2. Identify the three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that have the greatest impact in
the locality where the campus is located or in nearby areas:

The three SDGs with the greatest impact are:

SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation)
SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities)
SDG 13 (Climate Action)

3. Choose the one that has the most accessible information:

SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) has the most accessible information due to recent local
reports and studies on water quality.

4. Conduct documentary research to learn about the issues related to the chosen SDG in the
locality:

Research findings:
- High levels of industrial waste in nearby rivers
- Limited access to clean water for local communities
- Increased risk of water-borne diseases

1. Define a specific problem situation related to the goal you have chosen and synthesize it
in a mind map:

Problem situation: Water pollution in nearby rivers due to industrial waste

Mind map:
- Central idea: Water pollution
- Causes: Industrial waste, lack of regulations, inadequate waste management
- Effects: Health risks, environmental damage, economic impacts
- Potential solutions: Implement regulations, increase waste treatment, community
awareness campaigns

a. General context:

- Magnitude: High levels of pollutants, including heavy metals and chemicals, have been
detected in the rivers.
- Evolution: The problem has worsened over the past decade due to increased industrial
activity and lack of effective regulations.

b. Impact on the community:

- Most affected groups: Local residents, farmers, and fishermen who rely on the rivers for
drinking water, irrigation, and livelihood.
- Direct consequences: Health problems (e.g., water-borne diseases, cancer), economic
losses (e.g., reduced crop yields, decreased fish populations).
- Indirect consequences: Environmental damage (e.g., ecosystem disruption, loss of
biodiversity), social impacts (e.g., increased poverty, migration).

c. Underlying causes:

- Inadequate waste management and disposal practices by industries.

- Lack of effective regulations and enforcement.
- Insufficient investment in wastewater treatment infrastructure.
- Limited community awareness and education.

d. Previous interventions:

- Government initiatives: Establishment of pollution control boards, implementation of

regulations.
- NGO efforts: Community awareness campaigns, advocacy for policy changes.
- Industrial actions: Some companies have adopted better waste management practices.

e. Available resources:

- Financial: Government funds, international grants, private sector investments.

- Human: Expertise in wastewater management, community leaders, volunteers.
- Technological: Wastewater treatment technologies, monitoring equipment.
- Other: Community support, media attention, research institutions.

In our work team, we have identified the following problem: Water pollution in nearby rivers
due to industrial waste, which affects local communities, farmers, and fishermen who rely on
the rivers for drinking water, irrigation, and livelihood, resulting in health risks, economic
losses, and environmental damage.

a. Documentary Research:

- High levels of industrial waste in nearby rivers

- Limited access to clean water for local communities
- Increased risk of water-borne diseases
- Environmental damage and economic impacts

b. Definition of the Specific Situation:

Water pollution in nearby rivers due to industrial waste, affecting local communities, farmers,
and fishermen.

c. Current and Desired State:

Current State:

- High levels of pollutants in rivers

- Health risks and economic losses for local communities
- Environmental damage and ecosystem disruption

Desired State:

- Reduced pollutants in rivers

- Improved access to clean water for local communities
- Minimized health risks and economic losses
- Restored environmental balance and ecosystem health

d. Integrative Statement:

Our team aims to address the critical issue of water pollution in nearby rivers, caused by
industrial waste, to improve the health, well-being, and livelihoods of local communities,
while promoting environmental sustainability.

After analyzing the collected information and comparing the findings with our initial research,
we have identified that the problem of water pollution from industrial waste still affects the
community as we initially proposed. The observed patterns and trends show that the issue is
more widespread and has more severe health implications than initially thought, with
consistent reports of pollution, increasing health concerns, and limited enforcement of
regulations. Consequently, we have decided to adjust the problem to 'water pollution from
industrial waste, exacerbated by inadequate regulations and enforcement, leading to
significant health risks and environmental damage' as it refines our understanding of how
this problem truly impacts the community, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive
solution that addresses both the sources of pollution and the regulatory framework.
