The lab report investigates the effects of organic and chemical fertilizers on plant growth, with the hypothesis that organic fertilizer would yield taller plants. The results showed that chemical fertilizer was more effective, contradicting the hypothesis, as it provided essential nutrients for growth. Suggestions for improvement include using different soil types and seeds, and the experiment's real-world application highlights its relevance for farmers in selecting fertilizers.

Practice Writing a Lab Report

Title:
Effects of organic and chemical fertilizers on plant growth

Objective(s):
To test the effects of different fertilizers on the growth of plant

Hypothesis:
John predicted that the organic fertilizer would make the plants grow taller than chemical
fertilizers.

Variables:
● Independent Variable:the different types of fertilizers
● Dependent Variable:the growth or height of the plants
● Controlled Variable: type of seed, pots, soil, water and ruler

Materials:
● three pots
● three of the same type of seed
● soil
● organic fertilizer
● chemical fertilizer
● water
● ruler

Procedures:

Data and Observations:

Height of Plant
Days No fertilizer Chemical Organic
(cm) Fertilizer (cm) Fertilizer (cm)
1 0 0 0
2 0 0 0
3 0 0 0
4 0 0 0
5 0 0.5 0
6 0 1.3 0
7 0 1.9 0.3
8 0 2.2 1.6
9 0 4.5 3.2
10 0.2 5.2 3.8

Conclusion:
For this lab,John’s hypothesis was incorrect.Because he predict the plant with organic fertilizer
would grow taller than the the chemical fertilizer.Using that data in the table, chemical fertilizer
work the best. This is because chemical fertilizer contains essential nutrients for the plant and
increases the growth rate of the plant. In other hand, organic fertilizer tends to grow more slowly
due to lack of plant nutrients. The one with no fertilizer did not grow well. This is because no
fertilizer takes longer to get the nutrients needed for plants to grow.

Questions:
1. How would you improve this experiment?
We can improve this experiment by using different types of soil for each fertilizer or by
trying different types of seeds instead of using just one type of seed.
2. As a real-world application, how can this experiment be beneficial?
As a real-world application, this experiment can be beneficial in the process by which a
farmer would grow their plants. It can be used in the selection of fertilizers to support the
growth of healthy plants.

Comment:

A good written lab report for John. You understand each step of the scientific
method. You write a clear title and the objective for the experiment. You are able
to describe what are three variables in the experiment. But in relation to the
hypothesis , you should put more information about why John might make this
prediction.
