Left front of engine compartment, near battery.

Pinouts

Engine Control Module has 3 connectors.

Technicians have noted the protective shield on the connector can be removed by sliding the shield off. First the
connector must be disconnected, remove the connector latch by aligning the pivot tab with the latch hole and then
cut off the tie wrap around the connector harness. The tabs on the right hand side of the connector must be pried
with a small flat head. Once the tabs are loose the connector shield must be pulled away from the harness in order
to slide off.

ECT Sensor,Engine

Operation

This sensor is a thermistor, used to monitor engine coolant temperature. As coolant temperature rises or falls, the
Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor signal voltage will vary accordingly. The Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
signal is used by the Engine Control Module to adjust injector pulse width, and in some applications, to activate the
cooling fans if needed.

Location

Best Test Location:

Gray two pin connector at sensor.
Component Location:
Threaded into water outlet near upper radiator hose.

Tests

DC Voltage Test

Connect test leads:

Yellow=Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Signal
Black=Known good ground

Engine Coolant Temperature Voltage

14 ° F (-10 ° C) 4.4V

68 ° F (20 ° C) 3.5V

122 ° F (50 ° C) 2.2V

194 ° F (90 ° C) 0.9V

Out Of Range No Signal Test

If signal is out of range or no voltage signal appears: Connect test leads:

Yellow=Sensor Ground
Black=Known good ground
Ground voltage should be below 100mV at all times. If OK, check reference voltage.
Key off, disconnect sensor.
Connect test leads:
Yellow=Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor signal
Black=Known good ground
Key on, should be about 5.0V.

Resistance Test

Key off, disconnect Engine Coolant Temperature sensor.

Connect Red & Blue test leads across ECT sensor terminals.

Engine Coolant Temperature Resistance

14 ° F (-10 ° C) 7.0 k Ω to 11.4 k Ω

68 ° F (20 ° C) 2.4 k Ω to 2.6 k Ω

122 ° F (50 ° C) 680 Ω to 1.0 k Ω

194 ° F (90 ° C) 236 Ω to 260 Ω
