LESSON PLAN DAY 3 FINAL.

This lesson plan for Science 6 focuses on understanding the effects of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions on Earth's surface, identifying different types of plate boundaries, and recognizing major and minor tectonic plates. It includes various activities such as an icebreaker, video discussions, group work, and evaluations to reinforce learning. The plan emphasizes preparedness, responsibility, and respect for nature while utilizing a PowerPoint presentation and a Cyber Science Worktext as references.

VALUE FOCUS
Preparedness and Responsibility, Curiosity and Respect for Nature:
III. PROCEDURE

PREPARATORY ACTIVITY

ICE BREAKER

(GUESS THE FACE OF THE HYBRID ANIMAL)

 Teacher will present a picture in the screen and student will guess what kind of animal is
being shown but with a twist.
REVIEW

Q1. What is our last topic?

 About Earthquake.
Q2. What is the instrument used by the scientists to detect, measure and record earthquakes?
 Seismograph
Q3. What do we call the group of scientists who study earthquakes?
 Seismologists
Q4. What kind of earthquake is caused by the movement of the earth’s crust.
 Tectonic Earthquake
Q5. What kind of earthquakes comes from erupting volcanoes?
 Volcanic Earthquake

IV. DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITY

MOTIVATION

Simple video clip about a recent earthquake or volcanic eruption.

1. THEN, ASK THEM TO ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS

Q1. What do you think caused this disaster?

Q2. Can we predict when and where the next earthquake or volcano will happen?

DISCUSSION
What Are Tectonic Plates?

Believe it or not over 250 million years ago all of the different continents on earth were actually
one giant land mass and it is called Pangaea.

-A tectonic plate is a large, rigid piece of the Earth's outer layer.

What are the major tectonic plates?

The major tectonic plates are large pieces of the Earth's lithosphere, and they cover most of the
planet's surface. Here are the seven major tectonic plates:

 Eurasian Plate
 Africa Plate
 Australia Plate
 South America Plate
 North America Plate
 Pacific Plate
 Antarctic Plate
The minor plates are:
 Philippines Sea Plate
 Scotia Plate
 Nazca Plate
 Cocos Plate
 Caribbean Plate
 Juan De Fuca Plate
 Somali Plate
 Bismark Plate
 Indian Plate
 Arabian Plate
1.Divergent Boundaries (Plates Move Apart)
 At divergent boundaries, two tectonic plates move away from each other.
 This happens mostly under the ocean. As the plates move apart, magma from beneath
the Earth’s surface rises up to fill the gap, forming new ocean crust.

What happens here?

 Earthquakes can happen because of the shifting plates.
 Volcanoes can form as magma escapes from the gap.

2. Convergent Boundaries (Plates Move Toward Each Other)

 At convergent boundaries, two tectonic plates move towards each other.
 When one plate is pushed under another, this is called subduction. In some cases, the
plates can crash into each other, forming mountains.

What happens here?

 Earthquakes are common as the plates push against each other.
 Volcanoes can also form, especially when one plate is pushed down into the mantle and
melts.

3. Transform Boundaries (Plates Slide Past Each Other)

 At transform boundaries, two tectonic plates slide past each other horizontally.
 This movement causes the crust to grind against each other, which can cause
earthquakes.

What happens here?

 Earthquakes happen because of the friction and pressure as the plates slide past each
other.
RECAP
 Divergent Boundaries: Plates move apart. New crust is created.
 Convergent Boundaries: Plates move towards each other. Mountains or volcanoes can
form.
 Transform Boundaries: Plates slide past each other. Earthquakes happen.
These three types of plate boundaries are important for understanding how the Earth’s surface
changes over time!

APPLICATION

(Group Work)

If you are listening you will know the different major and minor plates. Make a map that
consist of Major and Minor plates. Draw it in a bond-paper.

IV. GENERALIZATION

Q1. What plates move apart and because of this new crust is created?
 Divergent Boundaries: Plates move apart. New crust is created.

Q2. What plates move towards each other and because of this movement, mountains or
volcanoes can form?
 Convergent Boundaries: Plates move towards each other. Mountains or volcanoes can
form.

 Convergent Boundaries
 Divergent Boundaries
 Transform Boundaries
