ANIMATION NCII
Quarter 1 – Module 4:
Maintain Hand Tools,
Equipment and Paraphernalia
(Week 4)
1

What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
understand Animation. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many
different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary
level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the
course.

The module is divided into two lessons, namely:

● Lesson 1 – Use and maintain hand tools, equipment and paraphernalia

● Lesson 2 – Procedures in Cleaning, Repairing, and Preparing of Reports

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. identify common malfunction (unplanned or unusual events) when using

hand tools, equipment and paraphernalia;
2. follow procedures in preparing a report to property custodian;
3. follow procedures in cleaning, tightening and simple repair of hand tools,
equipment and paraphernalia; and
4. perform safety procedures in using hand tools, equipment and paraphernalia.

What I Know

Safety Procedures in Using
Lesson
Hand Tools, Equipment, and
1 Paraphernalia

What’s In

In the previous module you learned how to test, examine and analyze the hand tools
and equipment. Acquiring hand tools and equipment that are in good shape is an
investment. When they're well maintained, an animator will save both time and
money. It is important to keep all the tools in good form because cleaning your tools
most of the time may be the last thing you want to do after a day of work.

Caring for your equipment needs a bit of dedication. According to Ando, 2016
“Maintaining your tools in good shape does not have to be difficult to do if you are
prepared”.

This module covers basic maintenance and safety procedures of tools, equipment,
and other paraphernalia in animation. It also includes the proper steps or procedures
in cleaning, repairing and preparing reports for hand tools, equipment, and
paraphernalia. It is vital that your tools and equipment must be subjected to regular
checking and maintenance to keep them running at highest performance. For
example, personal computers require occasional cleaning to get the dust out of
cooling fans and heat sinks. When it is not properly treated then getting it fixed would
cost a lot.

As the saying goes, “Safety does not come with lucky. It has to be prepared. Success
will always be with you, as long as you place safety as the first policy.” Ando, 2016.

What’s New

Maintenance is an excellent means of improving the performance and condition of

equipment and facilities. An effective maintenance program identifies problems long
before any equipment or facility breaks down or deteriorates.

A good maintenance system presents the early discovery of problems, thus providing
plenty of lead time for effective maintenance planning. The animators must value
the importance of maintaining the facilities, equipment and tools they are using or
under their care. Hence, the animator must value the presence and availability of
these resources for effective training and learning processes.

What is It

TECHNICAL TERMS
● electronic device - any device capable of making or transmitting
still or moving photographs, video recordings,
or images of any kind
● paraphernalia - things necessary for any activity
● functional - tools and equipment that are in good condition
● malfunction - a breakdown of an equipment to function
properly
● non-functional - tools and equipment that are unserviceable

Tools are part of everybody's life especially to the animators. It is difficult for
animators to be aware that the tools may pose hazards. Serious accidents can
happen no matter how cautious animators are in taking steps to avoid or eliminate
tool-related hazards. They must learn to recognize the hazards associated with the
different tools they use and the safety precautions necessary to prevent those
hazards.

Mishandling of hand tools and equipment is a source of injury to workers. In many

cases, injury happens because we assume that we know how to use the tool.

Why Maintain?
3
General Objective:
● To keep the optimum condition of physical facilities at acceptable levels and
minimum cost to satisfy the expected performance of programs, services, and
activities at acceptable and minimum costs Specific Objectives:
▪ To extend the useful life of physical facilities

▪ To assure the operational readiness of installed equipment and

maximum possible return on investments
▪ To properly discard hazardous wastes

▪ To ensure the safety of personnel using the facilities, physical

properties and the environment

SAFETY RULES
Security protocol and careful handling of tools and equipment are widely observed
when dealing with all of the animation industry's electronic devices to prevent harm
or injury.
An animator works on his or her desk with so many things like lamps, lightboxes,
animation discs, graphic tablets and computers. It’s important that an animator is
familiar with proper use of each tool. An animator's job is less difficult, with the
proper knowledge of using tools. The following safety rules apply to every animator.
o Workstation
✔ Keep your workstation clean.
✔ Avoid compiling too many papers on your desk, papers are fire hazards,
and can destroy your equipment and devices.
✔ Place the scrap materials in appropriate containers.
✔ Maintain proper lighting in your workstation. If you cannot see your work,
then you cannot see the hazard.
✔ Ensure the surroundings are free from flammable materials before working
with tools that can produce sparks.

o Tools
✔ Check your tools before using.
✔ Check the breakage of parts if there are cracks on the glass of the
animation lightbox and animation disc.
✔ Remove the power source when performing maintenance and cleaning the
equipment and other electronic devices.

Common Malfunctions When Using Hand Tools and Equipment

Computers and other electronic devices are essential to every person in today's world
to the extent that they have become a necessity to have one of these electronic

4
devices. Yet, many factors such as environmental damage, corrosion, vibration, and
temperature cause a system to wear out. Faulty ways to use these devices can lead
to defects or damage. Learning how to use and care for one's computer is therefore
important for prolonging its usefulness and minimizing the harm it might bring.
These are the common malfunctions when using hand tools and equipment:
● Incorrect use of equipment for the job would have a negative impact on the
equipment.
● So much force exerted on equipment, which is less than their ability to handle,
causes the equipment to be unserviceable.
● Tools that are not kept and maintained would make them hard to work and
non-functional.

Procedures of Identifying Non-functional Tools and Equipment

To identify non-functional tools and equipment, the following inspections should be
done.
● Visual inspection. It refers to the visual observation of an expert on the
appearance of the tools and equipment.

● Functionality. The animator has to check the range of operations that can be
run on a computer or other electronic systems. Vibration and extra noise from
the operation means problems on parts and accessories started to wear out.

● Performance. In accomplishing one task the animator has to check/ clearly

inspect the process. When there is something wrong with the performance of
either hand tools or equipment, they need an immediate repair or
maintenance.

● Power supply. This is for electrically operated equipment only. The animator
has to check the hardware component that supplies power to an electrical
device. Failure to meet the required power supply, malfunction will occur in
the part of equipment.

● Persons involved. It refers to the technical person who has the knowledge and
skills about the technology. The animator has to consult someone who is
technically expert on the job.

What’s New

Good Quality tools can be a big investment, but if you take good care of
them, they will last longer and return the favor. Making sure your tools are properly
stored, cleaned, and well maintained will save you time and money as well as making
your projects and jobs much easier.

It is always important to be aware of the environment that you are storing your tools
in as well. Rust is public enemy number one when it comes to tools. Places like
enclosed areas can have humidity issues, especially if they aren’t air conditioned or
heated.

Cleaning your tools is probably the last thing you want to do after a hard day’s work,
but it is essential for keeping your tools in good shape. It is a process that only takes
a few seconds and is time well spent that will prevent you from having to repair or
replace tools. You can clean most hand tools with a simple wipe down using a rag.
Keeping all these tips in mind when storing and cleaning your tools will ensure that
you get the most out of your tools and they last long.

A maintenance plan or procedure would be very helpful. These will include all the
maintenance tasks to be performed, the procedures in cleaning hand tools,
equipment and paraphernalia, the methods of maintenance to be used, all the
necessary materials and equipment and the maintenance costs involved.

What is It

TECHNICAL TERMS

● electronic component - a part capable of amplifying or regulating voltages or

currents without a mechanical or other nonelectric regulation, or of switching
currents or voltages without a mechanical switch
● operating procedure - is a procedure for operating something or for dealing
with a given situation
● property custodian - a person responsible for the physical custody, care,
and safekeeping over property in their possession or under
their supervision
● repair manual - manuals issued by manufacturers covering the care,
servicing and repair of their goods

6
● cleaning tools - a range of precise and unique devices and items made and
built to clean
● maintenance - the method of keeping property
or
equipment in good condition by making repairs,
correcting problems

In any workplace, our safety depends on cleanliness. Having the appropriate cleaning
tools become essential when maintaining and repairing computers and other
electronic devices used in the animation workstation. Using the appropriate cleaning
tools helps ensure that electronic components are not damaged during cleaning.

Keeping computers and other electronic devices clean inside and out is a vital part
of a maintenance program. Dirt accumulated from pencil erasures can cause
problems with the physical operation of fans, buttons, and other mechanical
components of computers. An excessive buildup of dust acts like an insulator and
traps the heat on any electrical component. This insulation impairs the ability of heat
sinks and cooling fans to keep components cool, causing chips and circuits to
overheat and fail. Dirty animation lightbox or animation disc may prevent animators
from producing a good clean-up drawing. The following are common cleaning tools
used in the animation room.

Tools for Cleaning

● Lint-free cloth is a special cleaning cloth type which does not give up any fluff
when used. Being lint-free means that the cloth is less likely to build up a
charge that can cause ESD damage to electronic equipment.

● Compressed air is used to remove dust and debris from various computer
components without touching the components.

● Brush is used to brush off dust from pencil erasures.

● Cable ties are used to keep cables neatly tied inside and outside of a computer.

● Vacuum cleaner is a device used to remove dirt and dust.

● Glass cleaner is used to clean the screen of computer monitors.

Methods of Cleaning Hand Tools and Equipment

● Save hand tools in good, clean condition with two sets of rags. For cleaning or
handling electrical components one rag should be lint-free. The other rag
should be oily, in order to avoid rust and corrosion.
7
● Clean all electronic equipment by brushing off any dust and wiping off excess
oil or grease with a clean rag.

● Check any electrical cables for dirt, and for any cut or exposed wires.

● Clean the computer chassis or case and the outside of the monitor with a
cleaning solution on a damp, lint-free cloth.

● Use a can of compressed air to clean dusty components. Compressed air does
not cause electrostatic buildup on components.

● Use a soft clean cloth moistened with water to wipe the screen clean.

● Use a soft, clean damp cloth to clean the animation lightbox to avoid scratches
on the glass.

● Turn the keyboard upside down and gently shake it to remove dirt and dust.
Use a can of compressed air to clean between the keys.

● Use only a vacuum cleaner approved for electronic components.

Steps in Preparing a Report to a Property Custodian

1. Conduct an inventory of tools and equipment.

2. Record the number of non-functional tools and equipment.

3. Segregate tools that are serviceable or unserviceable.

4. Report the number of tools and equipment that are non-functional but
subject for repair.

5. Label tools and equipment that are condemnable.

6. Return tools and equipment in the tool cabinet per operating procedures.

Reporting to a Property Custodian

1. Secure an inspection report from the person responsible.

2. Determine the defective instrument based on the report form.

3. Replace inspected tool and equipment defects based on the report form.

4. Use the repair manual in replacing the defective parts.

REMEMBER:

· There is certainly no absolute way to avoid any unforeseen malfunctions.

· The only way to minimize them is to have the appropriate knowledge in using
the different tools.

· Proper inspection and assessment of tools must also be practiced ensuring

the safety of the worker and the accurate completion of a job requirement.
8
· It is the responsibility of everyone to maintain the good operating condition
of all the hand tools, equipment and paraphernalia in the workplace. Since
these tools help in the completion of the different job requirements,
keeping them well preserved will make work easier and more efficient.
