BLUFF for incorrect ones.
1. The Earth's outermost layer, the crust, is composed
mainly of solid rock. (Fact)
2. Seismic waves can only travel through solid materials
and cannot pass through liquids or gases. (Bluff)

P-waves can only travel through solids. (Fact)
4. The fastest seismic waves are S-waves which can travel
through the Earth more rapidly than any other type of
seismic wave. (Bluff)

Activity: “"Slinky Shake: Modeling Seismic Waves"
Instructions:
1. Divide the students into small groups of 3-4 members.
2. Provide each group with a Slinky.
3. The teacher will demonstrate how to use the Slinky to
model P-waves and S-waves. Show how compressions
and rarefactions move through the coils for P-waves, and
how the side-to-side movement represents S-waves.
4. In their groups, students should take turns holding the
Slinky horizontally between two people. One student
initiates a P-wave motion by pushing and pulling the
Slinky back and forth. Another student initiates an S-
wave motion by creating a side-to-side movement.
Students will observe and discuss the different behaviors
of the waves.
Guide questions:
1. What did you observe about the motion of P-waves and S-
waves?
2. How might this activity relate to how seismic waves travel
through the Earth?”
D. Explain

A P wave (primary wave) is one of the two main types of

elastic body waves, called seismic waves in seismology.
P waves travel faster than other seismic waves and
hence are the first signal from an earthquake to arrive at
any affected location or at a seismograph. P waves may
be transmitted through gases, liquids, or solids.
Secondary waves (S-waves) are shear waves that are
transverse in nature. Following an earthquake event, S-
waves arrive at seismograph stations after the faster-
moving P-waves and displace the ground perpendicular
to the direction of propagation.

E. Elaborate
What is the behavior of the P waves and S waves inside the
earth?
