Test - English Y7 (4)
Section A: Reading
Read the following article about zoos, then answer the questions.
Zoos have been around for centuries, offering people a chance to see animals they
might never encounter in the wild. While many people enjoy visiting zoos, others argue
that keeping animals in captivity is unfair.
One of the biggest advantages of zoos is that they help protect endangered species.
Some animals are at risk of becoming extinct due to habitat destruction, hunting, and
climate change. Zoos provide a safe space for these animals and run breeding
programs to increase their numbers. Many zoos also educate visitors about wildlife and
the importance of conservation.
However, critics argue that zoos cannot provide animals with the same space and
freedom they would have in the wild. Some animals, like lions and elephants, roam
huge areas in their natural habitats, but in zoos, they have limited space. Additionally,
some people believe that zoos should not exist because animals should live freely in
nature, not behind bars.
Despite these concerns, many modern zoos have improved the way they care for
animals. They create larger enclosures that mimic natural habitats and provide animals
with activities to keep them engaged. Some even work to release animals back into the
wild when possible.
