Science 3 DLP 3 - Parts of eyes and their functions

This educational module focuses on the anatomy and functions of the eye, detailing both outer and inner parts such as the eyebrow, eyelashes, cornea, iris, and optic nerves. It includes interactive activities for students to match parts of the eye with their functions and understand how the eyes work in conjunction with light to form images. The module is part of the Basic Education Assistance for Mindanao (BEAM) project, aimed at enhancing distance learning in science for Grade III students.

To The Learner

The eyes are sense organs made for seeing. You can see things
because of your eyes. You can tell the size, color, and shape of
things by seeing. The eyes have parts. Each part of the eyes has a
function or work. In this module, you will discover and identify the
main parts of the eyes and their functions.

Something To Learn

Identify the main parts of the eyes and their functions.

Let’s Try This With Fun

Match the parts of the eyes with their functions.

1. eyebrow a. carry messages to the brain

2. eyelashes b. gets light images from the lens

3. eyelid c. focus light into the retina

4. cornea d. a hole that allows light to enter the

eyes
5. iris e. controls the amount of light that enters
the eyes
6. pupil f. covering of the eye through which light
enters
7. lens g. prevents sweat to run down the eyes

8. retina h. protect the eyes from dust and too

much light

9. optic nerves i. enables you to open and close your eyes

3
Let’s Study This

By studying the part of the eyes, you will understand how

each eye can see.

Our eyes cannot see when they are closed. We cannot see
well when we are in a very dark place. The eyes need light so they
can see.

We have two eyes. Each eye is called an eyeball. Our eyes

have two parts. They are the outer and the inner parts.

The outer part of the eyes has the eyebrow, eyelashes and
eyelids. The inner part has the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, retina and
optic nerve.

OUTER PARTS OF THE EYES

Eyebrow

Eyelashes
Eyelid

4
INNER PARTS OF THE EYE

HOW THE EYES WORK?

Study this picture below.

You can see an object when light shines on it. When you look
at the tree or table the light shines on it. When you look at a tree
or a table, the light from the sun or lamp carry the images of the
objects and enter into the cornea and pupil which passes through
the lens of the eye.

The lens focuses the image on the retina when an upside

down image of the tree or table is formed. As the image is
formed, the optic nerves sent the message to your brain. In the
brain, the image is no longer upside down. The brain tells you
that what you see is a tree or table.

Below is the chart to help you understand the parts of the eyes
and their functions.

HOW THE EYES WORK

You see an object when light shines on it. When you look at a
tree, the light carrying the image of the tree enters the 1. ________
and 2. ________ and passes through the lens of each eye. The
3..________ focuses the image on the retina where an upside-down
image of the tree is formed. As the image is formed, the 4 _______
send the message to your brain. In the brain the image is no
longer upside down. The 5. ________ tells you that what you see is
the tree.

Try To Remember

The outer parts of the eyes are eyebrow, eyelashes and eyelid.

Eyebrow prevents the sweat to pour down.

Eyelashes protect the eyes from dust and too much light.
Eyelid enables you to close and open your eyes.

The inner parts of the eyes are cornea, iris, pupil, lens, retina, and
optic nerves.

Cornea is the covering of the eye through which light enters.

Iris controls the amount of light that enters the eyes.

Pupil is an opening that becomes smaller in bright light and

bigger when it is dark.

Lens focus the light from the pupil to enable us to see near or far
objects.

Retina gets light images from the lens.

Optic nerves carry messages to the brain.
