COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to address the theoretical and analytical tools relevant to the assessment,
formulation, and implementation of business/corporate strategy. Subjects covered in this course
are: external/internal environment analysis, business strategy, corporate strategy, strategic
processes, strategy execution, competition, etc. This course will utilize a variety of teaching
methods that will help students to understand the practical application of strategic concepts.
In this course, we aim to understand why and how some firms perform better than others. We
will take the perspective of a CEO or managers and learn topics related to environment analyses,
strategy formulation, and strategy implementation.
- Understand the tools you can utilize to analyze a firm’s external environment.
- Understand the tools you can utilize to analyze a firm’s internal resources and capabilities.

A. Attendance and participation (25)
This course will involve discussions and exercises, and you are required to come to class and
actively participate in class activities. You will submit a short summary that describes how you
participated and contributed to class at the end of every class. More details will be explained in
class. The class participation part will be evaluated based on the quality and the quantity of your
contribution during class hours.
If a student attends less than 3/4 of the class, the grade will be ‘F’.
B. Individual Assignment (30)
This will be a short report about a firm’s external and internal environment analysis. You will
choose one firm among two firms (to be decided in class) and conduct external/internal analysis
for the firm, using the tools and frameworks that we learn in class. I will explain more about the
details in class. Due before 23:59, April 30th. Submit to Blackboard.
Please submit in the form of a general report rather than a summarized bullet-point format.
C. Team project (45. Presentation 15 & report 30)
Initial proposal presentation for team project: May 12th.
Team presentation materials due before class on June 2nd.
Team presentations on June 2nd, June 4th, June 9th, and June 11th.
Team report due before 23:59, June 18th.
You will conduct analyses of two firms that compete with each other in an industry and develop
recommendations. You are free to choose the two firms and the industry as long as they are not
covered by the cases covered in class.
1. Conduct external and internal environment analysis for two firms.
2. Analyze the business-level and corporate-level strategies of the two firms.
3. Provide recommendations for the firm with worse performance to improve future
performance. Your recommendations should cover business-level and corporate-level strategies.
Your recommendations should be based on the analyses results from 1. and 2.
Your suggestions should be based on existing studies, theory, data, and/or reasonable
assumptions. Frameworks and tools for external/internal environment and strategy analysis
learned in class should be utilized.

Initial proposal presentation: May 12th.
All teams will make a short presentation about the team project in class for maximum of 15
minutes. As a team, you will present about the industry and the firms that you plan to analyze for
your project. You will explain about reasons for your choice in choosing the industry and the
firms. The initial proposal presentation will give you a chance to get feedback from your
classmates. The proposal presentation will not be graded. There are no requirements for the
format of the presentation.
Team presentation: Junes June 2nd, June 4th, June 9th, and June 11th. Submit materials to
Blackboard.
Teams will present about their project for maximum of 30 minutes. Additional 5 minutes will be
set aside for questions and answers after the presentation. All teams should submit their
presentation materials on Blackboard before class on the first day of team presentation (June
2nd). There are no requirements for the format of the presentation.
All team members should participate in the presentation. Each team member should deliver a
part of the presentation.
Please include the sources of information in the presentation (references).
Team project report: Due on June 18th. Submit to Blackboard.
Formatting Requirements –
a. No more than 25 pages, excluding appendices, cover, table of content and references.
b. Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing, 12-point font, 1-inch margin.
c. Appropriate headings and sub-headings.
d. Correct grammar and spelling.
e. Documented sources (citations and references).
Please submit in the form of a general report rather than a summarized bullet-point format.
Teams
Please form teams (3-4 students) before March 25th, 11:59 PM. If you do not form a team by
that time, I will randomly assign you to a team. You can enroll yourself into a team on
Blackboard.
Peer Evaluation
Submit the filled-in Peer Evaluation Form by 23:59 on June 18th. Mark adjustments may be
made accordingly.
