Verb

Definition:
Verb is a word which is taken from Latin verb Verbum. Verb is a word which
shows an action, state, property or location.
Kinds
1) Auxiliary Verbs
2) Main Verbs

1. Auxiliary verb doesn’t have particular meaning and used for making changes in
a sentence.
It has three main parts:
 Primary Auxiliary Verbs
 Model Auxiliary Verbs
 Semi Auxiliary Verbs
a) Primary Auxiliary Verbs are those verbs which make the main part of auxiliary
verbs.
They are three kinds:
 To be verbs: they are those verbs which shows state and location.
They are:
Am, Is, Are, Was, Were, Be, Being, Been.
 To do verbs: they are those verbs which infer performing an action.
They are:
Do, Does, Did.
 To have verbs: they are those verbs which shows the property.
They are:
Have, Has, Had.
b) Model Auxiliary Verbs express attitude such as permission, possibility,
obligation and necessity.
They are:
Can and could
Shall and should
May and might
Must and had to
Will and would
Ought to
c) Semi Auxiliary Verbs
They are:
Dare, Need, Used to
2. Main verbs has a particular meaning and is not used for making changes in a
sentence.
They are:
 Transitive Verbs
 Intransitive Verbs
 Phrasal Verbs
 Non Action Verbs
 Linking Verbs
 Causative Verbs
 Regular and irregular verbs

A) Transitive Verbs
It is a verb which needs to object in a sentence.
They are:
Mono Transitive
Di Transitive
Complex Transitive
 Mono Transitive Verb: One direct object follows the verb.
Ex: He speaks English.
 Di Transitive Verb: One direct object + one indirect object follows the
verb.
Ex: I bought a gift for Ali
 Complex Transitive verb: A verb that can be used transitively or
intransitively.
Ex: He speaks hard.
B) Intransitive Verb:
Intransitive verb is a verb that doesn’t need to object.
Ex: He goes to school. He swim in the river.
C) Phrasal Verb
A verb plus preposition which has a special meaning is called phrasal Verb.
They are:
Separable Phrasal Verb
Inseparable Phrasal Verb

 Separable phrasal verb: It is a verb that can be separated by object.


Ex: Turn off, Turn on, Put off, Fill in
 Inseparable phrasal verb: It is a verb that can’t be separated by object.
Ex: Come back, sit down, stand up.
D) Linking Verb
It shows relationship of the subject to the other part of a sentence.
Ex: Taste, smell, feel, look, sound, grow, seem, appear.
E) Causative verb
It is a verb which causes someone to do something.
Get: persuade
Make: force
Help: assist
Let: allow
Have: choose
F) Non Action Verb
It is a verb used to express an existing situation, not an action. Note it is also
called non progressive verb because it cannot be used in ing form.
They are:
 Sense; smell, touch, see, hear, taste.
 Ownership; have, has, had, own, possess
 Mental activity; know, understand, forget, need, want,
 Emotion and attitude: love, like, hate, feel
 State of being; to be verbs
G) Regular And Irregular Verbs
Regular verbs are those verbs which takes (Ed) in the second and third form. And
irregular verbs are those verbs which irregularly changes their forms.
Regular Examples: Play, Played, Played
Irregular Examples: Take, Took, Taken
3. Forms
Each verb has 3 main forms:
 Present
 Past
 Past participate
