Contemporary Arts – is the arts that springs out of the present-day events

and passion of the society

— It is the newest form of art, amusing people from the late 1960s or
early around 1970s up to this very minute.
— Essential to you not only because it belongs to your time but it also
serves a form of expression of the people’s present feelings and
longings

What is Contemporary Art?

• Contemporary means ‘of our time’ (now): defined as Art made after 1940.

•It is art made with non traditional materials: contemporary art uses all kinds
of media: any and every material; installation, video, land art.

•It does not have to be shown inside a gallery.

•The idea is often as important as the work: it is intended to make you think.

ART can be defined as the expression of creativity and imagination through

various techniques and media producing works to fulfill a variety of
purposes.

–Derived from the Latin word ars/artis which means to do or man- made.

Modern Art (1860-1970)

• There is no exact definition of modern art.

• There is no one style.

•Most scholars agree, however, that the term applies to art produced roughly
during the years 1860-1970.

• Artists practicing in this “style” generally reject Renaissance- based

convention in favor of the new and experimental.

-These artists experimented with materials, subject matter, technique, and

developed new theories about art, its role in the modern world, and the
function of the artist.
