Mathematics-in-the-Modern-World-Research-Project-Guidelines

The Mathematics in the Modern World Research Project aims to enhance understanding of mathematics through a group survey study relevant to the school community. Groups of 3-5 members will design a survey, analyze data using statistical methods, and present findings in a comprehensive report and oral presentation. Key project components include topic selection, survey design, data analysis, and reflection on the role of mathematics in real-world problem-solving.

Mathematics in the Modern World Research Project Guidelines

Objective:

The objective of this research project is to develop and demonstrate your

understanding and appreciation of the nature of mathematics and its
practical application in describing and solving real-life problems. Your group
will conduct a survey research study on a topic related to your academic
program, with a focus on situations relevant to the school community.

Project Overview:

In a group of 3-5 members, you will design and conduct a survey, organize
and analyze the collected data using mathematical and statistical methods,
and present your findings. The project will allow you to apply mathematical
concepts in a real-world context and demonstrate the role of mathematics in
decision-making and problem-solving.

Steps to Complete the Project:

1. Group/Team Selection. Form groups of 3-5 members. Assign a specific

roles to each member (e.g., survey design, data collection, data
analysis, report writing, presentation). Define the responsibilities to
ensure collaboration and accountability.

2. Topic Selection. You are encouraged to choose a research topic that

interests you and is relevant to your academic program. The topic
should involve a situation related to your academic program and be
applicable to the school community. Submit your chosen topic to your
professor for approval before proceeding. Ensure that the topic allows
for the application of mathematical concepts and is possible for survey
research.

3. Research Questions Development. Survey Design: Develop 10-15

survey questions that will help you gather data on your chosen topic.
The questions should be clear, concise, and relevant to your research
objectives
4. Conducting the Survey.

Target Population: Distribute the survey to a representative sample of

the school community, including students, faculty, or staff. Ensure that
your sample size is sufficient to provide meaningful results.
Ethical Considerations: Obtain consent from respondents and ensure
their anonymity and confidentiality. Be transparent about the purpose
of the research and how the data will be used.

5. Data Analysis. Analyze the collected data using appropriate statistical

methods. This may include calculating averages, percentages, and
identifying patterns or trends. Interpret the results in the context of
your research questions. Discuss the implications of the findings and
how they relate to the real-world situation you are studying.

6. Report your findings. Prepare a comprehensive report (5-15 pages)

that includes:

Introduction: Overview of your research topic and objectives.

Methodology/ Materials and Methods: Description of the survey

design, sample population, and data collection process.

Results and Discussion: Detailed presentation of the analysis,

including tables, graphs, and statistical calculations and
interpretation of the results and their relevance to the research
topic.

Note: Include visual representations of your data, such as charts,

graphs, or infographics, to enhance the clarity of your analysis.

Conclusion: Summary of key findings and their implications for the

school community.

7. Oral Presentation. Prepare a 5- minute presentation summarizing your

research process, findings, and conclusions. Use visual aids (e.g.,
slides, charts) to support your presentation. Be prepared to answer
questions from your classmates and the instructor about your
research.

8. Reflection. Reflect on the research process and how it has deepened

your understanding of the role of mathematics in solving real-world
problems. Individual reflection will be submitted by the students on a
scheduled date.

Submission Requirements:

Topic Proposal: Due [Week 5].

Survey Questions: Submit for review by [Week 7].

Final Report: Due [Week 16].

Presentation: Scheduled for [Week 17].

Evaluation Criteria:

Relevance: Alignment of the research topic with your academic program

(Psychology/Tourism) and its applicability to the school community.

Survey Design: Quality and clarity of survey questions.

Data Analysis: Accurate application of mathematical and statistical methods.

Insight: Depth of interpretation and reflection on the findings.

Presentation: Effectiveness in communicating the research process and

results.

Creativity: Originality in topic selection and approach.

Note:

You are encouraged to seek feedback from your instructor/professor

throughout the project. Regular check-ins can help ensure that you are on
the right track and address any challenges you may encounter.
