Your Final Submission
Being kind, empathetic, flexible, well-organized, and patient are characteristics that make a good
teacher. Kindness helps build a strong relationship between teacher and student for a better learning
experience. Empathy is important in making the students feel understood and heard when they’re
struggling. Flexibility helps a teacher be ready for anything that might be thrown at them. Being well-
organized is important to effectively teach a new language. Finally patience is a necessary
characteristic for a teacher as they must be calm and collected when students can’t grasp a concept,
are misbehaving, being stuck on the same lesson for longer than anticipated, etc.
Lead in:
Teacher asks students to raise their hand to describe what they’re doing at the time of the lesson,
then teacher points to a bird flying outside and asks students what the bird is doing (write all
responses on the board).
Presentation:
Teacher shows two photos and writes their description “She is playing” and “They are playing”.
Teacher elicits from students how both events are currently happening, and how the conjugation of
the verb ‘to be’ changes between singular and plural based on the pronouns. Teacher repeats the
example with another photo, then prompts students with new photos to try for themselves. Practice
pronouncing all together as a class. Emphasize how the pronoun determines the verb conjugation
and that the events can be current and continue into the near future.
Practice:
Teacher shows an image with lots going on in it, and describes something in the present continuous
form going on in the photo. Students are paired/split into groups and asked to continue identifying
things going on in the photo and writing them down together in the present continuous form. Have
all groups present their findings and correct them all together, again highlighting that all the events
are presently taking place and may continue into the near future.
Production:
In pairs/groups, students are prompted by the teacher to discuss among themselves things currently
going on in the classroom, home life, world, etc., that interests them. They then will describe specific
actions with the present continuous form.

Tutor Feedback
It’s good to see you starting the assignments Hailey! I hope you are enjoying the course so far.
1. Good points, and encourage the sts to take responsibility for their own learning to encourage
independent learning. It’s also useful to bear in mind that you will be teaching sts from diverse
backgrounds and ages - so think about how to apply your listed characteristics to these differences.
2. Good work, this is a really well-structured lesson. It’s also important to compare meaning to this
with present simple, which is a tense they already know. The present simple tense is used for
routines and habits: i.e. I eat breakfast every day at 8 am. The present continuous is for actions
happening now; i.e. I am eating (now). You could elicit this from sts (so you know they understand)
discussing these example sentences in pairs. That would provide max sts interaction, and get them
discovering meaning for themselves. and the form is to be + present participle.
Just be careful with the lead-in - we can't use the TL there as sts won't know it yet.
Here’s another idea for a lesson plan:
Lead-in
Ask sts to tell you things they do every day - eg eat lunch, walk to school, drink water, etc. Write verbs
on the board in present simple.
Presentation
Point to verb "eat" - say "I eat everyday". Then mime eating - "So right now, I am eating". Point to walk
- mime walking around - elicit from sts "Now I am....?" Sts should say "walking" - help if necessary.
Point to verb "drink - get sts to mime drinking and elicit "I am drinking". Elicit a few more by miming
verbs like writing, jumping, throwing etc. Drill pronunciation.
Write two sentences on the board: I eat every day / I am eating now. Elicit the difference in meaning
(one is for habits and routines, the other is happening right now) and the form - to be + present
participle.
Practice
Gap fill exercise – sts have to fill in the blank using the correct form of the verbs – eg he ______
(walk).
Production
Sts in pairs – give each pair a picture that contains lots of different activities – they have to describe
to each other what is happening – he is riding a bike, they are feeding the birds etc.
Or get sts to talk to each other about what friends/family are doing right now using the TL – eg my
mum is working, my friend is swimming etc.
Keep up the good work!
Alex

When teaching grammar, you teach meaning and pronunciation

before form.
Select the correct answer from these options
1. true
2. false
You selected.
true
Result.

Correct
Yes, that's correct. It’s important you cover meaning and pronunciation first. You can’t teach the
meaning through the spelling or written form and it can make it hard for students to master the
pronunciation if they do the form first. That’s why the PPP method works so well here.

Tutor Feedback
1.
Good work. And how about this one:
I would give each student an empty template of a diary of “last week”.
I would show them an example of it filled in. e.g. doctors at 9 am on Thursday.
I would give them a few minutes to fill their own in-remember it’s for last week - so it’s past. I would
then put them into pairs. They would swap diary templates.
They would have to form past simple sentences from their partner’s diary, telling them what they
“did” on particular days. e.g. Wednesday at midday you went to the cinema with Alan.
I would then ask some students to give me examples, writing them on the board correctly.
2.
OK, good work again! Here is another one for your bank of activities:
The teacher sticks a picture of a genie on the board tells the students that s/he can make the
people’s wishes come true. Then remind them that s/he is not real. The students should work in
pairs and tell each other what they would do if they saw a genie. For instance: If I saw a genie, I
would ask for a castle, I would travel the world etc.
Keep up the good work.

Ask everyone's favourite song.
Split into groups and assign each a different word from the song (note, ain't, litigate), and ask
students to find synonyms for the words and then share findings. Give examples of these
words in context ie: she sings in a very high note.
Share the song name and play the acoustic version. In pairs, have students predict what the
song may be about and words they may hear, then share predictions with the class.
Ask: How does this song make you feel? - concept check the understanding of the question by
having them explain it to me.
Play the song's first half twice and then share answers to the above questions together.
Ask: What is the singer trying to tell listeners? - concept check their understanding again.
Play the first half of the song twice more and then in pairs, have them share their answers
before sharing with the class.
In groups have students read the lyrics to the second half of the song and discuss what they
think of it. Later discuss what they think all together as a class.

Unit 8: Introduction to phonology
Voiced or Unvoiced consonants: Quiz
Description
Using what you’ve learned in the last lesson about voiced and unvoiced consonants, we are going to
give you 10 consonant sounds and ask you to decide whether they are voiced or unvoiced.

Remember to use the method that we taught you: place your finger on your throat and say
the sound. If you feel a vibration, the sound is voiced; if you don’t feel a vibration, the sound is
unvoiced. Be careful to say just the sound itself, not any sounds that might come before or
after it, as this may change your answer.

Here are two examples for you:

Unit 9: Assignment
Description
For this written assignment, you will be given two tasks where you have to design a "presentation"
stage activity for a lesson for young learners.
Each task will have different target language, and will not be connected, but in each you should
remember to teach the meaning, pronunciation and form of the TL.
You should also write a few examples of the sentences you think students would use. This is key for
your tutor to see that you understand the language needed.
For this assignment you have 2 tasks. Please make sure you answer both before you submit. Your
tutor cannot mark your work unless you submit both at the same time.

Written assignment
This is a written assignment that you will need to complete online in the text box provided.
Please pay attention to the following instructions:
Pay attention to the word count provided - if your answer is 10% over or under the
word count you may be asked to redo the assignment. Try writing in note form or
using bullet points to display your information for best results.
You may compose your answer in a word processor and then copy that answer and
paste it in the online text box. Please ensure that the answer is formatted correctly if
you choose this method.
Please ensure that you complete both tasks before submitting the assignment for
marking.

Your Submissions
Below are any previously marked submissions and feedback for this assignment
You submitted on 08/11/2023 :
Task 1:
Put photos of food on the board, ask students how they feel about the foods
Ask the students what different synonyms are for like/don’t like and write them on the board. (ie:
enjoy, hate)
Pronouncing together and emphasizing syllables with clapping as a group, practice phrases such as
"I like chocolate" or "I don't like running".
Write the phonemic spelling of TL next to the word's actual spelling
Task 2:
Show a video clip of someone taking a pencil from someone else without asking, then ask the
students what the person in the video should’ve done instead of just taking the pencil.
Ask students what it means to take something with the intention of giving it back later.
Elicit the question “Can I borrow a pencil?”
Verbally practicing the pronunciation as a group through phrases such as "Can I borrow your ruler"
Write the phrase on the board alongside the phonemic spelling of the sentence

Tutor Feedback
Hi Hailey,
This is good but how would you teach the meaning of like/dislike visually - you need to get them to
understand these words before you can introduce the other vocab.
Task 2 is fine - well done.
Thanks, Alex

Tutor Feedback
This is good work, well done. You provide plenty of visuals and gestures which teach the meaning of
the TL here. In TEFL terms, we call body language “Paralinguistics”. Remember though that gestures
in your culture may mean something else in another culture. Here are a couple of nice readings on
that:

Your Submissions
Below are any previously marked submissions and feedback for this assignment
You submitted on 09/11/2023 :
Lead-in (S-S/PW & S-T, 5 minutes): Place images of people playing sports on the board and ask the
students in pairs to describe what they see. Come together and share their descriptions of the
images.
Presentation (S-S/PW & T-S, 20 minutes): Write two phrases relating to one of the images on the
board: “1) She skated yesterday” and “2) She was skating yesterday.” In pairs have the students
discuss the differences between the two sentences. Come together as a class and elicit the
differences from the students. Review the differences and meanings of the simple past tense
“describing an action/event that is no longer happening” and the past continuous tense means “A
past action/event taking place at a particular time over a period of time”. Follow by writing the
sentence structure of the TL and an example on the board: Past continuous, “past tense of the verb
‘to be’ (was/were) + present participle ending in -ing”. (Ie: She was walking last week). Drill the
sentence form of past continuous a few times with practice phrases (ie: They were swimming
yesterday) practicing proper pronunciation and sentence form. Use a timeline and have students
place where present continuous and past continuous would fall. Write on the board an example of
past continuous interrupted “When she called, he was swimming.” Ask students about similarities
they see between past simple, past continuous, and the new sentence. Elicit and review the
similarities/differences, then what this new sentence form is called and what it means “A past
action/event that was in progress when another action/event interrupted it.” Write the sentence
structure on the board “action that is interrupted (past continuous) + action that interrupts (past
simple). Drill this form a few times with practice sentences to emphasize the form and concept
check with questions. Ie: when using the past continuous form, are we talking about an ongoing
event/activity/action? (no). Ie: Is the past continuous used to describe a past event that happened
over a period of time? (yes). Ie: Is the form used to describe simultaneous past
events/actions/activities? (yes).
Practice (S-S/PW & T-S, 20 minutes): Give students a fill-in-the-blank worksheet and have them work
in pairs. Ask them to also indicate what verb/sentence form each sentence is. Ie: “They were walking
home when the car stopped to offer them a ride.” – past continuous interrupted. Ie: “She was running
last evening.” Correct the worksheet together as a class, emphasizing the differences in the forms
again.
Homework (T-S, 3 minutes): Assign students a comic strip and ask them at home to describe what
they see in the images using the past continuous and past continuous interupted sentence forms.

Tutor Feedback

Tutor Feedback
This is a really good plan, well done. I really like how you make the presentation interactive and you
provide dynamic practice activities.
Here is another idea for a lesson plan:
Lead-in - Teacher places scenes from films around the room and ask students in pairs to name the
film/genre and think of what is happening in the scene. Ask students for feedback. (5mins)

Presentation – Ask sts when they last watched a film – eg I watched a film last night. Draw a
timeline on the board and get the sts to mark “last night” on it. Ask sts at what time they watched the
film – when it started and when it finished. Ask sts to mark on this on the timeline – elicit the past
continuous….So if the film started at 6pm and finished at 8pm…you were watching the film at 7pm.
Elicit that we use past continuous to talk about an action that took place over an amount of time in
the past.
Now ask the sts if they were interrupted whilst watching the film – eg did they need to get a drink, or
did the phone ring? Take an example from sts and ask them where on the timeline this action
happened. Ask sts to say the two sentences – I was watching a film at 7pm….the phone rang at 7:30.
Now elicit how to combine the two sentences – I was watching the film when the phone rang.
Elicit a few more examples from sts and write these on the board. Drill pronunciation and then elicit
the form and write it on the board: was/were + present participle + when + past simple.
Concept questions: Do we know which action happens first? (Yes). Does the second action interrupt
the first action? (Yes) Do both actions happen for the same amount of time? (No)
Practice (Controlled) - Teacher tells students they are going to watch a film trailer. Teacher gives
students gap-fill worksheets with infinitive words e.g. 'He ______ (open) the box when Dracula ______
(knock) it from his hand'.
Production (Free) - Ask students to form groups of 3. Talk about scary films and cliff hangers and
what could happen in a short scene "Tom was washing the dishes when someone rang the doorbell.
He wasn’t expecting a guest...". Ask students to either use a movie example from the lead-in or think
of their own scene/film and make up some scenarios for characters in the scene using the TL.
Students then perform the scene to the class.
Homework – Sts write a description a scene from their favourite film using the TL – eg James Bond
was running through the airport when the car appeared.
Thanks for all your hard work on the methodology course.
Please remember to do the feedback which you will see on https://courses.tefl.org/login

It’s at the bottom of the relevant course title.
