Lesson Objectives
• Understand the concept of
load-line analysis and how
it is applied to diode
networks.
• Become familiar with the
use of equivalent circuits to
analyze series, parallel,
and series-parallel diode
networks.
• Become familiar with the
analysis of and the range of
applications of diodes

Diode
TYPES
6
General Purpose Diodes
• is a type of semiconductor device that allows
current to flow in only one direction.
7
Zener Diodes
is designed to operate in the reverse breakdown
region, where the voltage across the diode is greater
than the breakdown voltage, also known as the
“Zener voltage”.
8
Schottky diode
low forward voltage drop than ordinary silicon PN
junction diode.
9
Light Emitting Diode (LED)
is a type of semiconductor diode that emits light
when an electric current passes through it.
10
Photodiode
is a semiconductor device that converts light into electrical current.
It operates based on the principle of the photoelectric effect,
where light photons interact with the semiconductor material,
generating electron-hole pairs
11
Tunnel diode
is a semiconductor diode with heavily doped p-type and n-
type materials, resulting in a narrow, highly conductive p-n
junction and a thin depletion region.
12
Gunn diode
is a semiconductor device that exhibits negative
differential resistance due to the Gunn effect.
13
Varactor diode
is a specialized semiconductor diode designed to take
advantage of its variable capacitance property in
reverse bias.

How
Diodes are
USED?

Simplest Diode Configuration
• Consider the circuit below
𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑑𝑖𝑜𝑑𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝐹𝑂𝑅𝑊𝐴𝑅𝐷
+𝐸 − 𝑉! − 𝑉" = 0
16
𝐸 = 𝑉! + 𝑉" → 𝑉 = 𝐼𝑅
𝐸 = 𝑉! + 𝐼! ×𝑅
