HISTORY OF BASKETBALL
MARIANO MARCOS STATE UNIVERSITY
College of Teacher Education

1891 - Basketball was invented by James Naismith, a Canadian teacher, in 1891 at a YMCA
school in Springfield, Massachusetts. The first ball used was a soccer ball played by nine
players, and the goals were wooden peach baskets affixed to the walls.

1894 - The soccer ball that was previously being used in games was replaced with what we
now know as the official basketball. By 1897-1898, teams of five became standard.

1936 - Basketball made its debut as an official Olympic sport at the Berlin Summer
Olympics. The United States won the gold medal, beginning a legacy of dominance in
international basketball.

1949 - In 1949 two subsequent professional leagues, the (NBL) National Basketball League
(formed in 1937) and the (BAA) Basketball Association of America (1946) merged to create
the National Basketball Association (NBA).

1. Players
There can be a total of 12 players on the team roster, but only five can play at a time.
These players are typically designated by positions such as point guard, shooting
guard, small forward, power forward, and center.

2. Scoring
Objectives of basketball is to score more points than your opponents by shooting the
ball into the basket.

Here is how the basketball scoring system works:

• 3 Points: A team is given three points if a player puts the basketball
through the hoop from behind the three-point line.
• 2 points: A player gets two points if he shoots the ball through the hoop
when he is inside the three-point line.
• 1 point: If a player scores a basket in a foul shot, the team gets 1 point.

3. Duration of the Game

 NBA games consist of four quarters, each lasting 12 minutes.
 FIBA and NCAA games also consist of four quarters, but each quarter lasts 10
minutes.
 Overtime periods, if necessary, are each 5 minutes long.

4. Shot Clock
 In standard FIBA basketball play, the shot clock is set to 24 seconds. Teams have this
amount of time to attempt a shot that hits the rim.
 In basketball, an "8-second violation" typically refers to a specific rule regarding the
time a team has to advance the ball past the half-court line.
 14-Second Shot Clock After Offensive Rebound:
-When an offensive team secures an offensive rebound (grabs the ball after a
missed shot) In this scenario, the shot clock resets to 14 seconds instead of the
full 24 seconds.

5. Violations
 TRAVELLING
-Refers to a violation that occurs when a player holding the ball moves one or
both of their feet illegally.
 BACKCOURT VIOLATION
-If a team violates the backcourt rule, it results in a turnover, and the opposing
team is awarded possession of the ball.

6. Fouls
