Your Final Submission
Being kind, empathetic, flexible, well-organized, and patient are characteristics that make a good
teacher. Kindness helps build a strong relationship between teacher and student for a better learning
experience. Empathy is important in making the students feel understood and heard when they’re
struggling. Flexibility helps a teacher be ready for anything that might be thrown at them. Being well-
organized is important to effectively teach a new language. Finally patience is a necessary
characteristic for a teacher as they must be calm and collected when students can’t grasp a concept,
are misbehaving, being stuck on the same lesson for longer than anticipated, etc.
Lead in:
Teacher asks students to raise their hand to describe what they’re doing at the time of the lesson,
then teacher points to a bird flying outside and asks students what the bird is doing (write all
responses on the board).
Presentation:
Teacher shows two photos and writes their description “She is playing” and “They are playing”.
Teacher elicits from students how both events are currently happening, and how the conjugation of
the verb ‘to be’ changes between singular and plural based on the pronouns. Teacher repeats the
example with another photo, then prompts students with new photos to try for themselves. Practice
pronouncing all together as a class. Emphasize how the pronoun determines the verb conjugation
and that the events can be current and continue into the near future.
Practice:
Teacher shows an image with lots going on in it, and describes something in the present continuous
form going on in the photo. Students are paired/split into groups and asked to continue identifying
things going on in the photo and writing them down together in the present continuous form. Have
all groups present their findings and correct them all together, again highlighting that all the events
are presently taking place and may continue into the near future.
Production:
In pairs/groups, students are prompted by the teacher to discuss among themselves things currently
going on in the classroom, home life, world, etc., that interests them. They then will describe specific
actions with the present continuous form.

Tutor Feedback
It’s good to see you starting the assignments Hailey! I hope you are enjoying the course so far.
1. Good points, and encourage the sts to take responsibility for their own learning to encourage
independent learning. It’s also useful to bear in mind that you will be teaching sts from diverse
backgrounds and ages - so think about how to apply your listed characteristics to these differences.
2. Good work, this is a really well-structured lesson. It’s also important to compare meaning to this
with present simple, which is a tense they already know. The present simple tense is used for
routines and habits: i.e. I eat breakfast every day at 8 am. The present continuous is for actions
happening now; i.e. I am eating (now). You could elicit this from sts (so you know they understand)
discussing these example sentences in pairs. That would provide max sts interaction, and get them
discovering meaning for themselves. and the form is to be + present participle.
Just be careful with the lead-in - we can't use the TL there as sts won't know it yet.
Here’s another idea for a lesson plan:
Lead-in
Ask sts to tell you things they do every day - eg eat lunch, walk to school, drink water, etc. Write verbs
on the board in present simple.
Presentation
Point to verb "eat" - say "I eat everyday". Then mime eating - "So right now, I am eating". Point to walk
- mime walking around - elicit from sts "Now I am....?" Sts should say "walking" - help if necessary.
Point to verb "drink - get sts to mime drinking and elicit "I am drinking". Elicit a few more by miming
verbs like writing, jumping, throwing etc. Drill pronunciation.
Write two sentences on the board: I eat every day / I am eating now. Elicit the difference in meaning
(one is for habits and routines, the other is happening right now) and the form - to be + present
participle.
Practice
Gap fill exercise – sts have to fill in the blank using the correct form of the verbs – eg he ______
(walk).
Production
Sts in pairs – give each pair a picture that contains lots of different activities – they have to describe
to each other what is happening – he is riding a bike, they are feeding the birds etc.
Or get sts to talk to each other about what friends/family are doing right now using the TL – eg my
mum is working, my friend is swimming etc.
Keep up the good work!

Correct
Yes, that's correct. It’s important you cover meaning and pronunciation first. You can’t teach the
meaning through the spelling or written form and it can make it hard for students to master the
pronunciation if they do the form first. That’s why the PPP method works so well here.

Tutor Feedback
1.
Good work. And how about this one:
I would give each student an empty template of a diary of “last week”.
I would show them an example of it filled in. e.g. doctors at 9 am on Thursday.
I would give them a few minutes to fill their own in-remember it’s for last week - so it’s past. I would
then put them into pairs. They would swap diary templates.
They would have to form past simple sentences from their partner’s diary, telling them what they
“did” on particular days. e.g. Wednesday at midday you went to the cinema with Alan.
I would then ask some students to give me examples, writing them on the board correctly.
2.
OK, good work again! Here is another one for your bank of activities:
The teacher sticks a picture of a genie on the board tells the students that s/he can make the
people’s wishes come true. Then remind them that s/he is not real. The students should work in
pairs and tell each other what they would do if they saw a genie. For instance: If I saw a genie, I
would ask for a castle, I would travel the world etc.
Keep up the good work.

This is good work, well done. You provide plenty of visuals and gestures which teach the meaning of
the TL here. In TEFL terms, we call body language “Paralinguistics”. Remember though that gestures
in your culture may mean something else in another culture. Here are a couple of nice readings on
that:

Tutor Feedback
Good work Hailey. Can you add a production stage and task and I can grade.
Thanks, Alex

Presentation – Ask sts when they last watched a film – eg I watched a film last night. Draw a
timeline on the board and get the sts to mark “last night” on it. Ask sts at what time they watched the
film – when it started and when it finished. Ask sts to mark on this on the timeline – elicit the past
continuous….So if the film started at 6pm and finished at 8pm…you were watching the film at 7pm.
Elicit that we use past continuous to talk about an action that took place over an amount of time in
the past.
Now ask the sts if they were interrupted whilst watching the film – eg did they need to get a drink, or
did the phone ring? Take an example from sts and ask them where on the timeline this action
happened. Ask sts to say the two sentences – I was watching a film at 7pm….the phone rang at 7:30.
Now elicit how to combine the two sentences – I was watching the film when the phone rang.
Elicit a few more examples from sts and write these on the board. Drill pronunciation and then elicit
the form and write it on the board: was/were + present participle + when + past simple.
Concept questions: Do we know which action happens first? (Yes). Does the second action interrupt
the first action? (Yes) Do both actions happen for the same amount of time? (No)
Practice (Controlled) - Teacher tells students they are going to watch a film trailer. Teacher gives
students gap-fill worksheets with infinitive words e.g. 'He ______ (open) the box when Dracula ______
(knock) it from his hand'.
Production (Free) - Ask students to form groups of 3. Talk about scary films and cliff hangers and
what could happen in a short scene "Tom was washing the dishes when someone rang the doorbell.
He wasn’t expecting a guest...". Ask students to either use a movie example from the lead-in or think
of their own scene/film and make up some scenarios for characters in the scene using the TL.
Students then perform the scene to the class.
Homework – Sts write a description a scene from their favourite film using the TL – eg James Bond
was running through the airport when the car appeared.
Thanks for all your hard work on the methodology course.
