Korean is the official language of both South Korea (Republic of
Korea) and North Korea (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea).

The two Koreas differ in minor spelling, alphabetization, and

vocabulary choice, but both essentially endorse the unified
standards proposed by the Korean Language Society in 1933.
Evidence suggests that Korean and
Japanese belong to the Altaic language
family, which also includes Turkish and
Mongolian, while others believe it came
from the Chinese.
The origins of the Korean language can be
traced back to ancient times, with the
earliest records dating to around 3 BCE.

The language spoken during this period,

often referred to as "Old Korean" or
"Proto-Korean,"
One of the most significant
milestones in the development of
the Korean language was the
creation of Hangul, the Korean
writing system, by King Sejong
the Great in the 15th century.
Hangul is the Korean alphabet since 1443.
The credit of its invention goes to ‘King Sejong of the Yi Dynasty (1392-1910).

King Sejong (1397-1450) commissioned the development of a phonetic script

that was both more efficient and easier for ordinary people to read and write.
Hangul is one of the most modern alphabets ever
conceived and consists of 24 letters, including 14
consonants and ten vowels. These letters combine five
double consonants and 11 diphthongs.

The characters divided into two, three, or four clusters to

form syllables and phrases.
It is called Hangeul
in South Korea
and Joseongeul in
North Korea.
Numerous job titles in their polite form, such as
“sajangnim (사장님, president, CEO)”, or “bujangnim” (
부장님, General Manager)” are used to address
others, or kinship and family terms such as “imo” (이
모, ‘mother’s sister’), “hyeong” (형, ‘brother’) and
“eonni” (언니, ‘sister’) are used whenever people feel
close or want to create a sense of intimacy.
• First written poetry
The first form of poetry was discovered during Silla Dynasty (57
BC – 935 AD). However, the form of poetry that best lasted until
nearly the modern days, called sijo, was created during Joseon
Dynasty (1392–1897).
• First Korean novel
The first modern Korean novel was published in 1917. A lot of the
early period of modern Korean literature was influenced by
Western poetry, which was translated into Korean.
The first written historical records, and thus the birth of prose in
Korea, date back to Goryo Dynasty (918–1392). All in all, Korean
literature’s origins can be traced all the way back to Old Stone
Age.
During the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) and the
subsequent Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), the
Korean language underwent further
transformations. Chinese characters, known as
Hanja, played a significant role in shaping Korean
vocabulary and writing.
Many literary works during this period including
classical poetry and historical records, were
written in a combination of Hanja and native
Korean script (Hangul).
The early 20th century brought a challenging
period for the Korean language during Japan's
colonial rule (1910-1945).

The Japanese government attempted to

suppress Korean culture, including the language,
in favor of Japanese assimilation policies.
Despite these challenges, the Korean people
maintained their linguistic identity and actively
resisted linguistic oppression.
After World War II, Korea was divided into
two separate countries: North Korea and
South Korea. The two countries have since
developed their own dialects and variations
of the Korean language.
The language underwent reforms,
simplifications, and the removal of many
Chinese characters from daily use, making
it more accessible to the general population.

This led to the emergence of Modern Korean,

which is the language spoken today.
In contemporary times, Korean has gained
global prominence, largely due to the
cultural influence of K-Pop, Korean cinema,
and technological advancements.

The Korean Wave, or "Hallyu," has led to a

surge in interest in learning Korean
worldwide.
There are six different major Korean
language dialects today.

Each dialect has significant differences

between the alphabet, pronunciation, and
spelling.

South Koreans generally use a hybrid writing
