Instruments
Module

This lesson contains information and suggested learning activities in Electrical

Installation and Maintenance particularly the fundamental knowledge in
Selecting Electrical Measuring Tools and Instruments according to job
specifications.

What’s In

Welcome to the world of Electrical Installation and Maintenance! In this lesson,

you are guided in the selection of electrical measuring tools and instruments
according to job specifications.

As we have already discussed common electrical tools and materials in module

1, this lesson also covers electrical tools and instruments but focuses on tools
used for measuring different properties related to electricity.

You are then required to read, understand and internalize the different electrical
measuring tools and instruments and their function/purpose so that at the end of
the lesson, you may able to grasp the importance of these electrical measuring
tools and instruments and be able to safely perform basic tasks according to job
requirements.

5
Notes to the Student
Upon completing this lesson, report your achievement
to your teacher for assessment of the knowledge and
skills acquired in this activity. If you pass the
assessment, you can proceed to the next module.

What’s New

Measurement is the process or the result of determining the ratio of a physical

quantity such as length, time, temperature, etc., to a unit of measurement, such
as meter, second or degree Celsius. The science of measurement is called
metrology. The English word measurement originates from the Latin word
mensura and the verb meters through the Middle French measure.

Electrical measuring tools and instruments are sensitive and delicate and need
extra care when handling them.

What is It

6
Lesson 1 Select Electrical Measuring Tools and
Instruments

Measurement is important to know the electrical measuring unit in any electrical

work or project. It is the act of comparing an unknown quantity unit from a
standard unit of the electrical device.

This topic covers the common electrical measuring tools and instruments along
with their purpose or function. Illustrations are provided to help you familiarize
yourself with them. Always observe safety in handling or manipulating any tools
to ensure a safe workplace and avoid accidents. The following are the most
common electrical measuring tools and instruments that you may encounter in
the electrical installation and maintenance exploratory course.

ELECTRICAL MEASURING TOOLS / INSTRUMENT ILLUSTRATION

1. Test Light – a pocket-size tool with a neon bulb
connected to wire leads and prongs at the end, it is
used to test the presence of current in a wire or
circuit.
2. Continuity Tester – an electrical measuring
device that is powered by batteries with a bulb
connected to a probe at one end and a cord with
either an alligator clip or another probe at the
other end. When the two ends get in contact with
each other, the circuit will be completed, and the
bulb will be lighted which indicates a continuous
path for current to flow.
3. Wire Gauge – is an electrical measuring tool used
to identify wire diameter. It is important to know
the wire diameter to determine the current
capacity, electrical resistance, and weight of a
wire.

4. Micrometer – is classified as a precision

instrument due to its highly accurate
measurement. It is used in electrical installation for
determining the diameter of wires to be used.

5. Ruler / Foot Rule – a rigid measuring tool, one

foot in length which is commonly used for
technical drawings, measuring lengths or
distances, or drawing straight lines. An unmarked

7
rule is called a straight edge.
6. Pull-Push Rule – a type of measuring tool used to
determine the length or height of an object in
inches or centimeters. It is typically made of rolled
thin flexible metal enclosed in a compact plastic
casing with a coil at the center.
7. Volt-Ohm-Milliammeter (VOM) – also known as
multitester/multimeter is an electrical/electronic
measuring instrument that combines several
measuring instruments in one unit. (Ammeter for
Amperage, Voltmeter for Voltage, and Ohmmeter
for Resistance) It can also be used as a continuity
tester.

There are two general classifications of VOMs:

a. Analog VOM / Analog Multimeter /

Multitester – it uses a mechanical pointer that
moves on a scale to determine electrical
measurements.

b. Digital VOM / Digital Multimeter / Multitester

– it uses a digital display to show electrical
readings/measurements.

8
After having adequate information about the common electrical measuring tools
and instruments, basic manipulation of electrical measuring tools and
instruments is the next step to enhance your acquired knowledge. The following
are some of the procedures in the basic manipulation of electrical measuring
tools and instruments.

Safety Alert: Always remember that your safety is the most important priority. You
may communicate with your teacher or ask your guardian or any capable person if you
are not sure of what you are about to do.

Using Electrical Measuring Tools and

Instruments
1. Continuity Tester – Any object may be
tested to determine if current will flow.
To do so, select any available object at
home and place one of the prongs of the
continuity tester to the other end of the
object (example: ruler, piece of wire,
hairpin, etc.). The other prong should be
connected to the other end of the object.
If the object allows current to flow also
known as an electrical conductor, the bulb in the continuity tester will be
lit. If the continuity tester but does not lit,
it is either the object does not have a
complete path for current to flow or it is
an insulator.

2. Wire Gauge – To use a wire gauge, get a

piece of wire, remove its insulation, and
gently slide the wire conductor in each
opening of the wire gauge. The opening where the conductor fits
flawlessly is the size (diameter) of wire in
AWG (American Wire Gauge) which is
indicated in the wire gauge itself.

3. Ruler / Foot Rule – The most common

measuring tool that you can find at home
is your typical ruler. In measuring
distances such as height, width, or
length, make sure to start measuring at
zero “0” scale either from centimeter or
inches in your ruler. The scale where your object ends will be its
measurement. In the example below, the length of the pen is 14 cm.
