Week2

The document outlines a week's lesson plan for Year 6 on the topic of metamorphic rocks, including definitions, types, and formation processes. Key concepts include the role of heat and pressure in transforming existing rocks, with examples such as marble, slate, and gneiss. The document also emphasizes hands-on learning and reflection on the rock cycle and its processes.

Value of the week

• TOPIC: Metamorphic Rocks

• LO: To Define metamorphic rocks and Explain

the role of heat and pressure.

• KW: burial, mass, gneiss, metamorphic rocks

What are Metamorphic Rocks?
• Metamorphic
rocks are rocks
that have changed
due to heat,
pressure, or both.
• This process alters
the minerals,
creating new
crystals and
textures. Examples
include marble
and slate.
What Causes Heat and Pressure?
• Heat from magma
and pressure from
overlying rocks
change sedimentary
and igneous rocks
into metamorphic
rocks.
• This occurs deep
within the Earth's
crust.
Types of Metamorphic Rock:
Quartzite
• Quartzite forms when sandstone is heated.
• It is hard and durable, often used in sculptures
and construction.
Types of Metamorphic Rock:
Marble
• Marble forms when limestone is heated. It is
shiny and comes in various colors. Used for
statues and buildings.
Types of Metamorphic Rock: Slate
• Slate forms when shale is put under intense
pressure. It has layers and is used for roofing
and flooring.
Types of Metamorphic Rock:
Gneiss
• Gneiss forms when granite is subjected to
heat and pressure. It has a banded
appearance and is very hard.
Characteristics of Metamorphic
Rocks
• Metamorphic rocks are shiny and sometimes
layered.
• They are harder than sedimentary rocks and
can be fine- or coarse-grained.
How Metamorphic Rocks Form
• Metamorphic rocks form when existing rocks
are subjected to intense heat and pressure,
altering their composition and texture.
The Rock Cycle: Overview
• The rock cycle demonstrates how rocks
transform from one type to another over
millions of years.
The Rock Cycle: Key Processes
• Processes in the rock cycle include melting,
cooling, weathering, erosion, sedimentation,
and metamorphism.
Using a Model to Understand the
Rock Cycle
• Models help visualize how rocks change over
time and the processes involved in the rock
cycle.
Think Like a Scientist: Observing
Rocks
• Scientists observe rocks in their environment
to identify their types and uses, promoting
hands-on learning.
Reflection: What Have You
Learned?
• Metamorphic rocks illustrate Earth's dynamic
processes. Key learning: understanding rock
transformation and their uses.
