Activity 3

Deep dive into Systems

Objective: Understand the basic structure and functioning of Tank aquaculture.

A tank-based aquaculture system is a controlled environment used for rearing aquatic

organisms in specially designed tanks. These systems can be operated indoors or outdoors
and are often used for freshwater and marine species. Tanks can be made from fiberglass,
concrete, polyethylene, or other durable materials.
This system typically includes:
Water Supply and Filtration: Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) or flow-through
systems.
Aeration and Oxygenation: Ensures sufficient dissolved oxygen for fish health.
Temperature Control: Heaters or chillers to maintain optimal conditions.
Waste Management: Biofilters, sedimentation tanks, and mechanical filtration to remove
waste.

Materials:
• Circular Tank
• Sand, soil, and small rocks
• Aquatic plants (real or artificial)
• Aquaculture species
• Water-testing kits (to measure pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen)

Instructions:

1. Set Up:
o Fill the tank with water and add sand, soil, and rocks to simulate the bottom
of a pond.
o Add aquatic plants to mimic natural vegetation.
2. Measure and Observe:
o Test the water parameters using the kit.
o Discuss the importance of maintaining water quality in tank aquaculture.
3. Explore Feeding and Growth:
o Drop small food particles into the "Tank" and discuss the importance of
feeding schedules and waste management.

Discussion Points:

1. Remembering (Recall Facts & Basic Concepts)

• What is a tank-based aquaculture system, and how does it function?
• What species are commonly cultured in a tank-based system?
• What are the key components of a tank-based aquaculture setup?

2. Understanding (Explain Concepts & Ideas)

• How does a tank-based aquaculture system differ from other aquaculture systems like
ponds or cages?
• Why is water quality management critical in a tank-based aquaculture system?
• What are the advantages and disadvantages of using tanks for aquaculture?

3. Applying (Use Information in New Situations)

• If you were to set up a small-scale tank-based aquaculture system, what steps would
you take to ensure sustainability?
• How would you design a feeding schedule for a species of your choice in a tank
system?
• What measures can you implement to minimize waste and improve efficiency in a
tank-based system?

4. Analyzing (Examine and Break Down Information)

• What are the economic and environmental trade-offs of using a tank-based system
compared to traditional aquaculture methods?
• How do different species respond to varying water conditions in a tank system?
• What potential risks and challenges arise from intensive aquaculture in tanks?

5. Evaluating (Justify a Stand or Decision)

• Is tank-based aquaculture a sustainable alternative to wild fishing? Why or why not?
• How effective are recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) in addressing
environmental concerns?
• What are the long-term economic benefits of investing in a tank-based aquaculture
system?

6. Creating (Develop New Ideas or Propose Solutions)

• Design an ideal tank-based aquaculture system for a specific species, considering cost,
sustainability, and efficiency.
• Propose innovative strategies to improve oxygenation and waste management in tank
systems.
• If you were to develop a new policy for sustainable aquaculture, how would you
incorporate tank-based systems into it?
