5 Principles in formulating
essay test items
a. Should be planned and constructed carefully in advance. Essay test items
should not be done quickly but haphazardly. The teacher needs to critically think
about what concept he wants to test whether a student knows and can do. He
must also consider that there is a specific correct answer to the question.
b. Essay questions are distributed evenly among the lessons. Essay test questions
must be valid questions as these must emanate from the lesson(s) discussed by
the teacher.
c. Identify causes of unreliability. Essay questions should be formulated in a way
that it will not be easy for students to simply lift statements from a book or any
reference as their answer.
d. Essay questions must be vividly phrased questions for the scope to be clear to
students. Essay questions should be clearly stated for students to easily
understand them. The teacher should use terms that are not complicated
because it is not a vocabulary test.
