The Koç School IB DP Subject Brief

Subject Group: PHYSICS

Course Description and Aims

As one of the three natural sciences in the IB Diploma Programme,

physics is concerned with an attempt to understand the natural world;
from determining the nature of the atom to finding patterns in the structure
of the universe. It is the search for answers from how the universe
exploded into life to the nature of time itself. Observations are essential to
the very core of the subject. Models are developed to try to understand
observations, which can become theories that attempt to explain the
observations. Besides leading to a better understanding of the natural
world, physics allows us to alter our environments.
DP physics enables students to engage with topical scientific issues
constructively. Students examine scientific knowledge claims in a
real-world context, fostering interest and curiosity. By exploring the
subject, they develop understandings, skills, and techniques that can be
applied across their studies and beyond.
Integral to the student experience of the DP physics course is the learning
that takes place through scientific inquiry both in the classroom and the
laboratory.
Through the overarching theme of the nature of science, the course aims to enable
students to:

● develop conceptual understanding that allows connections to be

made between different areas of the subject and other DP sciences
subjects
● acquire and apply a body of knowledge, methods, tools, and techniques that
characterize science
● develop the ability to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize scientific information and
claims.
● Develop the ability to approach unfamiliar situations with creativity and resilience.

● design and model solutions to local and global problems in a scientific context.

● Develop an appreciation of the possibilities and limitations of science.

● develop technology skills in a scientific context

● develop the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively.

● develop an awareness of the ethical, environmental, economic, cultural, and social

impact of science.

Syllabus Outline and Curriculum model overview

SL and HL distinction

Students at the standard level (SL) and higher level (HL) undertake a common core
syllabus and a common internal assessment (IA) scheme.

They are presented with a syllabus that encourages the development of certain skills,
attributes, and attitudes, as described in the “Assessment Objectives” section of the
guide.
Students at HL are required to study some topics in greater depth, as seen in the
curriculum model overview.

IB Assessment Overview
MEB Assessment

- Written Exams: Two common exams per semester, and there will be IB-type exam
questions.

- Performance Grades: Two performance grades per semester, and they will be based
on class participation, homework quiz results, and Lab reports assessed according to
simplified IB criteria. During 9 and 10th grade, students learn how to write a lab report.
This is an opportunity for them to become familiar with IB internal assessment criteria.
