KAPIT BISIG: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF FRIENDSHIP IN… 1
Chapter 1
Introduction
During the period of college, this is when students face many obstacles
and hardships in life, especially academically. Throughout these times, college
students meet and interact with many people. They connect with their
co-students which can form a special bond. This special bond that has been
formed enables them to rely on each other during difficult times.
In the Philippines, the people use the term Kapit Bisig to indicate a great
feeling of being together. Chico (2012) defined in his study that Kapit Bisig is “
helping others in times of need.” For instance, this term can be applied to a
group of friends. Within a friend group, each friend would help each other out
when one is facing problems or is struggling. In the same way, in her study,
Cuizon (2021) stated that Kapit Bisig represents collaboration between
individuals working toward a shared objective. It indicates that individuals who
share the feeling of Kapit Bisig with each other aim to not leave each other
behind throughout the process and for them to achieve their goals together. This
may be used to describe a group of friends in college that support one another in
reaching their objectives, graduating together, and not letting anybody fall behind.
between the two. In addition, Gompers et al. (2012) claimed that people are
considered friends if they are more likely to collaborate with those who share
similar characteristics with them. These similarities can be divided into two
classes. Characteristics related to ability where both individuals get into a top
university, and characteristics related to affinity where both individuals have the
same background and interests. Similar characteristics and interests will make
people collaborate better and have deep mutual care and understanding.
for human happiness and well-being. Either in minimal ways, such as making
someone feel better, striking up a conversation, or offering assistance with an
ongoing task, The influence of friends greatly shapes a person's mood and
character. Being rewarded with such feelings by small actions from friends gives
motivation and helps deepen the relationship.
This phase, regarded as the pinnacle of the student's life, is when the majority of
the excitement, challenges, and struggles occur.
On the other hand, in the same study, Alotaibi et al. (2023) claimed that
having excessive social distractions distracts the student from focusing on
academics, which results in low GPA outcomes. Because of this effect on one's
GPA from excessive social distractions, spending time on socialization shall be
limited for the student to balance time on both social life and academics.
Theoretical Framework
The scope of this study sought to find the role of friendship on college
students and how it affects their academic performance. The main purpose of the
study was to point out the influence of friendship on college students and
whether it affects their academic performance. It focused on the various positive
effects that friends had on the academic performance of college students. This
study was delimited only to a specific group of friends and college students in the
Civil Engineering program at Holy Angel University.
Definition of Terms
Chapter 2
Method
This chapter delves into the research design, participants, instruments,
gathering procedure, and data analysis of the study.
Research Design
Instruments
The study collected raw data from the participants using a semi-structured
interview containing formulated questions that the researchers had prepared.
Additionally, the researchers and participants had a conversational approach
during the interview, which was the strategy employed to collect the data. A
recorder was used during the interview for documentation as evidence of the
interview from their thoughts on the impact of friendship on academic
performance in college. The approach utilized by the researchers made it
possible for them to get the participants' profound perceptions. According to
Stake (1995), as quoted by Kasim (2006), conducting an interview would yield
additional information, which then would be examined and the remaining
information removed.
Data Analysis
(vi) Producing the report. The final step involves extracting key
information to fulfill the research objectives.
Through this method, the researchers were able to obtain all the required
quality information needed to meet the research objectives.
Ethical Considerations
Chapter 3
This chapter shows the discoveries and analysis according to the stated
problems of this study.
Friends can benefit an individual in various ways in life as they have their
roles which determines how they can help a person. Friends are there to
eliminate loneliness by providing entertainment and joy to one another. According
to Catherine et al. (2017), Friends have their own part in the life of a person.
They share more stories with their friend as they provide companionship.
Friends are a great necessity for college students, as they are capable of
making their lives, and the experiences that they go through much more
meaningful and enjoyable. Friends also help with the betterment of the academic
performance of college students, with examples of helping each other motivating
“So for me kase knowing how difficult college can be it’s very
important that you surround yourself with good people and people
na will benefit you in a positive way pero syempre dapat ikaw din
makapag contribute ka sa kanila ng maganda kumbaga give and
take lang syempre, kase malaking factor talaga yung magiging
circle mo sa college life mo.” (So for me knowing how difficult
college can be it is very important that you surround yourself with
good people and people that will be beneficial for you in a positive
way but of course, you also have positive contributions for them
and their well-being so to speak, of course, it should be give and
Additionally, Suzuki (2010) stated that the act of comforting involves various
parallel or sub-speech acts that contain soothing, encouraging, sympathizing,
offering advice, and simply giving support to comfort someone successfully.
Providing comfort is an act wherein a person needs to talk to an individual with
the intent of attempting to lift their mood from any negative negligence that needs
to be diminished. These are the responses that helped in shaping this theme.
Two (2) out of (4) four participants stated that:
.
“For example nga tulad ng sinabi ko kapag marami ng binibigay na
task ganon and quizzes, isa sila sa mga nagpapatanggal ng stress
yun, nagtutulungan ganun, sa pagbibigay ng mga motivational
support.”(For example, as I said, when there are many tasks and
quizzes, they are one of the things that relieve stress, helping each
other, by giving providing motivational support.) - P1
To become better is one thing college students strive for. Within a group of
friends, it starts by motivating each other to become better. As they reach
college, most students sort themselves into different friend groups that meet their
particular preferences and purposes. It encourages them to have a change in
their mindsets to reach their goals, as stated by the participants. With the
influence of others, it possesses a type of friendly competition between each
other.
“Nagiging guide sila kase, ako kunware, yun nanga first year ka, “i
tinatamad ako magreview ganyan syempre galing kang online class
tas biglang shift sa face to face tas college agad parang i tinatamad
akong magreview ganyan formula nanaman engineering, pero sila
parang “uy dapat magreview tayo di pwedeng umasa sa iba” tas
goal talaga namen na sabay sabay mag graduate so yun, parang
ginaguidde nila ko no wag masyadong mag paka chill wag
When a student has great academic practices, it often means that the
academic performance of the student will be good as well. It means that the
result coming from the performance varies from what practices the student has.
Friendship generates good academic performance by simply being influenced by
their practices which results in a positive impact such as gaining a higher GPA.
“Before sa senior high hindi man ako nag rereview pero nung this
college parang na influence ako mag review ilang days or weeks
before para sa major exam or quizzes.” (Before senior high, I didn’t
review at all, but now in college, I was influenced to review a few
days or weeks before the major exam or quizzes.) - P2
College students can achieve this balance by setting clear priorities and
boundaries. This means understanding that while friendships are important,
academic responsibilities should not be neglected. Effective time management
skills, such as creating study schedules and setting realistic goals, can help
students allocate time for both academics and social activities. Spending more
quality time by having group studies and doing projects together can improve the
bond of one’s friendship.
“para saken hindi naman siya ganon ka hirap, as long as, yun nga
alam niyo yung goal niyong magkakaibigan” (for me it is not that
difficult, as long as, you know the goal of you and your friends) -
P3
The events that happen around an individual and his friends determine the
outcome of how they balance their schedules, especially before, during, or after
important events such as exams and tasks. The key is maintaining a good
balance in life, which in this scenario, is balanced college life specifically. Being
able to balance schedules does not mean removing all types of leisure activities.
It means transferring the time that is used for more important things, such as
studies, and the future, which then provides time in order to recreate or do leisure
activities with friends. Enjoying the process will result in much more desirable
outcomes in life, rather than being too stern and solely focused on it, having the
capacity to enjoy things makes college life more enjoyable and meaningful.
“Siguro unang una dapat dun yun pag balance ng social life and
academic life lalo na andaming pwedeng gawin ngayon sa outside
the campus, siguro magenjoy kayo together pero at the same time
dapat wag yung tuwing hadlang yung social life sa academic life”
(First of all it should be about balancing social life and academic
life, especially since there is so much that can be done outside the
campus like you can have fun together, but at the same time social
life should not be an obstacle to academic life) - P2
“ Parang nag iintindihan dapat parang inintindi niyo din yung bawat
isa ganon, di naman kailangan na lagi kang available sakanila
tsaka naiintindihan din nila yon kaya humahanap ka talaga ng
friends sa circle mo na magkakaintindihan kayo para.. Yun di
mawawwala yung friends mo at the same time maayos yung
academic performance mo” (You should understand each other,
you don't need to always be available, and they also understand
that, that's why you should look for friends in your circle who
understand you, so that you won't lose your friends and at the same
time your academic performance is good) - P3
Chapter 4
Summary of Findings
Friends have a big impact on college students and can frequently increase
a student's openness to learn so they can study more productively while in
Conclusions
1. Having friends in college not only boosts academic performance, but also
reduces stress, improves the study experience, and creates opportunities
to build experiences with friends.
2. Friendships will almost always benefit studies and improve willingness to
study, whether via cooperation and helping each other, or healthy
competition and aiming to be better than each other.
Recommendations
Based on the conclusion of the gathered data, the following are hereby
recommended.
1.) College Students. Assess whether their friends have any positive or
negative effects on their studies. This will help them be more aware of
their friendships and how it can affect their studies.
2.) Incoming College Students. Learn the importance of friends and the
factors of a friendship that can affect the studies of a student. Doing so will
help them be more aware of how friends can affect their studies, as well
as help them manage their social life and academic life.
3.) College Institutes. Students should be given seminars or formation talks
about which type of friends students should have. This can help them be
aware if they are surrounded by the correct type of people that will not
affect their lives negatively.
4.) Future Researchers. May investigate a topic centered on the struggles of
managing relationships and academic achievement simultaneously, as
well as the consequences of wrongly managing relationships and
academic performance.
