NESCOM Test for AM (Electrical)

For those who are preparing for induction786.com, the paper consists of 40 questions. One question
carries 5 marks and for wrong option 1 mark is deducted, i.e, negative marking is applicable.

Paper was from pure power engineering. Prepare transformers, motors especially induction motors,
breakers, a little bit from batteries and from instrumentation.

Test's Questions (rough idea)

1. Technique used to improve steady state stability?

I don't remember options but one of them was single pole switching.

2. Purpose of oil used in oil CBs?

3. What operation is performed in 2nd quadrant of the 4-quadrant DC motor control system.

Ans: Forward braking.

4. If flux density is increased then what happens to a transformer?

Ans: Its size is reduced.

5. Two impedances are connected in parallel what will be the equivalent impedance?

The values of those impedances in parallel were given in complex form. It was kind of 1+j and 1-j values.

6. What does not change in transformer?

Ans: Frequency
7. Watt-hour meters and Amp-hour meters are which type of instruments?

Ans: Integrating

8. Modern sub-station material is?

Ans: I think Al Alloy.

9. If induction motor's reactance increases then?

Ans: I think T increases.

10. In transformers, more turns are on which side?

Ans: High voltage side

11. Cyclo-converter is used for?

12. Which Torques are present in analogue instruments?

Ans: Deflecting T, Damping T, All of these.

SUPARCO Test for AM (Electrical Power Engineering)

1. Voltage controlled device: JFET

2. Tunnel diode has a special characteristics: negative resistance

3. Negative Voltage regulation of transformer on: leading power factor

4. Transformer transforms: power (according to Theraja)

5. Steady state error in a closed loop system:

6. Total power transmitted by AM is 2.6 kW and modulation index is 0.8 then carrier power is:

Solution:

Pt = Pc (1 + m²/2)

Pt = 2.6 kW

m = 0.8

So,

2.6 = Pc (1 + 0.8²/2)

2.6 = Pc (1.32)

Pc = 2.6/1.32

Pc = 1.96 kW

7. When modulation index increases from 0 to 1 power transmitted increases by: 50%.

8. Which of following is digital modulation: PCM

9. The best suited motor to drive 3/4 HP air compressor would be: single phase series motor

10. With the presence of earth wire in case of overhead lines: Only Capacitance of the line increases.

11. Sheath in underground cables is provided: to protect the insulation from moisture.

12. The motor used in vacuum cleaner is: Universal motor

13. On a given generated emf, the speed of generator is maximum then number of poles: 2 [N = 120 x
f/P]

14. When the frequency increases the inductive reactance: increases [Xl = 2πfL]

15. Standby losses are zero in: Hydro-power plant

[Standby losses in a power plant are defined as the fuel wasted when no generation is happening. There
are no standby losses in hydro-power plant.]

16. When the load factor increases the kWh generated: increases

17. When load factor equals to the plant factor then:

18. Half adder consists of how many gates: 2

19. A source follower is: common drain amplifier.

20. Reactors are used in power systems: To increase impedance of the system thereby limiting current.

21. Hysteresis losses of transformer are determined: By performing no-load test by connecting
Transformers' terminals to the output terminals of the alternator, which is driven by dc motor.

22. Damping ratio of critically damped system: ζ=1 (unity)

23. The stator field and rotor field rotate at same speed is called: Ns (synchronous speed)

24. Static RAM or SRAM contains flip flop to store the information.

Errors and omissions excepted.
