Electric Vehicle Charging Circuit

Question:

Draw a fully labelled circuit diagram illustrating the three-phase 400V supply
system and earthing arrangement for the EV charging equipment. The diagram
must show the total earth fault loop path.

• Key Points for the Diagram:

 Three-phase 400V supply from the substation to the EV charging
unit.
 TT earthing arrangement at the EV charger.
 RCD (Type A) for additional protection.
 The earth fault loop path includes:
 Charger casing and local earth electrode.
 Earth conductor to the RCD and upstream protection.
 Back to the substation transformer. (Diagram will be
provided separately.)
Question 2 (A): Selection of Manufacturers’ Details

Criteria for Luminaires:

• Energy Efficiency: LED luminaires with high lumens-per-watt efficiency.

• Environment/External Influences: IP65-rated fittings for wet areas and IP44 for
general areas.
• Aesthetics: Modern, sleek designs matching the pool/café decor.

Location Type of Energy Environmental Aesthetic

Luminaire Efficiency Protection (IP Rating) Consideration
Pool Area Recessed LED High IP65 Discreet, recessed
downlights design
Café Seating Pendant LED High IP44 Decorative pendants
Area lights to match décor
Kitchen/Stor Surface- High IP54 Functional design
age mounted for utility areas
utility LEDs
(Pool Area) IP65 Recessed LED downlights.

(Café Seating Area) IP44 Pendant LED lights.

(Kitchen/Storage) IP54 Surface Mounted LED’S.
(B): Positions of Socket-Outlets and FCUs

Placement Criteria:

• Each room to include:

 4 sockets per room double/single for general use (phone charging,
TV,Kettle).
 2 fused connection unit (FCU) for a 700 W air handling unit &
bathroom towel rail.

C) Placement of Luminaires

Positions of luminaires will be shown on drawings, each type identified clearly

in the area they will be placed:

• Recessed LED Downlights.

• Pendant LED Lights.
• Surface-mounted LEDs.

D) Circuit Arrangements in Hotel Extension

Each room will be on an independent radial circuit to prevent faults in one

room from affecting others. Distribution boards will group circuits by proximity
(e.g., lighting, sockets).

E) Additional Distribution Boards

The hotel extension will require additional distribution boards to

accommodate localized circuits, each protected by RCBOs for combined
overcurrent and earth fault protection.

F) Lighting Circuit in Pool/Café Block

• Arrangement: Pool lighting circuits grouped by areas (e.g., main pool,

changing rooms).
• Switching: Local switches for each area.
G) Circuit Identification

Each circuit will have a unique identifier, such as:

• Room 1-L: Lighting for Room 1.

• Room 1-S: Sockets for Room 1.

H) Legend for Symbols

• Recessed LED Downlight.

• Pendant LED Light.
• Surface-mounted LED.
• FCU: Fused Connection Unit.

Question 3:
Selection of Circuit Protective Devices:
Based on the design specifications and the final circuits provided, the following circuit
protective devices are selected:

Key Considerations:

• Breaking Capacity: All devices must have a breaking capacity of at least 3.7 kA to handle the
prospective short-circuit current.
• RCD Protection: All socket circuits and circuits in special locations (e.g., bathrooms, pool area)
require 30 mA RCD protection.
• Type of MCB/RCBO: Type B for general circuits, Type D for circuits with high inrush currents
(e.g., motors, pumps).

This selection ensures compliance with BS 7671 and the design specifications provided in the assignment.

• Voltage drop is within limits (3% for lighting, 5% for power).

• Cable sizes, grouping, and temperature adjustments are correctly applied.
• Earth fault loop impedance (Zs) is within permissible limits for each circuit.

Question 5: Determine the minimum possible cross-sectional area of the CPC for
one of the circuits supplying the fridges, satisfying the requirements for
disconnection as ADS under earth fault conditions and the adiabatic equation as
per Regulation 543.1.3 in BS 7671.

Circuit Details

• Design Current (Ib): 16A (2 × 8A per fridge)

• Protective Device: 16A Type B MCB
• Cable Type: 70°C thermoplastic single-core non-sheathed cables in PVC surface
conduit
• Circuit Length: 15m
• Earth Fault Loop Impedance (Zs): 0.12 Ω (from previous calculations)
• Prospective Fault Current (PFC): 3.7 kA (from design specifications)
Step 1: Verify Disconnection as ADS
The circuit must disconnect within the maximum permissible disconnection time (0.4s
for circuits ≤ 32A) under earth fault conditions. This is satisfied if:

Where:

• U0 = Nominal voltage to earth (230V for single-phase circuits)

• Ia = Current causing automatic operation of the protective device (16A Type B
MCB)

For a 16A Type B MCB, the maximum Zs is 2.87 Ω (from Table 41.3, BS 7671). Since the
calculated Zs=0.12 ΩZs =0.12Ω, the circuit satisfies the disconnection requirement.

Step 2: Adiabatic Equation (Regulation 543.1.3)

The adiabatic equation ensures that the CPC can withstand the fault current without
excessive temperature rise. The minimum CSA of the CPC is given by:

Where:

• S = Minimum CSA of the CPC (mm²)

• I = Fault current (A)
• t = Disconnection time (s)
• k = Factor depending on the material of the conductor and insulation (from Table
54.3, BS 7671)
Step 3: Verify CPC Size with Table 54.7
Table 54.7 in BS 7671 provides the minimum CSA of the CPC based on the live
conductor size. For a 2.5 mm² live conductor, the minimum CPC size is 1.5 mm².
However, the adiabatic calculation requires a larger CPC size (6 mm²), so i must use 6
mm² to satisfy both requirements.

Final Answer
The minimum possible cross-sectional area (CSA) of the CPC for the fridge circuit is
6 mm². This satisfies both:

1. Disconnection as ADS under earth fault conditions.

2. Adiabatic equation as per Regulation 543.1.3 in BS 7671.

The maximum demand before diversity is calculated by summing up the full load of all

Part 2: Maximum Demand After Diversity

The maximum demand after diversity is calculated by applying the appropriate
diversity factors (expressed as percentages) to each circuit. Diversity factors account for
the fact that not all loads will be operating at their maximum capacity simultaneously.

Summary

• Maximum Demand Before Diversity: 292A - Maximum Demand After Diversity: 240.6A

7. Electric Shock Protection for Shaver Points

Explanation:

How Electric Shock Protection for Shaver Points Works

1. Electrical Separation:
a. Shaver points typically use a double-wound isolating transformer.
b. This means the input supply (230V) and the output supply (e.g., 115V or 230V) are not
directly connected.
c. The transformer separates the user from the mains supply, so there's no direct path for
electric current to flow through a person to the earth.
2. Low Power:
a. Shaver sockets are designed for low-power devices only (like shavers or electric
toothbrushes).
b. Lower power reduces the risk of dangerous currents.
3. Built-in Protection:
a. The transformer inside the shaver point includes thermal protection or a fuse.
b. If the transformer overheats or develops a fault, the power supply is automatically
disconnected.
4. Double Insulation:
a. Shaver points are often double insulated, meaning no exposed conductive parts can
come into contact with live parts.
b. This adds another layer of protection against electric shock.
5. No Earth Connection Needed:
a. The output from the transformer is isolated, from earth connection.
b. Even if you accidentally touch one of the live terminals, there's no complete circuit for
current to flow through your body to earth.

switch must be capable of handling the inrush current, which can be up to 10
times the normal load current for a short duration. For a 6A circuit, the switch
should ideally be rated for 10 × 6A = 60A for inrush current handling.
