KINEMATICS OF PARTICLES AND RIGID BODIES IN PLANE
MOTION (MODULE 4) PRACTICING QUESTIONS Dr Adekunle Yekinni 1. The motion of a particle is defined by the relation x = 7.5 + 22.5t – 13.5t 2 + 1.5t3 where ‘x’ is in ‘m’ and ‘t’ is in sec. Determine (a) the position where the velocity is zero (b) position and total distance travelled when acceleration is zero. 2. The velocity of a car travelling on road is expressed as v = 3 + 4t – 0.5t 2 where ‘v’ is in m/s and ‘t’ is in sec. Calculate (a) average acceleration between (i) t = 3s and t = 5s (ii) t = 10s to t = 15s and (b) instantaneous acceleration when (i) t = 4s (ii) t = 12s. 3. The position of a particle is defined by the relationship y = 8 sin 2t + 5, where ‘y’ is in metres and ‘t’ is in seconds. Calculate position, velocity and acceleration at t = 2s and 3s. 4. The velocity of a particle is expressed as v = 4.5t 2 – 18t – 15 and x = -75 when t = 6 sec. Determine position and acceleration when t = 4sec. 5. The acceleration of a particle is expressed as a = 10 – 10t where ‘a’ is in m/s2 and ‘t’ is in sec. At t = 3s, x = 0 and v = -15 m/s. Determine the position and velocity when t = 5sec. 6. A particle moves in x-y plane with velocity V x = 12t and Vy = 8t. If it passes through the point x = 8, y = 16 at t = 2s, determine the equation of the path. 7. The motion of a particle is defined by the equation x = t 2 + 5t – 4 and y = t3 – 5t2 +4. Determine the velocity and acceleration of the particle when t = 2sec. 8. A wheel is attached to the shaft (see figure 1) of an electric motor of rated speed of 2000 rpm. When the power is switched on the unit, it attains the rated speed in 10 sec. and when the power is switched off, the unit comes to rest in 100 sec. Assume uniformly accelerated motion and determine (a) the number of revolutions the unit turns to attain the rated speed, and (b) to comes tom rest. Figure 1.
9. The sector and pinion arrangement of a temperature gauge is shown in
figure 2. The sector S has a radius 50 mm and can rotate about the hinge C. It is connected to a pinion P of radius 8 mm. A pointer is rigidly attached to the centre of the pinion. If at an instant shown, sector S has angular velocity 1 rad/sec and a constant angular acceleration 2 rad/sec 2 in the anticlockwise direction, determine the angular velocity and acceleration of the pointer.
