3. Doubly Reinforced Beam Design
3. Doubly Reinforced Beam Design
❑ Necessity
1. When the section is required in beams of restricted depth
due to head room requirements.
2. When the SRB section is not sufficient to resist the BM on
the section. Thus additional tension and compression
reinforcements are designed to withstand the flexural
stresses.
3. When the reversal of stresses occurs due to the lateral
forces.

Asc = area of compression reinforcement
d’ = effective depth of compression steel from the top fibre
fsc = stress in compression reinforcement at the level of steel (from Table)

PROBLEMS
1. Find the factored moment of resistance of a beam section 230mm * 460mm
effective depth reinforced with 2-16mm diameter bars as compression
reinforcement at a cover of 40 mm and 4-20 mm diameter bars as tension
reinforcement. The materials are M20 grade concrete and mild steel
reinforcement .
Sol. b = 230 mm Asc = 2*201 = 402 mm2
d = 460 mm Ast = 4*314 = 1256 mm2
d’ = 40 mm
Equating total forces
0.36 * fck * b * xu + Asc*fsc = 0.87*fy*Ast
d’/d = 40/460
= 0.090, next higher value 0.1 may be adopted
Fsc = 217 N/mm2
Substituting
0.36*20*230*Xu + 402*217 = 0.87*250*1256
Which gives 1656 Xu = 273180-87234
= 185946
Xu = 112.29mm
Xu,max = 0.53d = 0.53*460 = 243.8mm
Xu < Xu,max
Hence, section is under reinforced.
Taking moments of compressive forces about centroid of tensile reinforcement
Mu = 0.36 fck*b*Xu*(d-0.42Xu) + Asc*fsc*(d-d’)
= 0.36*20*230*112.29*(460-0.42*112.29)*10-6 + 402*217*(460-40)*10-6
= 113.4 kNm
2. Find out the moment of resistance of a previous example , if the materials are
M20 grade concrete and HYSD reinforcement of grade Fe 415.
Sol. b = 230 mm Asc = 2*201 = 402 mm2
d = 460mm Ast = 4*314 = 1256 mm2
d’ = 40m
Equating total forces, total compression C = total tension T
0.36 * fck * b * xu + Asc*fsc = 0.87*fy*Ast
For d’/d = 0.1, fsc = 353 N/mm2
Substituting,
0.36*20*230*Xu + 402*353 = 0.87*415*1256
1656Xu + 141906 = 453479
Which gives Xu = 188.15 mm
Xu,max = 0.48*460=220.8 mm
Xu < Xu,max
Hence, Section is under-reinforced.
The moment of resistance can be found out by taking forces about
centroid of tensile reinforcement.
Mu = 0.36 fck*b*Xu*(d-0.42Xu) + Asc*fsc*(d-d’)
= [1656 Xu(460-0.42Xu) + 141906(460-40)]*10-6
Substituting Xu = 188.15 mm
Mu = 118.7 + 59.60 = 178.3 kNm

For the designed section, determine xu by equating total compression and
total tension,
0.36fckbxu + Ascfsc = 0.87fy Ast
0.36 x 20 x 230 xu + 628 x 353 = 0.87 x 415 x 1570
xu = 208.43 mm
Xu,max = 0.48 d
= 0.48 x 500 = 240 mm
Xu < Xu,max
The beam is under-reinforced. The design is accepted.
