life) - P2

DON BOSCO ACADEMY - BACOLOR

“kapag sa college, para saken, mag enjoy ka while learning, hindi
puro aral, hindi puro lakwatcha, so kunware, may napasa kayo, or
may na ace kang exam or quiz, parang kahit coffee lang ganyan
i-treat niyo yung sarili niyo kase syempre iba parin yung
nirecocognize niyo mismo yung effort, or yung nagawa niyo
ganyan. Soo, yun, parang dapat balanced din talaga lalo na sa
mental health ganiyan kase iba talaga yung lala ng engineering,
yon” (when in college, for me, enjoy yourself while learning, it's not
only studying, it's not only going out, let's pretend, you passed
something, or you aced an exam or quiz, even if it is just coffee
treat yourself, because of course, it's different when you recognize
the effort yourself, or what you achieved. So, it should be balanced,
especially in mental health, because engineering is different) - P4

Theme 3. Possess Good Communication and Strong Understanding

The friends that accompany an individual should be able to understand

one another. Communicating is the key to understanding each other. To be able
to support them during college and especially with their academic performances,
the person needs to understand each other thoroughly, without overstepping
boundaries, especially in difficult times such as exam weeks or being bombarded
with assignments. Good communication results in strong bonds that make them
and their friends comprehend each other which will help a person not only
academically but also in life. This also means that the individual should respect
their goals and time, to know their availability when they want company, and
when they want to be alone. Knowing these patterns means that the person
possesses a strong understanding of their friends. This also means that they
know how to communicate with them properly. According to Calvo-Armengol et
al. (2014), strong communication plays a strong role in relationships such as
when two people have a stronger exogenous interaction, the stronger their bond
becomes.

DON BOSCO ACADEMY - BACOLOR

KAPIT BISIG: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF FRIENDSHIP IN…
30

In addition, as stated by Payne (2013), before a person relates to

someone or states their opinions or statements, comprehending by
understanding the case of someone is important in order to successfully have a
proper conversation. Instantly making a statement or a conversation without a
valid understanding of a certain topic or scenario is invalid as it often leads to an
argument. It is important to properly understand someone in order to maintain
their bond.

“ Parang nag iintindihan dapat parang inintindi niyo din yung bawat
isa ganon, di naman kailangan na lagi kang available sakanila
tsaka naiintindihan din nila yon kaya humahanap ka talaga ng
friends sa circle mo na magkakaintindihan kayo para.. Yun di
mawawwala yung friends mo at the same time maayos yung
academic performance mo” (You should understand each other,
you don't need to always be available, and they also understand
that, that's why you should look for friends in your circle who
understand you, so that you won't lose your friends and at the same
time your academic performance is good) - P3

Chapter 4

Conclusion and Recommendation

After a thorough process of analyzing and collecting data, the researchers

have come up with the significant findings of the study:

Summary of Findings

1. Importance of Friends while Studying in College

Friends have a big impact on college students and can frequently increase
a student's openness to learn so they can study more productively while in

DON BOSCO ACADEMY - BACOLOR

KAPIT BISIG: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF FRIENDSHIP IN…
31
college. Friends can help each other with challenging problems or difficult
questions and reduce stress by making plans, boosting morale, and having fun.
Even if the results aren't always favorable, friends still have a big influence on a
college student.

2. Impact of Friendships on the Academic Performance of College Students

A college student's academic performance is greatly enhanced by their

friendships. A college student will probably see a significant boost in their
academic performance if their friendship is well-maintained and properly
organized. On the other hand, if a student's friendship is poorly managed and
has a messy schedule, the student may see a decline in academic performance
as well as an increase in stress.

3. College Students Maintaining Good Academic Performance while

Maintaining Relationships with Friends

It can be extremely difficult to maintain a stable relationship with friends

while also achieving good academic performance, especially when they are
pressed for time and have busy schedules, but doing so is crucial because it will
significantly improve a college student’s academic performance and reduce
stress while also allowing them to enjoy themselves.

Conclusions

Based on the indicated findings, the following conclusions were drawn:

1. Having friends in college not only boosts academic performance, but also
reduces stress, improves the study experience, and creates opportunities
to build experiences with friends.
2. Friendships will almost always benefit studies and improve willingness to
study, whether via cooperation and helping each other, or healthy
competition and aiming to be better than each other.

3. Maintaining a good relationship with friends helps enhance
communication, deepen friendships, strengthen trust, and teach managing
your time wisely.

Recommendations

Based on the conclusion of the gathered data, the following are hereby
recommended.

1.) College Students. Assess whether their friends have any positive or
negative effects on their studies. This will help them be more aware of
their friendships and how it can affect their studies.
2.) Incoming College Students. Learn the importance of friends and the
factors of a friendship that can affect the studies of a student. Doing so will
help them be more aware of how friends can affect their studies, as well
as help them manage their social life and academic life.
3.) College Institutes. Students should be given seminars or formation talks
about which type of friends students should have. This can help them be
aware if they are surrounded by the correct type of people that will not
affect their lives negatively.
4.) Future Researchers. May investigate a topic centered on the struggles of
managing relationships and academic achievement simultaneously, as
well as the consequences of wrongly managing relationships and
academic performance.
