Exercise 1
1. Show that if H and K are subgroups of G then H ∩ K is a subgroup of H and a subgroup K.
Exercise 2
1. Show that if H is a subgroup of G, and g ∈ G, then gHg −1 = ghg −1 , h ∈ H is a subgroup of G.
2. Let G be a group and H a subgroup of G. Show that the following are equivalent:
(a) gHg −1 = H
(b) For all h ∈ H, ghg −1 ∈ H
(c) gH = Hg
3. Let x ∈ G and xH be a left coset of a subgroup H of G. Find a subgroup K of G such that Kx = xH.
Exercise 3
Consider the group Q8 = {1, −1, i, −i, j, −j, k, −k}, where i2 = j 2 = k 2 = −1 and ij = −ji = k. (See
Chapter 3 page 36).
3. Find Z(Q8 )
