EI and QC class note 2

A gauge is a device that provides dimensional information according to specific standards, with various types including plug, ring, and snap gauges. Go-no-go gauges are used to check if parts are within tolerance, ensuring interchangeability, while maximum and minimum material conditions define the limits of material in features. Taylor's principle emphasizes that go gauges should check maximum material conditions and no-go gauges should inspect minimum material conditions, with materials for gauges needing to be hard, wear-resistant, and dimensionally stable.

GAUGE

It is a device used to provide certain dimensional information,

according to a specified standard or system.

Types of gauge

1. Plug gauge
2. Ring gauge
3. Taper gauge
4. Snap gauge
5. Feeler gauge
6. Thread gauge
7. Form gauge
GO and NOGO gauge

A go-no-go gauge is a mechanical tool used to check if a part is within tolerance. It is used
to ensure that parts are interchangeable between processes or manufacturers.

Example: If a hole is specified as 10 mm

with a tolerance of +/- 0.05mm

• The "go" gauge would be 9.95 mm.

• The "no go" gauge would be 10.05
mm.
Maximum and Minimum Material Condition

Maximum and Minimum Meterial

Condition:

 Maximum material condition (MMC)

corresponds to a condition in which a
feature contains the maximum amount of
material within the stated limits.

 For example: maximum limit on shaft and

minimum limit on the hole.

 MMC is important with regard to

geometrical tolerances since it critically
affects the interchangeability of
manufactured parts.

Least Material Condition (LMC):

 The condition in which a feature contains

the least amount of material within the
stated limits.

e.g. maximum hole diameter, minimum shaft

diameter.
TAYLOR’S PRINCIPLE
Developed by William Taylor in 1905
The GO gauge should be designed in such a way that it will check the
maximum material condition of as many dimensions as possible, where as
a NO-GO gauge should inspect the minimum material condition of one
dimension only at a time.

A) Plug gauge B) Snap gauge

 A GO gauge corresponds to maximum metal condition.

For example: Upper limit of a shaft (Snap) or lower limit of a hole (Plug)

 NO GO limit gauge: A NO GO gauge corresponds to minimum metal condition

For example: Lower limit of a shaft (Snap) and the upper limit of a hole
(Plug)
MATERIALS FOR GAUGES

1. Hard and wear resistant, corrosion resistant.

2. Capable of maintaining dimension stability.

3. Low coefficient of expansion.

Examples: High carbon steel, Mild steel, Chromium plated

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF GAUGES

Advantages

1. Quicker inspection method

2. Used in mass production
3. Ensure interchangeability
4. Need semiskilled labor
5. Check both linear and geometric features
6. Economical

Disadvantages

1. Do not indicate exact size

2. Errors due to wear and tear
3. Difficulty in checking of finer tolerance
