Manufacturing Laboratory-II (ME308)

Report

Date of submission: 18/02/2024 Name: Tanishq Jain

Group: Wednesday_C Entry No: 2021MEB1330

● Experiment No. - 4

● Experiment title – Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) through Computer Numerical Control
(CNC) lathe and (VMC)

● Objective(s)
o To understand the concept of Computer aided manufacturing (CAM).
o To understand applications of Computer aided manufacturing (CAM) for CNC lathe and VMC.
o Know different steps in CAM programming.

● Material and apparatus used

In this experiment we use,
 CNC milling machine.
 A CNC simulator software
 Software that communicates with the machine.
 End mill of diameter = 5mm.
 A piece of acrylic sheet of approximately size of 7.5cm × 7.5cm × 0.7cm were used to
demonstrate the milling operation on the CNC machine.

● Experimental procedure
1. On the sketch, first indicate the coordinates that will be milled off the workpiece (in the absolute
system). Then, the same drawing's G-code and M-code should be written . G code is written to
perform preparatory functions and M code is written to perform miscellaneous functions.
2. Put the 5mm diameter end mill tool in the machine.
3. After that, the acrylic workpiece must be set in the vice such that the top surface is parallel to the
tool face and elevated sufficiently to prevent contact between the tool and vice.
4. Set the software's origin first, and then reset the reference point by positioning the tool at the
corner of the workpiece.
5. After entering the G-code into the program and running a dry run of the code in the air to receive
a preview, we update the code if any problems are found.
6. After choosing the motor speed, the code is then carried out, and the milling procedure is
finished.
7. Similarly other designs can be made. An operator is required to look at the machine while it is
working to avoid any mishap.
8. After brushing both the workpiece and the machine, the final drawing is then obtained.

● Results and discussion

 In this experiment we learned about G and M codes for CNC milling machine and made the
required geometry design.
 The following pattern was made using the CNC Machine by using CNC program.
1) G-code for geometry 2) Pattern on workpiece

3) Tool movement on software

● Learning from the experiments

1. Learned about CNC part programming.
2. CNC system components: part program, machine control unit, and processing equipment.
3. Learned about advantages and disadvantages of using CAM and CNC.
4. Learned how to work on CNC milling machine
5. Learned that the G-codes depend on the type of manufacturer of the CNC machine.
6. We observed that CAM provides us greater speed in producing components, greater accuracy
and consistency, it does not take breaks therefore greater efficiency as well. Comparing with
traditional methods CNC machines are very much fully automated.
7. But there are a little limitation as well such as for every different product we have to write a
new part program and also skilled labour is required for this part.
8. We observed that CNC is a sophisticated system which requires every minute details for
performing even a single straight cut, like setting the origin of the workpiece.
● Safety concerns
1) Be aware of the machine's physical limits, including maximum speeds, travel distances, and
load capacities. Exceeding these limits can result in damage to the machine or tools.
2) Double-check your G-code for programming errors, such as incorrect toolpaths, rapid
movements, or improper feed rates.
3) Perform a dry run before actual machining process to receive the preview and avoid any
problems or dimensioning errors in process.
