Resources (Geography - Resources and Development)

This chapter focuses on the concept of resources, their classification, and sustainable use.

What are Resources?

Anything that is useful and satisfies human needs is called a resource. Resources have
utility, which means they serve a purpose and have value.

Types of Resources

1. Natural Resources: These are found in nature and used by humans.

o Renewable Resources: Can be replenished (e.g., sunlight, air, water, forests).

o Non-renewable Resources: Exist in limited amounts and take millions of years

to form (e.g., coal, petroleum, natural gas).

2. Human-Made Resources: Resources created by humans, such as buildings, roads,

machines, and technology.

3. Human Resources: People with knowledge, skills, and intelligence that help in
resource development. Education and health are important for improving human
resources.

Sustainable Development

The chapter emphasizes the importance of sustainable resource use, meaning resources
should be used wisely so they are available for future generations. Practices like recycling,
afforestation, and conservation help in sustainability.
