INTRODUCTION
Education is essential in making a better society. It helps people gain skills, learn, and
think clearly, which makes them better people and contributes to the economy’s growth
(Hanushek & Wößmann, 2010). Throughout our lives- from early childhood learning to higher
education, learning helps us understand the world and our place in it. However, one of the crucial
issues that makes education less effective is the students’ concentration.
Academic Advising & Career Centre (2010) defined concentration that concentrating is
about focusing all the mental energy on one thing and ignoring everything else that might
distract a student. The capability to focus and maintain attention in class is significant and
needed for absorbing information and making learning possible. Hariyanto (2021) stated that "If
the learner is paying attention, then the learner will follow and carry out the learning activities
well" Despite concentration deciding a student’s engagement in class, it also influences learning
results because with great attention in class, students will easily do great in class and learn
effectively. However, without it, students face challenges like having trouble understanding
what they are learning, unable to finish their schoolwork, or not being actively engaging in class.
This qualitative research study aims to comprehensively understand the factors affecting
the Grade 12 HUMSS students' concentration towards their learning. By analyzing both internal
and external factors, the research will provide recommendations to enhance student’s learning
and improve their academic outcomes. In essence, failing to conduct this study will cause to
continue the challenges the learners will face and restrain positive potential change in education.
The study's findings are crucial for informing effective interventions and creating a more
supportive learning environment for this important student population.
Theoretical Framework
First is the student’s ability, as Walberg’s proposed, the ability of a student can greatly
affect or influence their educational outcomes. Because it shows the physical and mental
performance of a student inside the school. A student's ability is a great factor in the achieving of
better educational outcomes. A student may have abilities such as problem-solving, perceiving,
and remembering. Second was motivation, It shows in some studies that motivation has a
positive impact on the study strategy, academic performance, and the well-being of a student in
any type of education.(Vansteenkiste et al. 2005). Third variable was age and stage of
development, it shows that the age and stage of development influence the educational outcomes
of a student. Next is the quantity of instructions, it explains the amount of teaching on the
student's academic achievement. It depends on how long does the student study in school, which
is not significantly impact the outcomes of a student's academic performance unless the hours is
unusually long. Fifth was the quality of instructions, it refers to the teaching techniques used
inside the classroom that provides the individual learnings needed by the students and the quality
of education has a huge impact on the students learning because it shows the level of teaching
skills of a teacher towards their students. Next was classroom climate, it refers to the mood,
attitude, standard, and time of students inside the classroom. Having an unfavorable classroom
climate can be out of control, while having a positive climate inside the classroom gives the
students the feeling of safe and supportive towards them. The seventh was the home
environment, it refers to the environment of a student inside their home and how it can greatly
affect their academic focus. It does not only provide hereditary transmission of development
towards of a child but also to the social relationship and educational status. Eight was the peers,
peers refer to the group of people with same age, interest, and status. People agree that friends
not only influence the well-being of a person but also for achieving goals in their life. Peers can
influence his/her classmates in a good or bad way. Lastly was social media, refers to any
platforms or apps inside the internet that can be accessible to anyone. It has a huge impact to the
students well-being and and educational performance.
This research aims to determine the Factors Affecting the Learner's Concentration
towards Students Learning of Grade 12 HUMSS at JEMCC
1.1 External
1.2 Internal
Research Hypothesis
This study investigates the factors contributing to student engagement among Grade 12
HUMSS students at JE Mondejar Computer College, Inc. The research will explore both internal
factors and external factors to understand how they collectively influence student engagement
and its impact on academic achievement.
Internal Factors
External Factors
This framework shows the 2 types of factors that could affect the students’ concentration
which is affecting students’ learning.
The dependent variable is Factors affecting learners’ concentration while the independent
variable is students’ learning.
Significance of the Study
Students. This research will significantly improve the learning experience for senior high
HUMSS students. By identifying and addressing factors that affect their concentration.
Teachers. This study will provide educators with crucial knowledge of the concentration
difficulties experienced by HUMSS students. This understanding will enable them to create more
effective teaching strategies and classroom management approaches that better support these
students' learning.
Administration. This study can help create supportive learning environments and
implement policies enhancing student concentration.
Future researchers. This research will serve as a reference and a guideline for their
studies related to this topic and may broaden their knowledge about it.
Definition of Terms
The following are the terms used by the researchers in the study to provide a clear
understanding for the readers.
Concentration. It refers to the ability of Grade 12 HUMSS students at JEMCC to maintain focus,
attention, and effort on their academic tasks and learning activities.
Education. It refers to the systematic process of acquiring knowledge, skills, values, and
attitudes through instruction, training, and experience. It aims to develop individuals
intellectually, socially, and personally, preparing them for active participation in society.
External Factor. Are those that originate outside the student and affect their learning
experiences.
Factors. It refers to any elements, variables, or influences that can affect students’
learning. These factors can be internal and external.
Internal Factors. Are those that originate inside the students and affect their learning
experiences.
