Tiktok

TikTok is a social media platform that allows users to create, share, and discover short-form
videos. Originating in China under the name Douyin, it is the brainchild of ByteDance, a
Beijing-based technology company. The platform burst onto the international stage in 2016,
revolutionizing how the world consumes and creates digital content. TikTok's short-form
videos cover comedy, dance, and education genres. Users typically create videos ranging
from 15 to 60 seconds, enhancing them with elements from a vast library of music and filter
effects. Zhang Yiming is a Chinese Internet entrepreneur. He founded ByteDance in 2012 and
developed the news aggregator Toutiao and the video-sharing platform Douyin
(internationally known as TikTok). Zhang is among the richest individuals in the world, with
an estimated net worth of US$45.6 billion as of October 2024, according to Forbes, and
US$43.1 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. On 4 November 2021, Zhang
stepped down as CEO of ByteDance, completing a leadership handover announced in May
2021. According to Reuters, Zhang maintains over 50 percent of ByteDance's voting rights.
The surging global popularity of TikTok made Zhang the richest man in China in 2024.

TikTok is a social media platform for creating, sharing, and discovering short videos. The app
is used by young people as an outlet to express themselves through singing, dancing, comedy,
and lip-syncing, and allows users to create videos and share them across a community.
TikTok is a fun app that allows teens to create and share videos with their friends. Since the
early days of social media (in particular on YouTube,) lip-syncing videos have proved a
popular form of user-generated content among teens. The popularity of TV shows such as Lip
Sync Battle has also helped drive interest in this type of platform. Teens also enjoy competing
in the different challenges that can be entered via the trending hashtags on the app. The app
has a very dedicated, young community of users. For many of these users, gaining likes, and
followers and getting their videos featured on the app are important priorities. Creating and
sharing their content is now a big part of how teens spend their time online. Teens are moving
away from being spectators online to becoming content creators. This app can be a creative
way, fun way for teens to express themselves and create their social content.
Like most other apps and social networks, users can follow other users, and like and comment
on other users’ videos. Teens can send emojis to their favorite singer on TikTok. Users can
select the song they wish to use in their video first, then record themselves miming along to
the music. Alternatively, users can record their video first and then select a song, and/or add a
voiceover. The app has lots of ways to add more fun to users’ videos, for example, there are
options to shoot in slow-mo, time-lapse, fast-forward, filters, effects, or even play the song
backward, etc. Once users are happy with their video, they can post it to their followers and
share it on other social networks for example; Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc. There is
also a duet feature which allows you to connect with another user. The search tool allows
users to view other videos. Users can also view content under the trending hashtags on the
‘For You’ page. Trending hashtags allow users to view content that is currently popular, and
contribute their video to that trend using the same hashtag. TikTok sometimes promotes
themed challenges, encouraging users to create videos that are related to that particular theme
for example; #Lipsncychallenge, #Comedychallenge, etc.

TikTok has become a leading player among short-form video social apps since its inception in
2017. With over a billion global users, the app quickly became the darling of Gen Z. What
began as a place to share 15-second, user-generated videos, often focused on people dancing,
singing, talking, or lip-synching to various movement and audio trends, has emerged as a
powerhouse in influencer marketing, creativity, branded challenges, and advertising.
