Nurse’s responsibility in promoting rest and sleep MAKING is one of the nursing procedure that provides comfort for the patient, It is the act of arranging bedclothes, pillows and other bed appliances to give ‘comfort and support to the patient, Bed making is important because hospitalized patients spend most of their time on bed. Purpose of Bed Making a) For patient's comfort and support. b) To prevent pressure sore. Creases, crumbs, wet and torn sheets causes pressure on the skin especially the pressure areas leading to pressure sores. ©) To give easy access to parts of the body under care. E.g. fractured limb covered with the bed cradle. d) To maintain therapeutic position. E.g. cardiac bed and post-operation bed. ¢) Itis a means of controlling infection. (Prompt changing of soiled and wet linen). Principles of Bed Making 1 PAA ws Bed making should be carried out as often as necessary to: i. To smoothen creases and ensure sheets are smooth and clean, ii, To remove dirt and debris from the bed. ' iii, To make the room/ward tidy and neat. ‘Two skilled nurses are required for bed making; and they must work in harmony. All the materials must be gathered at the bedside before starting to make bed. ‘The nurse should ensure that the mattress, bed sheets are in good’ therapeutic condition. Avoid jerky or sudden movements during bed making. This can scare the patient and cause a fall. Avoid exposing patient’s body during bed making. Extra hands may be needed in making special beds. Shaking and flapping of the bed clothes should be avoided. Dirt and debris can be removed with gentle, smooth movement causing little disturbance in the air. When shaking the bed clothes and pillows, the nurse should turn away from the patient. Bed clothes must never be allowed to touch or drag on the floor. 10,Patients must not lie directly on mackintosh or waterproof sheets, 1 Bed making should be skilfully made as quickly as possible. 12.Conversation during bed making should be minimal and should involve the patient, It should not be on personal matters between the nurses. Requirements for Bed Making 1 2, 3, Bed stead: are made of metal and painted white to facilitate cleaning. Mattress: made of strong foam and covered with waterproof material to prevent fluid soaking into the foam and to facilitate cleaning Pillows: made of foam but not covered with waterproof material so that it can remain soft. Feather pillows are not used in the hospital because of allergy. Pillow slips are worn on pillows and mackintosh is used to cover when necessary, Blankets, bed linen, pillow slips, counterpanes Draw sheets and draw mackintosh/waterproof: These are used to cover the middle portion of the bed at the position of the buttocks. It is to prevent soiling the big bottom sheet; it can be changed more frequently or the soiled | area pulled out to keep the patient fresh and clean. Long mackintosh or waterproof sheet. Counterpanes: They are coloured sheets used to cover the undccupied bed. It makes the ward look neat and beautiful. ‘Types of Bed Making Noagseone 8. Simple unoccupied bed. Admission bed Occupied bed Cardiac bed Post-operation bed Fracture bed Divided bed ‘Making a cot Bed Accessories: Bed table: This allows the patient to eat in bed and also to support in orthopnoeic position. Bed cradle: To lift bed clothes of a part of the body. : Back rest: It is usually made with the bed to lift the head and back of the patient.
