What is Communication?
• Communication is a process by which
information is exchanged between
individuals through a common system
of symbols, signs, or behavior.
What is Communication?
• Communication can transpire in a
variety of contexts and situations such
as face to face interaction, forum or
meeting, online and phone
conversation, group discussion,
interview, class recitation, sending
letter correspondence, and many other
forms.
Nature of Communication
1. Communication is a process.
2. Communication occurs between two
or more people (the speaker/s and the
receiver/s).
3. Communication can be expressed
through written or spoken words,
actions (nonverbal), or both spoken
words and nonverbal actions at the
same time.
Verbal Communication
Refers to an interaction in which words
are used to relay a message. It can be
through written (writing) or spoken
(speaking) words.
Nonverbal Communication
Refers to an interaction where behavior
is used to convey and represent
meanings. All kinds of human responses
that are not expressed in words are
classified as nonverbal communication.

Barriers of Communication
1. Noisy environment
2. Use of jargon or word belonging to
specific field or discipline
3. Emotional barriers or emotions being
felt when communicating
4. Lack of attention, interest, or
distractions
5. Physiological barriers such as
hearing problems or speech
difficulties

6. Physical barriers such as geographic
distance between the sender and receiver
7. Differences in perception, ideas, or
viewpoints
8. Language differences which include
familiarity with the language and accents
9. Cultural differences like for example the
concept of personal space among cultures
and the use of nonverbal cues
10. Expectations and prejudices which often
result to stereotyping
