1. INTRODCTION TO INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT)

Anyone who says that the Internet has fundamentally changed society may be right, but at the same
time, the greatest transformation actually still lies ahead of us. Several new technologies are now
converging in a way that means the Internet is on the brink of a substantial expansion as objects large
and small get connected and assume their own webidentity.
Following on from the Internet of computers, when our servers and personal computers were
connected to a global network, and the Internet of mobile telephones, when it was the turn of
telephones and other mobile units, the next phase of development is the Internet of things, when more
or less anything will be connected and managed in the virtual world. This revolution will be the Net’s
largest enlargement ever and will have sweeping effects on every industry — and all of our every day
lives.

Smart connectivity with existing networks and context-aware computation using network resources is
an indispensable part of IoT. With the growing presence of Wi-Fi and 4G-LTE wireless Internet access,
the evolution towards ubiquitous information and communication networks is already evident.
However, for the Internet of Things vision to successfully emerge, the computing paradigm will need
to go beyond traditional mobile computing scenarios that use smart phones and portables, and evolve
into connecting everyday existing objects and embedding intelligence into our environment. For
technology to disappear from the consciousness of the user, the Internet of Things demands: a shared
understanding of the situation of its users and their appliances, software architectures and pervasive
communication networks to process and convey the contextual information to where it is relevant, and
the analytics tools in the Internet of Things that aim for autonomous and smart behavior. With these
three fundamental grounds in place, smart connectivity and context-aware computation can be
accomplished.

1
THE INDUSTRIAL INTERNET OF THINGS

The industrial internet of things (IIOT) refers to the extension and use of the internet of things (IOT) in
industrial sectors and applications. The IIOT encompasses industrial applications, including robotics,
medical devices, and software-defined production processes.

2. HISTORY

In early 1982 the concept of the network of smart devices was discussed, with a modified
Coke machine. This coke machine is modified at ―Carnegie Mellon University‖ and becoming the
first Internet-connected appliance. This machine was able to report its inventory and whether
newly loaded drinks were cold.

In 1994 Reza Raji explained the idea of IoT as “small packets of data to a large set of nodes,
so as to integrate and automate everything from home appliances to entire factories”. After
that many companies proposed various solutions like Microsoft’s at Workor Novell’s Nest. Bill Joy
proposed Device to Device (D2D) communication as a part of his ―Six Webs‖ frameworks at the
World Economic Forum at Davos in 1999.

The thought of Internet of Things first became popular in 1999. British entrepreneur Kevin
Ashton first used the term Internet of Things in 1999 while working at Auto-ID labs. Besides that
near field communication, barcode scanners, QR code scanners and digital watermarking are the
various devices which are working on IoT in the present scenario.

2
3. DEFINITION

―Today computers and the Internet are almost wholly dependent on human beings for information.
Nearly all of the roughly 50 petabytes (1 petabyte=1015 bytes) of data available on the Internet
were first captured and created by human beings by typing, pressing a record button, taking a
digital picture, or scanning a bar code. Conventional diagrams of the Internet leave out the most
numerous and important routers of all - people. The problem is, people have limited time, attention
and accuracy all of which means they are not very good at capturing data about things in the real
world. And that's a big deal. We're physical, and so is our environment … You can't eat bits, burn
them to stay warm or put them in your gas tank. Ideas and information are important, but things
matter much more. Yet today's information technology is so dependent on data originated by people
that our computers know more about ideas than things. If we had computers that knew everything
there was to know about things using data they gathered without any help fromus we would be able
to track and count everything, and greatly reduce waste, loss and cost.We would know when things
needed replacing, repairing or recalling, and whether they were fresh or past their best. The
Internet of Things has the potential to change the world, just as the Internet did or even more.

4. ARCHITECTURE OF INTERNET OF THINGS

Architecture of internet Of Things contains basically 4 layers:

 Application Layer
 Gateway and the network layer
 Management Service layer
 Sensor layer

APPLICATION LAYER:

Lowest Abstraction Layer
 With sensors we are creating digital nervous system.
 Incorporated to measure physical quantities
 Interconnects the physical and digital world
 Collects and process the real time information
GATEWAY AND THE NETWORK LAYER:

Robust and High performance network infrastructure
 Supports the communication requirements for latency, bandwidth or security
 Allows multiple organizations to share and use the same network independently
MANAGEMENT LAYER:
 Capturing of periodic sensory data
 Data Analytics (Extracts relevant information from massive amount of raw data)
 Streaming Analytics (Process real time data)
 Ensures security and privacy of data.

3
5. APPLICATIONS

There are several application domains which will be impacted by the emerging Internet of
Things. The applications can be classified based on the type of network availability, coverage,
scale, heterogeneity, repeatability, user involvement and impact.
We categorize the applications into four application domains:
(1) Personal and Home
(2) Enterprise
(3) Utilities
(4) Mobile

There is a huge crossover in applications and the use of data between domains. For instance, the
Personal and Home IoT produces electricity usage data in the house and makes it available to the
electricity (utility) company which can in turn optimize the supply and demand in the Utility IoT.
The internet enables sharing of data between different service providers in a seamless manner
creating multiple business opportunities.

4
5.1 Home Automation using MQTT Protocol

Home automation is a new buzz now a days ..there is so many open source hardware available to build
your own home automation. So many tools, its easy to confuse you to decide which is best /suitable for
you. Keeping cost in mind and the basic requirement in mind you can find the best and cost effective
solution in this instructable to get started with your first automation project.
Target:
Target of this instruct able is to control your home appliance by your android phone.
When the you pews the button in your phone light or fan in your home turns on or off.

MQTT protocol:
In a simple language when you want to communicate to your controller through mobile or a web
browser you need a communication protocol and MQTT does that magic. MQTT is a message
queuing telemetry transport. It is specifically designed for automation. So where does it do magic??
its a light weight protocol, what is light weight means?? Well it's having a very low footprint to send
and receive data. So it uses very less amount of data to send and receive and mobile app using MQTT
also consumes less battery.

So MQTT is the best for This project.

MQTT works on publish subscribe events. It requires MQTT broker in between. Forgot all these
thing I explains MQTT with our example.

When you press the switch in your mobile or any web device you are telling your controller that you
want to turn on the switch. Now as in MQTT protocol MQTT broker seats in between your mobile
device and controller. Broker take care of successfully transfer your command to the controller.

5.2 EDUCATIONAL APPLICATION

Internet of Things (IoT) has impacted the educational institution strongly. Education institutions are
opting for the IoT ecosystem and utilizing various techniques ranging from augmented reality to cloud
computing. With the integration of IoT technology, physical environments are turning smarter and
more interconnected than ever. When discussing IoT in education, one might imagine things like an
advanced smart classroom, digital board, and voice-based command system.
However, IoT has progressed much further and can be utilized to keep the parents updated regarding
the pickup and drop of their kids, smart security cameras in the school premises, automated tracking of
student attendance and much more can be accomplished within the IoT ecosystem.

Role of IoT in Education

With the advancement in technology, our next generation is already addicted to the internet and
information on demand. The major question arises, will IoT in the education system have a positive or
negative effect on students. Many challenges such as privacy and additional cost of technology in
education are currently being studied. Many educational institutes are still reluctant to accept IoT and
are finding a better fit for it in the system. IoT in education can be broadly classified into student’s and
staff’s perspectives.
From the staff perspective, IoT has the potential to manage the class attendance of the students and the
availability of the necessary educational equipment. Installing the IoT sensors in multiple locations
within the educational system such as the library, cafeteria, and entrance helps in tracking and
monitoring the student’s activity at different locations.

6
6. Applications of IoT in the Educational Sector

IoT plays a vital role in transforming the traditional educational system. There is a wide range of IoT
applications in the educational sector. Let’s see a few of the areas in the educational sector where IoT can
be applied.

1. Energy Management
Internet of things can be utilized for energy management by installing IoT sensors in lights and water taps.
IoT based organization claims IoT solutions can help in creating a green campus by cutting down C02
emission. IoT can help campus monitor their energy consumption and make sure energy is used efficiently
with the help of the smart grid. With the IoT ecosystem, energy and water usage are controlled and
monitored thus establishing a healthy teaching atmosphere.

2. Security and remote classroom Access

One of the major concerns of an educational system which is creating a safe and secure atmosphere for
students can be achieved by opting for the IoT ecosystem. Embedded technologies such as NFC can be
utilized to manage students and their access to various parts of the campus such as laboratories and other
places within the educational institute. A real-time classroom control mechanism can be developed with
the help of NFC .

3. Health monitoring of IoT in Education

With the help of wearable devices, student’s health can be regularly monitored and can detect
physiological signals over time. With the help of IoT, signs of depression and suicidal intentions can be
detected in students and thus giving enough time for preventing any tragedy.

4. Educational Applications and Interactive learning

Educational apps facilitate customization and allow students to decide their course of action in the way
subject knowledge is delivered. From home computers to televisions students can access educational live
contents on multiple channels when on sick leave. Certain applications can be utilized to create a 3D
graphical textbook that features video content along with notes. Taking notes is no longer writing down on
a piece of paper, with the advancement in IoT students can read out loud and voice-based application
converts the speech to text and saves them in the digital notebook.

7
7. ROLE OF IOT IN DIFFERENT SECTORS

1. AGRICULTURE APPLICATION
In the era of the internet and connected devices Internet of Things (IoT) is the next big thing for the
industry. On the other hand, it is anticipated that by the next 30 years, the population of the world will
exceed 6 billion, and the incremental throughput needed to produce food for this population is 70%.
Incorporating IoT based smart agriculture systems is essential to cope up with this need. Let’s take a look
at the challenges facing the agriculture industry and how IoT is an answer to the problems.

Following are some of the important use cases of the IoT in the agriculture industry.

1. Real-time crop monitoring

Smart sensors, motion detectors, smart motion-sensing cameras, light detectors enable farmers to get the
real-time data of their farms to monitor the quality of their products and optimize resource management.

2. IoT analytics in agriculture

Data from smart sensors can be analyzed for predictive analysis and automated decision-making. It helps
farmers with smart, automated decision-making instead of classic rule-based systems or manual
procedures. Predictive analysis and machine learning can help farmers to cope up with extreme weather
conditions like floods, drought, etc. The main advantage of IoT analytics is the inclusion of soil quality,
temperature, humidity as a parameter.

3. Livestock management
As industry agriculture strongly depends on the manual workforce. Given the changes in the global
economic landscape, the supply-demand gap is increasing day by day. Livestock is one such area that
needs regular monitoring. IoT based smart tracking can help farmers to get the stock information directly
to their smart devices. It enables farmers with stock management to detect flue breakouts much earlier and
separate infected breeds with non-infected ones.
4. Drone-based use cases
Industry grade drones also have multiple use cases in smart farming. On the one hand, drones are used to
monitor air, soil, moisture quality; on the other hand; they can help with physical activities like automated
spraying of fertilizers, preventing physical breakouts in farms, etc. Obviously, there are some challenges
incorporating drones in farms, but successful deployment and use cases can help to reduce the manual
workforce in agriculture significantly.

8
5. Smart greenhouse solutions
Greenhouses are conventionally used to maintain the necessary atmosphere for plants, and this process
demands continuous monitoring and manual intervention. Industrial IoT solutions can be incorporated to
automate this process. Data collected by smart sensors can be automatically analysed, and deep learning-
based systems can be deployed to make decisions and create a certain climate automatically. With these
smart sensors, climate variables and water consumption can be monitored via SMS or Wi-Fi-based
systems.

6. Smart waste management

One of the main differences between agriculture and other industry is the value of industrial waste.
Biological waste produced from farming can be reused for making fertilizers; IoT solutions can help
manage the process remotely in a smart way. Smart sensors can be used to measure the presence of toxic
chemicals in wastes and manage the proper agricultural lifecycle.

one interacts with the vehicle.
 Infrastructure Segment: Traffic management utilities such as traffic lights, cameras embedded
with IoT will result in the smart management system.
 Core Centers: The data generated from the automobiles and infrastructure will be analyzed and
communicated between different segments.
 Applications of IoT in Transportation
In the transportation and logistics business, the internet of things has numerous opportunities. Vehicles can
be tracked for their speed, position, whether they are running or stopped, or at any danger, etc., using IoT.
In most situations, trucks are used for the purpose of transportation or to carry heavy loads. Measuring the
truck’s interior conditions such as humidity, temperature, and the light condition is very critical during
these periods. Using an IoT transport company can configure the payment service at the tolls or any
parking tickets. IoT also allows vehicle guidance and navigation control systems (road, air, water
transport) monitoring and controlling transport is highly possible with the use of IoT. Let’s look at the
different applications of IoT in transportation.

system physically on the Blynk app.

10.2Hardware Requirements :
1) Power Supply Board
2) 2 Channel Relay
3) Node MCU (ESP8266)

14. PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

An application is installed in the mobile (Blynk).

1. ESP8266 Wi-Fi module used for providing communication between the

applicationand system.
2. By using this we can switch on or off the lights or fans automatically when we
areoutside
3. Also the notification gets triggered in Blynk app whenever a motion is detected

CONCLUSION

The project ―IOT BASED HOME AUTOMATION SYSTEM‖ has been

successfully designed and tested. Integrating features of all the hardware components
used have developed it. Presence of every module has been reasoned out and placed
carefully thus contributing to the best working of the unit. Secondly, using highly
advanced IC’s and with the help of growing technology the project has been
successfully implemented.

Embedded systems are emerging as a technology with high potential. In the past
decades microprocessor based embedded system ruled the market. The last decade
witnessed the revolution of Microcontroller based embedded systems. With regards
to the requirements gathered the manual work and the complexity in counting can be
achieved with the help of electronic devices.
