ACOUSTICS 3

The document covers key concepts in acoustics, including the application of logarithms, decibel calculations, and sound intensity levels. It discusses the threshold of pain, auditory fatigue, and hearing loss, while providing problem-solving examples related to sound intensity. Additionally, it outlines an assignment on various acoustic phenomena and includes lecture sources for further study.

Application of LOGARITHMS
Logarithms are applied when numbers are too long for an equation, we
need a simplified base number, commonly used is 10.

ADDING DECIBELS

- difference between two sounds is between 0 and 1dB,

add 3dB to the higher decibel level.
-difference is between 2 and 3 you add 2dB to the higher level.
- difference is between 4 and 9 you add 1dB.
-above 10dB difference adds nothing to the higher level.

EXAMPLES:
50 + 30DB = 50DB OF PERCEIVED SOUND
50 + 50DB = 53DB OF PERCEIVED SOUND
ASSIGNMENT ( TO BE SUBMITTED TODAY)
1. Doppler Effect
2. Echo
3. Resonance
4. Attenuation
5. Flutter

based on the definition gathered
Use proper citation
THRESHOLD OF PAIN
The level of sound intensity high enough to produce
the sensation of pain in the human ear, usually
around 130 dB.
AUDITORY FATIGUE
Physical or mental weariness caused by prolonged
exposure to loud noises.
HEARING LOSS
An increase in the threshold of audibility, at specific
frequencies, caused by normal aging, disease, or
injury to the hearing organs.
THRESHOLD OF HEARING
The minimum sound pressure capable of stimulating
an auditory sensation, usually 20 micropascals or
zero dB.
DECIBELS
A unit for expressing the relative pressure or
intensity of sounds on a uniform scale from 0
for the least perceptible sound to about 130 for
the average threshold of pain, Abbr,: dB

The decibel scale is a logarithmic scale

applicable to any parameter.

0dB is roughly the lowest level a normal

person can hear, but it is not the lowest level
possible.
SOUND POWER
The amount of acoustic energy radiated by a
source per unit time, expressed in watts.

How much sound is it capable of producing?

SOUND PRESSURE
The difference between the actual pressure at
any point in the field of a sound wave and the
static pressure at that point, expressed in
pascals.

How is the sound affecting us?

SOUND INTENSITY
The rate at which acoustic energy flows
through a medium, expressed in watts per
sqm.

The power it radiates or flow in an area.
