66f39ff69cd28376658d6ef8_##_Formula Sheet Application of Definite Integration

The document provides formulas for calculating areas under curves using definite integration, including areas bounded by the X-axis and between two curves. It explains how to handle cases where curves lie below the X-axis and how to calculate areas for symmetrical curves. Additionally, it outlines methods for finding areas when curves intersect and are bounded by the X-axis.

APPLICATION OF DEFINITE INTEGRATION

I. AREA UNDER THE CURVE:
i. The area A bounded by the curve y=f(x), X -axis and the ordinates x=a and x=b is
x =b
y dx =  f ( x ) dx
b
A=
x =a a

Note: If the curve y=f(x) lies below X-axis, then the area bounded by the curve y=f(x), the X -axis and
the ordinates x=a and x=a is negative. So area is given by  ba ydx .

ii. The area A bounded by the curve x=f(y), Y -axis and the lines y=c and y=d is
y =d
x dy =  f ( y ) dy
d
A=
y =c c

II. SYMMETRICAL AREA:

If the curve is symmetrical about a coordinate axis (or a line or origin), then we find the area of one
symmetrical portion and multiply it by the number of symmetrical portions to get the required area.

III. AREA BOUNDED BY TWO CURVES:

i.
If the curves y1=f1 (x) and y2=f2 (x) intersect at two points A(x=a) and B(x=b), then the area between the
curves is given by

Area =  f1 ( x ) dx −  f 2 ( x ) dx =   f1 ( x ) dx − f 2 ( x )  dx =  ( y1 − y2 ) dx
b b b b

a a a a

ii.

When two curves intersect at a point and the area between them is bounded by X-axis:
If y1= f1(x) and y2 = f2(x) are two curves which intersect at P(x=c) and meet X -axis at A(x=a) and B(x=b)
respectively, then area between them and X -axis is given by area =  0a f1 ( x ) dx +  bc f 2 ( x ) dx

Note: The area A bounded by the curve y=f(x), X-axis and the ordinates x=a and x=b is given by A=A1+|A2
|A=A1+|A2 |, where A1 =  ca f ( x ) dx and A2 =  bc f ( x ) dx
