GHOST TOWNS

A German colonial town in the Namib Desert, Kolmanskop

became prosperous in the early 20th century because there was
an active diamond mining* industry. However, heavy mining and
the discovery of diamonds in another part of Namibia made that
people abandoned the town by the middle of the century. Now,
thousands of tourists visit the ruins covered with sand every year.

The island of Hashima, in Japan was in the early 20th century the
place where many Koreans worked when Japan controlled the
Korean peninsula. They abandoned the island in the 1970s when
the coal mine closed. People can now take a boat from the city of
Nagasaki to visit the island.

In the 19th century about 1,000 people lived in this Montana town,
looking for gold but when there wasn't any more mineral people
left Garnet.Today, the authorities preserve the place to show what
life was like during the best time of the town.

When a nuclear power station exploded it affected the city of

Pripyat, in Ucraine. The area is still unsafe for residency, but lots
of tourists visit it, especially with the popularity of the miniseries
Chernobyl.

People started living in the city of Craco, situated in the south of

Italy, in the 8th century, but they abandoned it in the middle of the
20th century. The city is on a hillside so the landslides** made the
buildings too dangerous to live in. The area still has religious
festivals each year and tourists can visit it as part of a guided tour.

During the Spanish Civil War, 1936 - 1939, the town of Belchite
was destroyed. However, it now exists in two parts. There's the old
town, full of ruins from that period and open to visitors in guided
tours, and the new town situated nearby. The town was first
occupied by Republican forces during the war, but finally the town

fell to Franco's dictatorship***. Franco decided to leave the old town in that way to remember
the war and ordered to build a new town next to it.
